Sorry, new transplant here so I haven’t seen that. My cursory search gave me this nugget: “Yes, NFL owners can change the name of their team, but it requires a vote from the majority of owners”

That’s a far cry from a new owner doing whatever they want.

Feel free to add if I’m missing something.

I posted it a few posts up. Ownership change is one of the reasons for bypassing the leagues 5 year rule on uniform changes. But you are correct that everything will have to be voted on and approved. Nothing in the NFL happens without league approval.

I'm not a fan of the name or the black uniforms. I also assumed whatever name was chosen would be criticized, some names more than others.

But could this be Harris just wants to stop being asked about the name? We have a ton of excitement around our team, and maybe he wants energy devoted to improvements both of and on the field (remember the recent nflpa? survey, we had a LOT of work to do). We also have a new stadium to design/build/figure out where it's going. Maybe he knows the name wouldn't be addressed for a few years anyway, and he is saying the name won't change so he doesn't have to keep answering this question until he is ready to look into a name change.

I have thought about that periodically. I loved The Squire, but his failure leave the team to John., set all of this in motion.

Would the name have eventually changed? Yes. Because what society deems acceptable changes. However, I think it had a better chance of weathering 2020 with anyone else as owner. Regardless, I think we would have ended up Warriors or similar and at least maintained a lot of our traditions, including the logo.

^^This. Between the unannounced and unacknowledged shutdown of the other place and this, it tells me a lot about what Harris and/or the team thinks of the fans, legacy fans in particular. After the incredible comeback against the Bears and the team was making its run, now finally in possession of a legit franchise QB, I had a bad feeling this might happen. As someone else said, I'm not going to let it ruin the fun of finally watching the team win, but all of this leaves a damn bitter taste in my mouth and I'm still SOOOO NOT using the stupid name. I just can't. However, now that it's permanent, I can't in good conscience continue to call them the Commodes either. So, I'll use Washington or the Burgundy and Gold.

The one concession I will make is on the logo IF Harris meets us halfway and has a decent one created. I loath the garbage taco holder W. During the rebrand, a fan created one based on the Pentagon that I liked. I hate the military pandering, but I can't lie that it was a damn cool logo and references a legit local landmark. So, if they change it to something decent, I'll buy a little merch as long as it doesn't have the "C" word anywhere. So, in terms of branding, the B & G can take a seat right next to the Withards, and just ahead of the Guardians and Pelicans. Ugh.

I said I'd never mention this because of the potential for it to be used by the name diehards, but what the hell. Mrs. Sisko and I went to NM last Xmas and we were invited to a native ceremony on Xmas day. As they opened the doors to the indoor venue, there was a guy standing next to the door with an old school R word jersey and I exchanged a few words with him about how cool it was for the team to be winning again. It was about the last thing I expected to see.

This is the primary reason I continued to support then name and to this day oppose its removal. I've yet to see real evidence that it was widely viewed as offensive. I leave open the possibility that different Native American groups have different experiences with the name and some may find it awful, but all the literature reviews and all the polls indicated otherwise.
