The 2025 Free Agency Thread

If I remember correctly, the player has to report in by a certain game or his contract year rolls over. So technically the player can't sit out a year and have his contract expire.

I keep hearing people say this.

Bram, on his podcast a day or two ago said after the team drafted Coleman, and there was chatter about whether Coleman was a guard or tackle, somebody from the team contacted him and made sure he knew they viewed him as a tackle.

Somebody else (I don't remember, maybe a PFF guy (skinsinparadise is about to have a heart attack and die that I'm quoting a PFF guy, though I don't remember which one) said that given how difficult it was to find a tackle, if you have any question whether a player is a tackle or a guard, you let them fail at tackle first before moving them to guard.

Coleman hasn't failed at tackle. Yet. They viewed him as a tackle. I think they're going to continue to groom and coach him to be a tackle. Now, could they sign somebody and flip him to the right side? Sure. But I think they're going to keep trying with Coleman as a tackle.

If they sign a LT, whoever that is, then they'll probably kick Coleman to the right side and use Wylie as the backup swing tackle, and not bring back Big Luc.

Personally, I want them to re-sign Lucas. He's a professional and is just a great depth piece. He can start 4-6 games a year and backup whoever if they go out for a bit. But I don't think they need Lucas + a new tackle + Wylie. If you want to cut Wylie for Lucas and save some money, I'm ok with that, but I doubt they would do that, I think they'd pick Wylie over Lucas.

He could sit out and get fined. He has 2 years left on his contract I think, but they can tag him after that and he can refuse to play and get fined forever.

It feels very Bruce Allen level petty though.

Do we know what the difference between the 8M guaranteed and the "up to" 9.5M piece? Just wondering if the extra 1.5M fall into the "likely to be earned" category or not?

I have not dropped my rants on Jay. But in the interest of not derailing the thread, I'll just rant in my head and not subject anybody else to it.

Yeah, Coleman is our LT until he fails at it and he hasn't at all. He missed camp last year and was up and down and had some injuries, but overall he looked pretty good. Another year in a pro conditioning program and he should only get better.

Allegretti wasn't awesome, but decent for sure. Wylie can swing in to cover Cosmi until he's back and we can replace RT with a FA and walk Lucas back again and draft a developmental player, too.

Haslem is in the running for worst owner now that Snyder is gone, so it wouldn't be THAT surprising for the browns to be petty.

The one thing is he HAS to report by week something or the year voids and rolls over to the next year. So, he will show up and pass a physical.

Now, I think that's all he has to do. If they ask him to play and he doesn't, well, that's not a great look, but I don't think there's much they can do it about it. They can fine him, but I don't think they can fine him the entirety of his game check. So they'll have him on the roster, paying him, and he won't be playing. That's not really good for anybody.

The issue for the Browns is trading him is challenging on their cap. I know he probably doesn't care much about that, given they kindof did that to themselves with the ridiculously fully guaranteed contract to Watson, but it still is hard to move him from a cap perspective.

I think they LOVE Allegretti's leadership on the line, and when Biadacz (sp?) went out, he started making line calls. He's a true professional and a veteran leader. He does NOT have to be a starter, though.

In an ideal world, they could draft a guy who could, replace Allegretti, and then Allegretti flips to fill in for Cosmi for half the season then slides into a backup guard role. They absolutely NEED to bring in somebody so they can fill the Cosmi spot for half a season. Whether that's a RT so Wylie can do it, or another guard so Allegretti can do it, or jus somebody who can start, I don't know.

But that's a definite need. If we draw the Eagles early and Cosmi is out, and we have to have some rando trying to block Carter, that guy can blow up an entire game by himself.

Yeah Darrisaw was who I wanted, followed by JOK in that draft. McQueen loved to say that I wanted Jamin so criticizing Rivera was off limits for me when he was defending him in his last year and I kept blasting Rivera. But lol, as I would tell him I didn't even have Jamin rated in the first round let alone him being who I wanted in the first. I put him as a 2nd rounder. I thought he had potential, I was wrong about that, but he wasn't my guy in the first. Moehrig was the next guy, the third guy for me at that pick.

Ironically, Chinn was one of my favs in his draft. Quan Martin made "my guys" list in his draft. So if they signed Moehrig, it would complete the trio for me as for some of the safeties I liked pre draft. Sadly, I loved McKinney, too. I saw him play live once in an Alabama game and just zeroed in on him for most of the game. Too bad we didn't sign him.

I recall me and you especially liked to talk safeties and TEs. Usually I am deep into those spots by now. But I have been going hard into RBs, D line and some O line not the other spots yet.
 
I too wanted Darisaw and really saw that as a no-brainer pick, I clearly remember a lot of chatter about JOC. I posted that I wanted them to draft Kyle Hamilton and was not happy that they traded back and took Johan Dotson. Forbes over Gonzalez was universally criticized the next day. Posters pointed out that on Forbes' highlights where he was making interceptions that he was beaten on the play but the ball was underthrown or tipped or whatever. Learning that there was a screaming match in the draft room about Forbes over Gonzalez confirms that we have only one man to blame.

It remains staggering that message board posters knew more about drafting players than Ron Fucking Rivera. I acually wonder if he is aware of how bad he was or like Snyder is he still in denial?

He appears to still be in denial, but his apparent hire as Cal's - well, what has been described as "GM" - means others are fueling the denial too.

Yes it is unbelievable how bad Ron was at his job but he wanted "Full control" and essentially later on complained that he had to do too much in a tough time. I agree it was a bad situation he didn't plan for, but still, he wanted the full control.

On topic- I think when you have a VERY dynamic draft and your view on FA is to "Fill the blanks" you have to be careful balancing moves pre-draft with moves post-draft.
Let's say you have holes at positions a,b,c,d. In the draft with BPA, you will not need to trade up/down too much to get BPA. That may be viewed as a strength in some ways for a draft strategy.

After the draft, you can fill holes with FA.

If you fill too many holes pre-draft, then you end up with strong needs at positions a, b. You try to fill those in the draft, you may end up reaching more. You can't always get the trades up/down you may want to get. If you have fewer strong needs, you may end up reaching more.

Anyway, just some thoughts I had about balancing pre-draft and post-draft moves with FA. It's probably a bit of a balancing act.

He would need to report by midseason for the year to count vs his contract. Think Trent in 2019

It’s a balancing act for sure.

The good news for us is that a bunch of our needs are at positions that rotate heavily (DE/DT especially, RB and WR to some extent) or that we need quality depth/competition - corner and OL, perhaps TE (depending on if we return Ertz and Bates). I suppose the aforementioned positions fit here as well.

I was just wondering about the idea of a pick swap instead… I know I’d feel a lot better about making that trade.
 
Go get Jonathan Allen, Cards!. I am pessimistic about them getting draft capital for him because the locals seem pessmistic. But heck you never know?
