What Would You Like For The New Name Of This Team?

There is a significant % of the fanbase that thinks 'WFT' is patently stupid. Whether that was originally an 'eff you' to NFL brass or the most unimaginative alternative in renaming history, other NFL fans openly mocked it - and it deserved mocking. It appeals to some because it isn't 'Commanders'. I mean, why not rename them 'Not the Commanders'?

If you are the Harris group, and decide to rebrand, your most basic hope is that you pick a name the vast majority of fans will support and can live with. I don't think 'WFT' meets that basic requirement, but that's just my opinion. I would actually vote to stay with 'Commanders' if that was the alternative.

I agree. I get the eff you, but it also says ‘you won and we lost, you took our name and we couldn’t do anything about it’. And keep in mind that there was a chunk of our fellow fans, as much as I may disagree with them, who wanted the name gone. The only eff you I wanna send is to one Daniel M Snyder, and the best way to do that is to erase his dumb ass name and uniforms from our franchise!

I thought I was the only one who disliked the W. The one used for the WFT looked that the one from Window Nation. The current W looks like something from another league.

Since very few seem to like my idea of Redhawks with both the Lombardi R and the Gibbs scripted R, I would ask for a traditional block W.

I can speak for myself here and say while I didn’t want the name gone…I did want the controversy surrounding it gone. I spent years on and off the internet defending the name and why we should keep it Redskins. I still believe most all of the reasons for defending it were sound, but I got to the point where they fatigued me into throwing in the towel. The controversy became a huge distraction for the team and the organization. At some point the name became expendable for me.

While few of us like Commanders what I do like is not being called a racist or redneck for supporting the team all my life. I do like the players and coaches not being asked about the name immediately after a game. I like that Harris and Co. don’t have to give PowerPoint presentations to the players on how to defend the name when asked. I do like that not being the focal point of every off-season and the first thing anybody in the media talks about during training camp. I loved the name Washington Redskins since I was a kid but I have no desire to go back to that bull shit.

I hear you. Ironically, we had all the evidence, both objective and subjective, on our side. All the other side had was a histrionic soundbyte that did not stand up to scrutiny. But it became a bit of a cause celebre.

Spearfeather, thanks for the tip on the Grant and Danny Podcast. I listened to it this morning while I was running errands. They seem to think the old Redskins logo could never be used and I do not agree with that. I think for as part of a throwback uniform it would be fine.

I do agree with some previous posters that dropping Commanders is a must. It has nothing to do with the previous history of the team at all. People talk about how other names are lame like the Packers-they have a massive and storied history around their name and logo. We did too. That is why departing so completely from our history was so stupid. We gave older fans nothing to connect with left us as "identity orphans".

I don’t fully agree here I would say it’s both. We have numerous military installations in and around the DMV area. Joint Base Andrews in P.G. County and Patuxent Naval Air Station in St. Mary’s are two of the largest in the Country. Southern Maryland in particular has become a bedroom community for the Federal and Military work force.

I say that just to say that a military styled name makes as much sense to me as a Federal one.

And let us not forget the headquarters of the Department of Defense, the Pentagon, is located in the area.

I generally don’t frequent any of the name threads. But I’m sure it was mentioned somewhere Kevin Sheehan threw gas on the fire a few days ago saying something about the name changing.

Bram then did an entire segment about saying he had heard absolutely nothing about a name change as a priority right now. Then Keim came on and was doubly dismissive of the topic.

The both said they had heard tweaks to the uniform were definitely being discussed, but nothing about the name.

Could they be wrong? Sure.

But Bram is the radio voice of the team and has more access than anybody and I tend to trust Keim’s reporting more than any other best reporter.

So take that for what you will.

My vote, for what it’s worth, is the miscreants. The Washington Miscreants has a certain ring to it

Keim gets a lot of fan worship for some reason, but they don’t even give him breaking news exclusives - he isn’t privy to the Harris group’s thinking any more than you or I are. He likes to shoot down and mock fan speculation but never acknowledges when it proves to be more accurate than not.

My guess with Sheehan is Howard Gutman, who was a frequent guest (maybe still is?) on his show. Gutman is very close to Mitch Rales.

So, if that is the source, it’s legit.

We do know Sheehan has a source inside or near the ownership group. He had numbers and things during the sale which were close. And it seemed to be on the legal side and Gutman guys that bill.

Bram actually called out Sheehan for saying this 2 days in a row. Now, when Bram is on his radio show he is not wearing his “team employee” hat. But you have to think he wouldn’t have done that without checking in with his employer to ask “if I say this, am I going to look like an idiot.” And then after he did it one day, to do it the next, if he was totally off base, I’m sure somebody in the team would let him know to shut it. Maybe not confirm it, but cool it.

I like Keim. Maybe it’s because he’s been on the beat forever. He typically isn’t wrong. And local guys never get fed the breaking news. It almost always goes to the national guys.

Keim is hands down the best of the beat writers, with some really good analysis. He has reach, and both players and members of the FO talk to him. One of the great things about Keim is that he knows more than he divulges. Dude isn't in it for the "you heard it here first" rush. It's one of many reasons why players, coaches and execs trust him with info. He's E.F. Hutton for me when it comes to team news, for those who remember those commercials.

As far as the name, I hate it, but I think team leadership had far more important fires to put out and transitions to address than the name, and they've done a heckuva fantastic job all the way around on those issues. I guess the name is just a lower priority issue at the moment. I do feel, though, that the longer we go with the C word, the more likely we are to be stuck with it.

It’s not about not ‘liking’ Keim, it’s about his access to inside information. I am skeptical he has access to any info the team isn’t 100% ready to make public.

Even if the owners are ‘suggesting’ Bram deny the Sheehan ‘scoop’ - doesn’t mean it’s false. It just means they don’t want it out there presently.

I am pretty skeptical the local media guys are going to get significant inside info from this new regime unless the team wants it out there.
