Let's Make a Deal: The Trade Thread

Thinking about the trade compensation this morning and it hit me. Given where we're picking our fifth rounder is practically a sixth rounder. I'm still worried about availability, but it's a fair bet that Deebo will outplay that. Hopefully though, he's not a one year rental and bust. A big reason we're excited about Peters is his potential to do magic in the draft and find talent in every round.

I agree w/Deebo.. to injury prone and really I’ve never completely understood the hype on him… if Deebo wasn’t a 9er he be mediocre at best.. Kupp I think most needs a new scenery. Kupp on those short post up routes and quick hitters w/Daniels could easily resemble his old self imho. Under Kingsbury Cooper Kupp would be revitalized imho
How could you not understand the hype on Deebo Samuel? He has been one of the most explosive players in the league, probably been the best RAC receiver in the NFL and will be a great fit here too. He may not be the same player he was a few years ago however he has missed only 2 games in each of the last 2 seasons and just turned 29. If there was every a player in who is poised to have a big year with a change of scenery he would be a great candidate as he is in a contract year.

Dyami Brown for Deebo Samuel? Sign me up for that every time.

I was hoping they would find a way to get DK Metcalf somehow.

I hope it isn't a case of Peters getting a guy he knows, but the short list of "guys people know" looks like this:
Ertz (Kingsbury)
Dorance Armstrong (DQ/Whitt)
Fowler (DQ/Whitt)

I know I am missing some others, but basically it worked out well. I have to be in trust mode. I think the whole philosophy is "BPA" - so you look at who you could get in the 5th, you look at the Deebo potential and especially fit, you look at him being actually available for this value vs "potential" for a Metcalf or other FAs... I can see a good argument for how you make this move. It all depends on the read on Deebo being accurate, which I guess AP is confident in.
I am not that big on Metcalf. However your point of player knowledge is a little scary. We just went through the Washington Panthers era(debacle). It made sense and did work out in the first year, but would rather not see a bunch of Cowboys and Cardinals coming to Washington this year.

I really hate this deal. I think Deebo is one of the most overrated players in football. He’s a guy who had one outstanding season and has on average been a JAG since.

Even if he performs, he’s a guy you have to scheme for as he is not good at getting open vs man coverage. There were a bunch of guys I would have rather signed for less in FA

I guess we will see!

That said, I think there are going to be some eye popping deals for FA WRs that surprise us. The cap has jumped massively in the last couple years. 17.5M is not gonna look like a high end WR deal next year.

He’s due $17.5M. Cap hit is a bit less I think. He’s a free agent after next season, I don’t think I’d extend him. Have him play out and then we will see.

I think they could restructure his contract to pay a large chunk of that as a bonus and add a void year to the contract. Split the cap hit between this year and then a dead amount next year.

Probably just wait and see what happens with other FAs to see if something like that makes sense.

Voice_of_Reason started this thread to talk about potential trades the team might make. If we want to talk Deebo Samuel let's do that in the designated thread for that here...

Sounds good. I had proposed a thread title change (as a temporary thing IMO is perfect) so folks visiting yesterday saw the big news before a dedicated thread takes over.

Yesterday was just an unusual day with most staff tied up with real life. Just a reminder, I know some of our newer members are a bit gun shy about starting threads, but when it comes to breaking news, whoever can get to post it first, absolutely do so. We always want a dedicated thread in the Sons of Washington forum for big Washington news. Usually staff is all over it, yesterday was just one of those times none of us were around.

I admit I am gun shy to create threads as in the past at ES they'd get largely ignored or figure someone is likely creating one as I am and end up with dual discussions so.... try to pump the brakes and wait to see if one gets created without my doing.

I do come here for news (like many others I assume) so appreciate you reminding us noobs to get on board and report breaking news via new threads.

A Detroit Fan who has given the team a lot of love this year-rumored- would love this to happen-

I totally get the argument for a player like Myles Garrett, but 2 first rounders is a hell of a lot to pay for a guy who is about to be 30 years old. And it's the kind of move that sort of flies in the face of what Adam Peters 'believes in'. Doesn't mean it won't happen though. And you'd think that if this kind of deal were going to happen, that you might hear Jon Allen's name associated with it?

Agreed, I'd be leery of giving up multiple number 1's. The magic of having a star GM is that he can do great things in the draft. Now, I might be okay with giving up a first and a third or a first and a third and a Jon Allen (though I'd feel bad about doing that to Allen)

In the general, yes, but for me Garrett is an exception. He’s the kind of player that makes everybody else better. I would give the two number ones if he becomes available. You can just as easily say the magic of having a star GM is you can seize an opportunity like this, and he’ll still manage to find talent with less draft picks. After Lattimore and Deebo, I don’t know why people are still saying that trading picks for players is not his style. He’s clearly plenty willing to do it when he thinks it makes sense.

Good post HTTR - you make some excellent points. I think anytime you are considering (IF in fact, he is considering it - which is a big 'if') giving up multiple 1st rounders for a player, you have to give pause. It's a big risk no matter who you are trading for. You are 100% correct that a guy like Garrett immediately gives you something you desperately need and don't have, and that is a guy that can wreak absolute havoc in your opponent's backfield - and that can change your entire defense. I think the question has to be, how many more seasons can he do it - and can you justify giving up top assets based on that answer.

As to why people are still saying that trading picks for players is not his style, is because Peters himself has stated that the way you build a team is primarily through the draft. You're right though that there is a difference between having that as a core concept and eschewing free agency and moves that could make your team instantly better through free agency.

I don't know if the Myles Garrett stuff is conjecture, someone connecting dots based on leaks they've heard, rumor, or fact. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Thanks! I’m thinking he’s got at least two or three more years as a mega stud, and probably a couple more after that where he’s still very good. Maybe that’s a little optimistic, but guys like him often tend to defy the normal aging curve.

I know Peters says he wants to build through the draft, but that seems like a cliché we hear from just about every GM. I don’t think I’ve ever heard one come out and say we want to build through free agency and trades! And I’ll remind you of another thing he often says which is that every single day he wants to do something to make the team better. So, if he thinks a trade is going to make us better, I think he pulls the trigger. Those are his actions so far, which is more important than his words anyway.

It wasn’t our 5th. It was the NO 5th we got back in the Lattimore trade.

I don’t think it is an either/or. I know a lot of folks have been throwing Slayton around. We could just keep Dyami around as the other starting outside receiver. His deep threat ability complements Deebo’s lack of on that front

No argument on any of that, I thought about his comment about doing anything that would make the team better as well. 100% valid.

I'm hoping they move on from Dyami. I mean, Noah Brown hadn't even unpacked all of his belongings and outperformed him in what was Dyami's best season. he's just not very productive and I think if he were ever going to be, we would know it by now.

But what do I know, lol...

I agree Dyami could be that WR2 field stretcher if necessary. However, we easily can do better. Credit where credit is due, but I feel like his nice stretch at the end of the year had a lot to do with Jayden making a mediocre receiver look better than he is.

I’d love both guys back
