Josh Harris Speaks... Commanders is permanent name.

Facebook is another story. Everything to do with Commanders has been about his refusal to change the name.

I said this earlier in the thread, but again. How do we know that it is his choice alone? He may very well have been told the NFL will not allow him to change the name again. Maybe the call was not his alone to make. There are rules on branding in the NFL and it could be as simple as they won’t allow him to break them or work around them.

You could be right.

But a league that allows Al Davis & Son to move a storied franchise around like a three card monte dealer should not be dogmatic about a franchise wanting another change. Especially when said league first backed us up and then capitulated. And furthermore, the current name was conjured up by a skunk who they themselves (justifiably) ran out of town.

If, for example, Harris announced he was changing it to Redwolves, why would the NFL have an issue? the WFT>Commanders period would be seen for what it was: an anomaly. WFT is already in the rear veiw mirror.

We were screwed by a mob and a dysfunctional owner. We deserve better from the NFL.

I said it before, and I will say it again:

There was no name change that was going to appeal to everyone. Not one.

But they just had their best season in 33 years, and it happened while using the Commanders name and uniforms. They also have arguably the brightest future of anyone in the NFL at the moment. Why not try and capitalize on that?

My 13-year old son doesn't care about the Redskins. But he is ALL-IN on Jayden and the Commanders. He - and others like him - are the future of the fanbase. Unless you are 40+ years old, you never saw them hoist a Lombardi Trophy live.

I'm 55. I was convinced I'd never see another NFC Championship game, let alone a Super Bowl. Now? I don't care what they wear, or what they are called, I just want to see them win again. I want to be the Chiefs of the NFC. Yeah, I'm being greedy. But 33 years in the NFL wilderness will do that to you.

New ownership gets a window to change whatever they want.

The thing is, I picture a future when the team is playing again at RFK, just down the street from the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument. We can see them both from inside the stadium…and the team is called the Washington Commanders, the team of the Nation’s Capitol. Again, you don’t have to “like” the name to know that situation makes all the sense in the world, and it’s quite evident that is the future that Goodell and the rest of the NFL hierarchy see as well.

I’ve said this before, I would not have picked the name Commanders, but the name does make sense for the DMV…especially if/when they move back into the City proper.

Seems logical if it was rebuffed by the nfl the team would acknowledge that there was engagement in the process with the league that resulted in a no go.

As you point out it hasn't been stated explicitly, but it sure doesn't seem like that's what's happened here.

That in addition to how the team was playing had me very hopeful for the future. As of today this has destroyed my enthusiasm. I wonder how many people are like me-that the hope of a name change and on field success both contributed to excitement around the team?

Pretty much. I might not say " destroyed " my enthusiasm, but to say it put a damper on it, would be an understatement.

As I’ve said before, you are the kind of fan that I feel for the most.

I have no intention of forgetting who and what we were. In my house there is a mountain of Washington Redskins stuff to go along with some Commanders stuff. My collection of Redskins memorabilia will always be on display in my house. My basement is a celebration of all things Washington Football. My son will get it when I’m gone. I see it as a source of pride.

Embracing what exists now does not have to mean dismissing what we were. The history is the history and I will celebrate it regardless of what name we have now.

+ 1

Must be something in the water around here. When Pollen changed the Bullets to Wizards, they claimed that was the best available. Their original name was Zephyrs which is better than Wizards.

Honestly, Wizards is still horrible, easily one of the worst mascots in all of sports.

You have link/source/citation/anything for that?

Sorry but color me skeptical that the NFL is going to give anyone carte blanche to “change whatever they

The league allows for a new owner to change the name.
It's been posted here before.

For those asking, here is the section from the NFL bylaws about uniform changes. The last sentence indicates ownership change as a reason that a change is allowed within the 5 year window. However based on yesterday’s announcement, the 5 year window will probably come and go before Harris and Co make a name change. They can however still change the uniforms.

Third, be it Further Resolved, that a Club may not change its regular home and away uniforms more than once every five NFL seasons, and may not change its third uniform design more than once every five NFL seasons, absent specific extenuating circumstances (e.g., Club ownership change or relocation) as determined by the Commissioner.

I found that in this sports logo forum from 2018.

I'm glad everybody can vent and get their emotions out. I was also hoping for a name change but I've just come to accept it. There's nothing I can do about it. It is what it is

Flashbacks for all of us

Second this. Also glad the mods here didn’t immediately shut down these threads.
