We have a thread on FA, we have a thread on the draft and trades seem to be lumped into either, and the conversation is split and hard to track. So I said to myself, "self, we need a Trade thread!"
Here are the trades I've heard discussed:
Incoming player:
- Myles Garrett, Defensive End, Cleveland: This is the one where people are saying we could take a big swing. It's going to take significant compensation, and there will have to be some type of an agreement first with Cleveland, because currently Cleveland is $28m over the cap, and trading Garrett would cost them $31m in dead cap space. They could essentially split that between 2025 and 2026 if they made the trade post June 1.
VOR opinion: If we can do it for the #29 pick this year and something other than a first, I think it's worth it. We have the cap space to do it, and without question, Garrett is a better player now than anybody who we could pick up at 29. That said, if you start grouping significant future picks together AND have to give him a new contract, there might be others ways to solve the problem.
- Cooper Kupp, WR, Rams: Listening to Al Galdi's podcast, he had a guy on who has a podcast for the Rams, Derek Ciapala. The short story is he likes Cupp, and thinks Kupp could be an excellent #2 WR because he just runs perfect routes, knows how to get open, and would provide a good safety valve for JD5. He actually was fairly critical of McVay as a play caller, saying McVay locked onto a guy and then started ignoring others, and so the ball didn't find Kupp this season. The downside to Kupp, however, was his health. This is going to be Kupp's age 32 season, and he's struggled to stay on the field the last 2 years.
VOR opinion: It shouldn't take much to get Kupp, and he has a roster bonus in March, so it should happen relatively quickly. He'd be an upgrade, and maybe a Zach Ertz "security blanket" replacement with more speed. But he won't extend the defense and how much can you count on him? I'd prefer to just sign him in FA than give up an asset. He's also not a burner, but he definitely would make defenses play more "honest" coverage.
- Deebo Samuel, WR, 49ers: Also on Galdi's podcast, he had a 49ers insider Grant Cohn on to talk about Deebo. Well, he basically had nothing good to say about him. He used the term "overfed" to mean "fat." Said he basically came into the season 20-30lbs heavy, can't separate against man coverage, if a very "me me me!" type of personality. Just one guy's opinion, but he had almost nothing positive to say about Deebo at all.
VOR opinion: I wouldn't give up draft capital to get Deebo. If I had to pick between Deebo ad Kupp, I'd take Kupp. If you get neither, then there are ways to solve the problem in FA and the draft. I've been out on Deebo from day one.
I'm leaving off Tee Higgins because it looks like the Bengals might sign Chase and franchise Higgins and try and run that offense back one more year before having to part ways.
Outgoing:
Jonathan Allen, DT: Not much to say here. He's either going to get traded and restructured by a new team for a day 3 pick because they want him under control and don't want to bid against other teams, or he's going to be released. My guess, he's going to be released.
I've heard people on the board mention trying to trade Lattimore. Unless it's part of a deal for Garrett, that's not going to happen.
If you've heard of other rumors that are reasonable, stick them here, and I can throw them in the OP.
(Also, this is my first new thread on BGO!)
