I doubt Rivera gets it. He seems to live in football delusion. Heck it was nauseating to hear Greg Olsen in a broadcoast covering this team go on and on about how Rivera set up this staff with a roster built to win. Could it get more absurd? Peters completely overhauled Ron's junk roster. But I gather Ron sold that to Olsen, the idea that he deserves credit for the team winning.

Out of Shanny, Cerrato, Bruce, Ron as to defacto GMs of this team. they were all bad. But Ron IMO was easily the worst of the lot.

Yes it is unbelievable how bad Ron was at his job but he wanted "Full control" and essentially later on complained that he had to do too much in a tough time. I agree it was a bad situation he didn't plan for, but still, he wanted the full control.

On topic- I think when you have a VERY dynamic draft and your view on FA is to "Fill the blanks" you have to be careful balancing moves pre-draft with moves post-draft.
Let's say you have holes at positions a,b,c,d. In the draft with BPA, you will not need to trade up/down too much to get BPA. That may be viewed as a strength in some ways for a draft strategy.

After the draft, you can fill holes with FA.

If you fill too many holes pre-draft, then you end up with strong needs at positions a, b. You try to fill those in the draft, you may end up reaching more. You can't always get the trades up/down you may want to get. If you have fewer strong needs, you may end up reaching more.

Anyway, just some thoughts I had about balancing pre-draft and post-draft moves with FA. It's probably a bit of a balancing act.

FA starts soon and the draft is not until the end of April. If they wait until after the draft the pickings will be slim. Looking back at a few of our signings and Luvu, Wagner, BadAss and Allegretti were all signed right away and long before the draft.

Olsen is just loyal to his former coach. I think most people who cover the league understand just how bad RR was.

I thinks others get it but you asked if Ron knew how bad he was at his job, I'd guess no.

Ron also referenced in an interview not long ago that he was rooting for Quinn because they are friendly and he referenced Quinn thanking Ron for helping set things up for him.

I am guessing Ron is determined to think that he's somehow part of this team's current success.

Unfortunatly I believe you are correct. Anyone getting to a position like that has an ego the size of Vermont.

On the last point - if you hold out the whole year that year does not count and he would still have one year left on his deal and be contracted to the Browns. There are fines in players contracts for missing mandatory offseason workouts and training camp so he would accrue fines and then obviously miss paychecks if he sits out games in the regular season.

Ironically, Chinn was one of my favs in his draft. Quan Martin made "my guys" list in his draft. So if they signed Moehrig, it would complete the trio for me as for some of the safeties I liked pre draft. Sadly, I loved McKinney, too. I saw him play live once in an Alabama game and just zeroed in on him for most of the game. Too bad we didn't sign him.

I recall me and you especially liked to talk safeties and TEs. Usually I am deep into those spots by now. But I have been going hard into RBs, D line and some O line not the other spots yet.

Yeah, I haven't been paying much attention, since we lost ES and I had a problem with my TV for a bit, so I'm vaguely starting to pay attention now. I'm pretty out of it lately.

It's busy work period for me which is about to slow down. I am fascinated by FA, more than ever because i expect we will be active and we are in a rare window/. But I'll start hitting the draft hard towards the end of next week.

The guy played hard for many years on crap teams. He came worked hard to come back from an injury everyone thought was season ending.

This is the right move for the team because of cap and diminishing production, but I wish Jon well.

It seems like almost any player that you want is available this year. Pretty wild FA and we're loaded and cash rich, too.

i,ve followed him since alabama,he is the wrong guy and always has loved himself more than his team. good riddance.
 
Curious it others see it the same, but IMO, we’re currently looking at -

Starters needed: SS, DE, TE, Corner, G, WR (I’m counting 3 corners and 3 receivers as starters). Obviously OT would be nice as well.

Depth needed: DE, DT, Corner, TE, OT, G, C, WRx2, QB

We have some depth at: S (Reaves/Owens), RB (Ekeler/Rodriguez), G (Paul), ILB (Magee), DE (JJB)

Draft could bring: 5th DE, 4th DT, 5th Corner, 4th OT, 4th OG, 3rd C… (numbers not indicative of which spot they’ll earn).

Look to next round of FA to fill in remaining gaps.

Going to be interesting to see how much we shuffle our oline - does Allegretti stay, move, or become our swing G/C? Do Wylie or Coleman move inside (also possible Coleman switches to the right). Does Paul earn a starting spot?

It really hurts that it looks like we need a TE. Thought we would be set with Sinnot, still hoping he shows up and we resign Bates.
