Yeah, I wonder if we will renegotiate to soften the cap hit. 20m is a lot.

Agreed, I wouldn't be opposed to extending to lower that number, but the how much would he want for an extension? Maybe we are able to buy low and get a deal?

It really is an interesting question. Reading social media, fans seem to be saying that Deebo lost his fire once he got the big contract. I don't know if that's sour grapes. It could be that he was playing hurt and they thought he was loafing. It could be just fans wanting to badmouth a player to justify trading him away.

So, while I think it makes sense to renegotiate and extend him for another two years, it might also benefit us to see who we are getting and how he fits before we do that.
 
What's the impact on our cap? All 21.7M?

I don’t know that I’d call a 29 yr old WR who will play his 7th season in 2025 ‘old and busted’? He is easily our 2nd best WR immediately. I don’t have a strong opinion about him. Yes a 5th is cheap, but there were some great options available in free agency, so I am surprised we decided to trade for someone. I guess until Peters makes a major mistake we have to trust him.

2) Won't mean much if they don't fix the OL and get a run game.
 
I really hate this deal. I think Deebo is one of the most overrated players in football. He’s a guy who had one outstanding season and has on average been a JAG since.

Even if he performs, he’s a guy you have to scheme for as he is not good at getting open vs man coverage. There were a bunch of guys I would have rather signed for less in FA

I was hoping they would find a way to get DK Metcalf somehow.

I hope it isn't a case of Peters getting a guy he knows, but the short list of "guys people know" looks like this:
Ertz (Kingsbury)
Dorance Armstrong (DQ/Whitt)
Fowler (DQ/Whitt)

I know I am missing some others, but basically it worked out well. I have to be in trust mode. I think the whole philosophy is "BPA" - so you look at who you could get in the 5th, you look at the Deebo potential and especially fit, you look at him being actually available for this value vs "potential" for a Metcalf or other FAs... I can see a good argument for how you make this move. It all depends on the read on Deebo being accurate, which I guess AP is confident in.
 
We're definitely not done at wideout. I'm fine with only giving up a 5th for him. But of course a 5th wouldn't be counting 17 big ones against the salary cap. Let's hope Deebo is rejuvenated

He’s 29. That’s not old even in NFL WR years.

I will say though he has miles on his treads. His physical playing style has put wear and tear on his body. He’s also a YAC guy, does his work catching balls behind the line of scrimmage or within 10-15 yards of the LOS. He’s not going to threatens a defense vertically for air yards.

I like this very much if he gets with the program and buys in. If not we can cut him and we’ve lost a 5th round pick. I also like it more if he’s the #3 and we sign or draft someone else to be the starter outside opposite Terry with Deebo as the slot or motion guy. He will also block the backside off box safeties in the run game.

If he can stay reasonably healthy and gets with the program here we just got harder to defend.

So, one thing I noticed was that our run game got hit after we lost Noah Brown. I think that was partly coincidental, but it was also that Noah was a ferocious edge blocker as a receiver. Deebo, from everything I've read, is a very physical wide receiver who's great in the run game.

So yes, we still have work to do on the run game and with the O-Line, but the Deebo pick should be a plus in the run game because having two scary wide receivers should make teams crowd the box less and because Deebo will probably block well for us.

I agree, a nice addition of a guy like Deebo is limiting how much a defense can "spy" JD. Somebodies gonna have to be responsible for what Deebs is doing around the line of scrimmage, and that takes another set of eyes off of Daniels.

If he’s healthy - if - he’s a YAC monster who beings a physicality to the WR room that impacts in the running game as well as short passing game.

Agreed MartinC - let him play out this year on a prove-it deal. Keep Allen if there's no trade market for him (but don't extend him). Can always cut him or extend if you need to find $, like say if Christian Kirk gets released and you want him in the slot etc.
 
Waking up to this news this morning…I’m pretty agnostic about it. I don’t immediately love it, I don’t immediately hate it. The deal is definitely not an over-pay but it’s success will ultimately be contingent on Samuels being in a good space both physically and emotionally. Worth the dice roll imo.
