The 2025 Free Agency Thread

welp no Holland. Our defense not getting much help in FA this year - so far.

Happy for John as he got paid... I kind of think his reputation is what did it. Even fans around the league still think he is a top player in the NFL. The hype surrounding him and Payne probably always outperformed the play. Not saying they didn't dominate at times, Ive just always heard how unstoppable they were but didn't see it on the field as much.. I guess we will see how Allen does in Minny.

Tunsil led OL or the league in penalties last year. We will blame that on the dysfunction of the Texans OL. But, its worth a mention in case anyone is wondering how we landed him.

About Coleman's poor PFF rankings at LT, can anyone remember even one time JD5 got his blindside clock cleaned because Coleman fucked up?
I can recall a whole lot of times where JDs athletics made plays after our OL failed him, especially from the OT spots when Biadasz was out.

Damnit, a possible AP target and he went to the bad guys
Trevon Moerhig is still out there and might be an option. We should also be reminded that Derrick Forrest was putting together a really solid campaign when Ron was still here before his injury happened. Maybe they see a future for the guy. Who knows.

Digesting some of the narrative from the Texan media perspective about Tunsil. They all think Tunsil is a stud. The penalities were about false starts which they think can be cleaned up. His penalty issue wasn't that flagrant in previous seasons which ironically is similar numbers to what Coleman had last year albiet Coleman didn't play the full season.

Amazing pass protector. Work in progress who has improved in the run game but good enough. Decent person but not a leader type.

they got to pay a lot of guys coming up, need the cap room, need the picks. Worried about Tunsil's next payday.

Moehrig went to the Panthers sadly

I don’t think we are looking to spend huge money at safety.

I’m not sure how much cap we have left, but I’m sure we could clear a bunch by extending Terry and restructuring some guys.

I’m still nervous about edge and CB. I’m sure there is a plan there, but I wish I knew what it is. I don’t know why they don’t tell me these things!

In general its pretty wild how divergent media talking heads are about FA.

lol, some of the same dudes who were down on their previous off season like Jon Ledyard, and JLC are down on it again. Not that it matters. Ledyard who I like his draft takes is especially dissappointing -- I recall him lauding the Deebo deal when it was done. Now he's trashing it as part of his aggregate take that Peters is screwing up.

You got the PFF guys making fun of the Dan Moore deal and lauding Washington for the Tunsil deal. Then you got ESPN giving Washington a B minus for the Tunsil deal and the Titans an A for the Dan Moore 20 plus million deal -- Moore the same dude who gave up the most sacks in the league last year. :)

Overall though the media takes seem to be we made the best and worst deal yesterday -- Tunsil the best, Kinlaw the worst. Again, it doesn't matter of course though.

For me this isn't trust the process after Ron is crowing after a 7-9 playoff season. This FO has already accomplished something none other had in eons. Took the team to the championship game. Found a franchise QB. I am trusting Peters.

I doubt his penalty issues played a significant role in them letting Tunsil go - that was 100% a salary cap move. Theres no other explanation to justify letting a player of his caliber go.

I was listening to Keim this morning on the Junkies.

A. This team wasn't a fan of the deals made yesterday around the league. They plan to be active in stage B of FA where they expect better value

B. Keim doesn't know but is guessing Coleman more likely to go RT than guard

C. Speculated that they have plans for Kinlaw that might be different than how other teams used him -- perhaps as a run stuffing edge.
Not liking the high contract costs yesterday only makes sense, they were bonkers!

This post and Kdawgs brings Kinlaws signing more into perspective.

I am certain they want to try Coleman at RT before moving him inside. If I recall correctly, there were a lot of doubters of him on the right side and most everyone felt G was his natural position.

Oh sure and me too. The LTs main goal in life is NEVER let the QB get head in the middle of his back with a helmet and Coleman did that. Far exceeded expectations and I personally think his PFF grade is bullshit. How many penalties did he take - do they factor that in, or not. Nothing against our lord and savoir, but all mobile QBs make plays when the OL fails them. Even the immobile ones do.

It's wild that for decades we saw QBs league wide with no pocket awareness getting clobbered over and over. And with that, the modern day mobile QB became the norm.

I disagree, I think they did it for the draft picks. It looks like Tunsil is costing them 15M of dead money in 2025 so its not a free ride for them.

I'd wager there were discussions about his penalties at some point. If GMs don't look at penalties when making decisions, I would be surprised. But I am aint no GM.

Kinlaw will be an elephant edge if we use him to his strengths. Which we better plan on doing.

Well based on the games I watched last year, our teams weakest offensive links were more talent at WR and the T's. Most of the board agreed that the first two picks should be an Edge and a T. AP made a decision to spend a lot of draft capital and ca space on a LT to replace Coleman so he and the staff must have felt a need to move him as well

Just guessing on this. But I gather they saw Kinlaw as a dude they can get the best out of. Tapp had him in SF. He had around a 70 PFF pass rushing grade the last 2 seasons, and playing part time had 4 sacksin 2023 and then 5 sacks in 2024.

The Jets made him put on 20 plus pounds and supposedly he wasn't as quick. But lol, reading some of the comments on twitter about him, and the NY media, you'd think they signed the most helpless player in the NFL.

They probably overpaid. If so my guess is they saw all the crazy deals that were happening at the start of FA and felt they had to pay whatever they felt they needed to ensure they get him. Looks like they are being patient otherwise. But clearly this is a dude they targeted as someone they thought they can bring the best out of. Will see.

But I think the national media, NY media is a bit overreacting to I gather the dissappointment that he hasn't lived to his first round billing from years back. But since when is a 5 sack DT in a part time, some kind of joke? That's more sacks than what Payne has in the typical season and Payne isn't playing part time.

Lol. Yeah, I imagine giving him away wasn’t on the table. My point is only that, if you’re a Houston fan you don’t mind the picks but you are probably asking ‘WTF?!’ because who is now going to protect your young stud QBs blind side?

Houston’s front office was looking at what Tunsil’s next contract was going to cost, his age, and all of the other guys they are going to have to pay soon (including in the not too distant future CJ Stroud). They did the trade because they felt they had to and his recent issues jumping offsides wasn’t a factor.

I agree and understand Coleman was less than optimal at LT as a raw 3rd rounder and improving on that would take time. I am happy we added a stud LT but will defend Coleman who simply far exceeded expectations and helped our offense kick ass even when our OL got wrecked with injuries, he held up including physically (which counts as something).

Now he'll get moved to wherever he is needed or a best fit. I bet he stays outside. And can certainly swing if injury bites us.
