What Would You Like For The New Name Of This Team?

At this point I would be ok with remaining the most dog crap name of all. I just want something close to the classic uniforms and to be able to get the logo back for one or two throwback games a season. It s outrageous that the logo cannot return once in awhile, while the Chiefs fans still do all their Native American stuff unabated and unabashedly.

I agree with many that the name change should come sooner than later. I can’t speak for everyone, but I despised the name until this season. Now it is a bit more tolerable since they turned the corner and we’re not the garbage team everyone makes fun of anymore. Fans are excited to watch again and I believe with the JD jerseys selling well, the team has reeled in many new fans.
If we can get a better name and a real logo, merchandise would fly off the shelves even more. Us fans can get new gear and be proud to wear it.
My wife bought me a gift card for the nflshop, I tried real hard to pick something but Geeze that shit is tough. Love the team but just can’t jive with the products.

I have a hard time catching on the current name. It’s just boring. And the “W”, man that’s weak.
Everything with that setup is dumb.
I’m not banging my fist for the redskins to magically come back, I just want to rid of Snyders cheap bullshit name that nobody but Ron and Dan voted for. It flat out sucks.
Wait too long and the name remains.
Get Dan Snyders doo-doo stain out for good.
Now’s the time.

I’d be good with
1. Redwolves/Wolves
2. Warthogs
3. Wolverines?

I've always been surprised 'Warthogs' didn't have more support. I know that's a favorite of SilentThreat. It's inherently fun, has a ton of potential in terms of logos/swag, is 'hog-related', alliterative, and as it's mostly been used by smaller college teams (and some minor league sports like a soccer team in Alexandria) there probably wouldn't be major trademark barriers to overcome.

Another problem with the current name, just one more of a long list of problems, is how it relates to our fight song. There is significant history with our fight song, a history that we, as fans, should be proud of.

In the 1930s and 1940s, college football was a big deal, and pro football was in its infancy. People barely paid attention. To bring attention to the Redskins, a fight song was adopted. It was composed by Barnee Breeskin, and the lyrics written by Corinne Griffith, wife of the owner. The song, played during games, brought fanfare and excitement, similar to that of college games.

It brought enough excitement that it was one of the reasons the team began selling out by the mid-1960s, even without a winning season. And it was the first pro football team to do so.

You will note that the song and the rhythm of the lyrics match perfectly. Each musical note of the song is accompanied by one syllable. Each syllable of the lyrics is accompanied by one musical note. The song dances along by itself.

However, as wonderful as this fight song was, the team did not own it. Breeskin retained the rights to the song, even as the owner's wife had written the lyrics.

As time went on, Clint Murchison Jr, in the late 1950s wanted to bring an expansion team to Dallas. But the owner of the Redskins, George Preston Marshall, was adamantly opposed to the idea, and was determined to block the idea by voting against it. Breeskin, at this time, had a falling out with the owner, and contacted Murchison, offering to sell the song to him, which he could then use as leverage to change Marshall's vote. Murchison agreed and purchased the rights.

Murchison then used the song as leverage. If Marshall didn't change his vote, Hail To The Redskins would never again be played at a Redskins game.

Marshall couldn't allow that to happen. So he reluctantly agreed to vote for the expansion in exchange for gaining the rights to the fight song.

And the Dallas Cowboys were born.

My point is, the fight song is important! It was important enough to allow the creation of what would become our biggest rival.

If the song was important enough to allow the creation of the hated Dallas Cowboys in the late 1950's, it is important enough to protect in the 2020's. Because the way it is now is a joke. It's an embarrassment. It's enough of an embarrassment that, I think, most fans at games sing the fight song the old way with the old name.

But now, with the new lyrics, which has had any semblance of the team's native American heritage removed, while at the same time carelessly tossing in "Commanders" (three syllables) in place of "Redskins" (two syllables), is nothing short of a catastrophe. It just doesn't work. It's awkward. It's stupid. It's a slap in the face. It's a violation. It's a sucker punch.

We need to fix this.

We can do that by exorcising this ridiculous current team name, and perhaps, bring back a name that, at least in some implied way, honors native Americans. Or, as a bare bones minimum, bring back something with two syllables. And then, maybe, we can bring back our wonderful icon or something similar (see avatar).

I think you are correct that the fight song really doesn't work without a Native American-themed name. It is at least workable with a 2 syllable new name. If they went with a 2 syllable non-Native name, I think eventually a reworking of the lyrics would be needed. Fans would eventually adopt the new lyrics as 'Redskins' fans died off.

It can work with any two syllable name (Redhawks, Redwolves, etc). However, I think that almost anything that hints at Native American themes will bring trouble. That battle is not over and the new fronts will be KC, Atlanta, etc.

That's been my thought process all along - that it will eventually hit those other franchises and that the Harris group would probably be averse to 'going there' again with a Native American-themed name. Only time will tell.

It's funny. I love HTTR. I hate HTTC. It goes deeper than the name. There is just something about hailing the military that rubs me wrong. We respect the military, we honor it, we serve in it... It may be as simple as homonyms. Hail sounds like Heil. And Heil to the Commanders sends a shiver down my spine.

Great comment! I agree with everything you said, until the very end. NO to Wolverines, I don’t like Michigan. 😁

And just to reiterate… The JD jerseys are selling because of the name on the back, NOT the name on the front. Every players jersey on the team will sell more with better branding.

re: The Fight Song

Who cares about the words anyway? Play the music with no lyrics, the fans will sing what they want to sing. We all have a connection with the music now, the lyrics are technically gone with the name. The song can live on forever exactly how it was composed without needing to force feed the words with it.

Thanks Mark you are a regular encyclopedia of Redskins history! (the younger crowd may need to google ‘encyclopedia’). Totally agree that the hail to the commanders song is an abomination. It’s a kick in the teeth that ruins the moment after every time we score. Yes, I am one of the fans who sings at the old way. But honestly, if we are keeping commanders, I’d rather just get rid of it.

Here's my problem with them coming out and saying, "Hey, the rebrand isn't done yet, but at some point, we'll be moving on from the Commanders name"...to me, at that point, they cease to sell any more merch. No one is going to buy Commanders stuff if they KNOW that 1-2 years from now it will be replaced.
Sure, but I think if you do plan to rebrand then being upfront about it is better than intentionally allowing your fans to spend money on gear that you KNOW will be outdated or obsolete very soon. I think the goodwill and trust that you gain by doing that is a long term win!

I think it's far more basic than that. Leaving an entire fanbase hanging out there in uncertainty for years on the name issue just flat out sucks. Make up your mind and make it known one way or the other. It's my only real beef with the Harris Ownership Group.

Okay - it's my 2nd to last beef with the Harris Ownership Group

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

So disappointing, I’m glad they didn’t leave us hanging any longer. I’ll try to embrace Commanders but it’s not gonna be easy. Hopefully we at least get some changes with the unis
