Just guessing on this. But I gather they saw Kinlaw as a dude they can get the best out of. Tapp had him in SF. He had around a 70 PFF pass rushing grade the last 2 seasons, and playing part time had 4 sacksin 2023 and then 5 sacks in 2024.

The Jets made him put on 20 plus pounds and supposedly he wasn't as quick. But lol, reading some of the comments on twitter about him, and the NY media, you'd think they signed the most helpless player in the NFL.

They probably overpaid. If so my guess is they saw all the crazy deals that were happening at the start of FA and felt they had to pay whatever they felt they needed to ensure they get him. Looks like they are being patient otherwise. But clearly this is a dude they targeted as someone they thought they can bring the best out of. Will see.

But I think the national media, NY media is a bit overreacting to I gather the dissappointment that he hasn't lived to his first round billing from years back. But since when is a 5 sack DT in a part time, some kind of joke? That's more sacks than what Payne has in the typical season and Payne isn't playing part time.

Oh you hit the NY media point head on. They have not written any positives on the signing.

I heard from a few of my Jet friends yesterday. They all had kind of a WTF reaction, actually like many of us on the board haha. THey thought we were nuts because Kinlaw didn't live up to their expectations.

I can't wait until halfway through the season and the media is saying how Kinlaw is playing rejuvenated!

I think this take is spot on.... the national media reaction is relatively useless. I'm assuming they paid what they had to based on the market. Whether or not it was a good deal will be determined by how effectively our front office and coaching staff were able to project him into his planned role on the defense. Last year folks made fun of us for signing Zack Ertz... even for a relatively meager amount... we look smart, they look dumb.

No doubt our FO will miss at times, but it all comes down to hit rate, and so far, that is looking really good.

Tunsil led OL or the league in penalties last year. We will blame that on the dysfunction of the Texans OL. But, its worth a mention in case anyone is wondering how we landed him.

About Coleman's poor PFF rankings at LT, can anyone remember even one time JD5 got his blindside clock cleaned because Coleman fucked up?

While I can’t think of any off hand, I can recall several where Coleman was left practically standing still while his man was in route to the QB. 5 has a tendency to feel it and make guys miss or take off though.

Given the relative ineptitude of that organization, it's kind of a compliment.... I mean honestly, if the Jets front office thought something was a good idea, wouldn't you immediately question your decision making?

PFF does factor penatlies in their grade. They still graded Tunsill as an elite LT. Again those false starts were an outlier season, not the defining aspect to his career.

Coleman with 9 penalties even though he didn't play the same amount of snaps as Tunsil. Coleman giving up a sack in every game as to the last 5 of the season. I defended the pick when they took Coleman. I liked him though better as a guard -- he seems to work better in tight spaces than he did wide. He played both in college.

Coleman was almost dead last worst in sacks given up in the league. And this is with him being rotated for the first third of the season. If he played the whole season, he probably would have given the most sacks in the league. And this is with a scheme that favors the tackles. Kliff chips more than most to help the edges. Jayden has a quick release, gets rid of the ball fast and is elusive. Then you got the RPOs-RO that tends to freeze defenders and buys extra time.

Imagine swapping Coleman who was up and down regardless of all the things that worked in his favor and likely would have led the league is sacks given up if he played the full season -- for not just a great pass protector but an elite pass protector? Wow.

I forgot what analyist talked about this, but one was going on how the Washington offense was rushed at times in part because of the O line and if this is changed to where Jayden can sit in the pocket a bit longer -- this offense will likely be even stronger.

And look I still like Coleman, but I don't think his best spot is LT. And clearly the team that scouted him and drafted him and worked with him all season didn't think that was his best spot either. I think Coleman is going to excel in his next role.

The Tackles had a TON of help from misdirection and skill players chipping in this scheme, having a stud LT opens up so many schematic options we didn’t have last year. Even more so if the downstream effect is that shuffling Coleman to RT improves that position as well.

Tunsil got a ton of false starts, not holding penalties. I argued yesterday that the false starts are much easier to overcome, even if the trend continues, especially as we’re a 4-down offense.

2 of the 5 are nickel corners and Douglas is a zone corner. There are other guys out there like Yiadom

Justin Reid perhaps.

Although hard to tell now how much they are willing to spend on any one player.

Justin Reid is really good especially against the run. Listening to Keim, I got the vibe they definitely will be active but are waiting for things to settle some. i don't know if that's today but will see.

Not to open a can of worms here, but on a blown assignment and a defender coming free after the QB, I question how PPF knows who screwed up. What if the centers call out was wrong? Let's say Coleman was supposed to have inside help and leveraged outside, but the guard f'd up, Coleman takes that on the Chinn. Coleman passed my ok primitive eye test and wasn't completely covered up by Daniels magic IMO. I assume strength of opponent is factored in including how many times the rookie LT was deliberately targeted by DC for stunts confusion etc. but with one of the hardest jobs on the planet, scoring here needs to be air tight. PFF needs to know play calls.

That all said, I appreciate PFF puts data points out and accepts feedback and changes grade when mistakes get pointed out to them.

I am glad the team did not bring Dyami Brown back. We waited 3 plus years for this guy to do ANYTHING to justify his existence and if a team with questionable management like Jacksonville wants to give him $12M based on 5 or 6 games that's up to them.

You know who knows the playcalls and where to place blame? Our FO and coaching staff

They just told you they don’t see Coleman as a franchise LT, but likely as a solid OL elsewhere. Which is a great outcome for a 3rd round pick.

I think we can trust them on that, and don’t have to rely on PFF or our own primitive eye test

I think you’re not quite grasping how big a step up Tunsil is in pass protection and all the downstream schematic benefits of that. It’s not even a criticism of Coleman to make this trade in reality, it’s nearly impossible to get elite LT play in the 3rd round. He can still be a great player on our OL.
