Agreed. I think our undersized defensive ends were a large issue, one Quinn brought with him from stops in Dallas and Atlanta.

He likes these guys that go 255-265 and that’s too small to stand up in the run game in today’s league.

I hope Quinn and Whitt re-evaluate their scheme and what is required to stop the Barkleys and Derrick Henry’s.

Excellent idea. With depth at OL, Edge and DL, it would be a great route if just the right person does not fall to us.

We must remember the 2024 draft was one of the deepest in years. Thanks to Ron and Danny we had earned the 2nd pick in the draft and throughout the rounds. We gained additional picks by trading away a number of players. That set the team up in an incredible spot going into the draft. We will not have these advantages this year so shouldn't expect too much this year.

We were however fortunate to have hit on at least most of our picks. This is a novel thing to us and hopefully we can experience this moving forward with Peters talent eye.

If Ron could just have made those obvious first round selections over the past few years we could have in such a better place talent wise. Gonzo over Forbes, Kyle Hamilton/Olave or Davis over Dotson, Darrisay over Davis...

I have 2 thoughts:

1. You can’t stop Henry and Barkley.
2. I think containing them has less to do with their scheme and more to do with having both DTs who don’t get moved off their spot AND DE’s and OLB who can set the edge and turn outside runs back inside.

I think we just lacked talent and size, especially at DE. That has to be a priority this off season.

Assuming Allen is not back, they need to replace him also.

Too often our guys were just moved out of the hole. Scheme as fine, but if your players get pushed around, it doesn’t matter.

I also think Peters should take a personnel approach that the #1 priority is stop the run. With Philly in the division, that’s the number 1 defensive priority. If that means you give up something in pass rush due to the type of player, so be it, Quinn/Whitt have to figure out how to scheme pressure. But stop the run first.
 
We're focusing on the run D here, but let's remind everyone we picked #2 overall for a reason last year. Our roster stunk. We also struggled to rush the passer without blitzing.

A lot of Hurts throws that beat us are ones he struggles with against other opponents. His pocket was fairly clean.

I agree with others that have mentioned premier run stuffing DT's have been found all over the draft. The 1st round run stuffers tend to disappoint. If they can't rush the passer in college then they also likely lose some leverage in the NFL run game against faster and more refined OL.

We have holes everyone on D. It leads to guys being a bit out of position as we have to cover or help others for this or that. We could use an upgrade at Edge, DT, and CB. Any of them would have knock on effects and would improve the rest of the defense... because we lack talent.
 
You have to combine the draft and free agency.

Moves on the DL need to come from both avenues.

My preference though is to spend the real money on the pass rushing DEs and use mid tier free agency and the middle rounds of the draft to find big uglies for the interior.

Newton at 292 looks a bit smallish to be a full time DT.

He made some plays with quickness but also got blown off the ball too in the inside rush game.

I wonder if size as well as toe injury helped him fall out of the first round.

Aaron Donald played at 283 but he was an absolute freak.

A lot of the guys this size are situational pass rushers coming in on long yardage.

But you dont take guys in Round 2 to be rotation pieces.
 
We sucked against the run early in the year, because our secondary was so bad.

When Sain got up to speed and we added Lattimore, it allowed Chinn and Wagner to come down him more often and it improved.
 
The rush defense never looked worse though than the past 2 games after those factors were already on the table.
 
Rush defense is bad because LB's don't have side line to side line speed ..Also doesn't help that players wait for the ball carrier to get to them instead of attacking the ball carrier..they get caught flat footed and then get juked out of their jock straps and leads to a long gain or TD.
 


Maybe Burch would help our run defense on the edge- pretty big guy

I’m wondering if we look at FA for OT? Ersery looks good, but I thought there were questions about technique?

I think the draft is strong in DL and CB, too, I think.

Agree with this - you have to build to win your Division first and foremost and that means beating the Eagles.

quality OTs rarely hit the open market. Stafford (if he gets to free agency) is probably the best OT that would be available. But he’s had injury issues and is turning 30. He was healthy this season though.

I would think the Ravens will make a play to keep him.

Draft is likely the way we have to add talent/depth at OT.

In addition to Staley Alaric Jackson from the Rams would be a nice target. Had a good year and just 26.

I get what you were saying about quality LTs. I mean what kind of moron allows them to leave for pennies on the dollar. That’s just crazy talk.
