The 2025 Draft Thread

This team needs a complete reset on the DL.

There are teams with no quarterback, no great skill talent etc but they can find guys in the draft who can stop the run at an NFL level.

You need size and strength which this team overlooks to get smaller quicker players.

This approach didn’t work for Quinn in Dallas.

It didn’t work for Miami and Denver teams Washington faced in Super Bowls past.

KC and Philly can stop the run. Ditto for Baltimore.

31st in league?

Let’s get this done.

Need some speed and strength combo as well. What a benefit to be able to pressure the QB with just the front 4.

Both trenches need help and some should be available in FA prior to the draft.

We need more athletic freaks on defense. We don't have them. Allen and Payne are nice players, but they're not Carter. They're not Brandon Fiske. They're not Dexter Lawrence, Quinnen Williams.

Outside of Sanristil and Luvu, we don't have anyone that really gets the juices flowing. I like Fowler and Dorance Armstrong, but they're not putting the fear of God into DCs. I'd love someone like Mike Green in the draft--give Quinn and Whitt a Parsons-like sack artist. Sign Javon Holland--upgrade from Quan Martin. We need more playmakers.

Peters and Company can literally go best player available for the entire draft. This is an amazing position to be in. One that we have not been in since pre Dan. We have a star Quarterback. Sure we would love a cornerback that can lock down wr1s or a wr2 that will scare defenses and help Terry. Truth is we got smashed by a team with a very deep roster.

Our defense could not handle Saquon or AJ.
I don’t blame Peters or the Coaches, or the players.
They gave it everything they had. It wasn’t enough.
Double edged sword here, IMO. Yes, it’s great to be able to go BPA, but the reason we’re in this position is we have holes/weaknesses all over the roster.

While I think additions to the skill groups (receiver, rb, corner and TE) are definitely needed - to pull a defender out of the box, take pressure off Daniels, to allow us to play with 7 in the box more often on D, etc… I think our trenches are probably our biggest issue. Can’t run the ball, can’t stop the run, and have trouble getting pressure without blitzing (particularly w/ Luvu).

Would love to add a stud OT, but that’s almost certainly not coming in FA, and with where we pick, I think a good G is more likely/doable. Dline depth in the draft should hopefully allow us to land a good one there as well. I also wouldn’t be opposed to two early dlinemen and a back and G in the middle rounds.

I’d love to add a deep threat, a YAC monster (or two) and a guy (or two) that can beat man coverage. As of now, my wildcard is a TE in the 1st, though I think the top guys will be gone.

I like Martin overall, but man, it seems like he’s never in position to challenge for the ball in the air. Would love for Owens to step up in a big way - he’s got that Sean Taylor sort of elite athleticism.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this… when you count starting OL (5) and DL that play regularly (we’ll say 8) that’s 13 players. We legitimately need to replace 9-10 of those guys. Or at least displace and move some to the bench. Thats a 70% turnover rate on the lines.
Biadasz, Armstrong, Newton are the only locks but there a couple others worth bringing back most likely.

Beyond that we can use 3 new backs (Ekeler and Robinson are fine to bring back with a burner type, too, though). Receivers we need 1 high end and one good one.

LBs having another good one doesn’t hurt. Need another CB1 candidate so we can account for Lattimore injuries and let Sainristil move around and use his whole skill set.

Need a safety as Chinn is a FA. I’d look to bring him back…

Lots of holes. Scary.

This. Watching the game tonight was a gut punch because you could see how badly we are outmatched in the trenches. Looking at other teams with mobile QB's, you can immediately see how hard it is to defend a Hurts or Lamar if they have a real, dynamic running game. It would change so much for us to add that. Everyone is pointing at the need for an upgrade at RB, but we just have to upgrade on OL. I'm really hoping for a small move up for an impact LT. Coleman just obviously doesn't have the juice there.

I think we are realistically, more than one offseason away from being the kind of roster that should be favored to win the super bowl, even with Jayden Daniels. Fixing both lines isn't a one year project.

KDawg, do you see the run defense being a DL issue? It feels like we need improved team speed all over on defense. I love Wagner and Luvu, but they aren't really sideline to sideline pursuit guys. How would you address fixing the defense as a whole, but especially, the run defense?

Luvu has to make a living with his quickness and speed and ball instincts because he sure as heck isn’t engaging OL directly in the hole to any great effect in standing guys up.

More often then not at his size he is an easy block in the run game.

I think we need a lot more team speed (though we are faster than last year). But I think our defensive line has been a CONSISTENT problem in the run game for years now. Look at our defense. What has and hasn't changed over the years where we have continued to have some issues against the run?

We've changed literally every position on the field except for defensive tackles. We've had some new rotational pieces, and at times we looked a bit better against the run. But for the most part the DTs are the guys who have been there.

Now, I think our edges are pretty overall poor as run defenders, too. We don't set edges well. We don't clog gaps well. And we can't pressure with four consistently.

Our OL and DL are major issues that need to be remedied.

Agree about OT in the first. But, I honestly think moving up 5 spots could net you Josh Conerly, and moving up 10 could get Banks or Simmons. I think it would be worth the price to lock up a premium player at a premium position where you just don't find decent free agents. It's a shame Bruce Allen isn't still a GM somewhere or maybe we could fleece him out of a LT.

Regarding TE, I think there is an outside chance that Colston Loveland is there. But, I think I really like Harold Fannin Jr. for us. He reminds me of this guy...

Harold Fannin measured 6'3" and 231 pounds at the Senior Bowl and had 33 and 3/8" arms. Jordan Reed was 6'2 and 1/2" and 236 pounds with 33 inch arms. I see a lot of the same smooth athleticism, rotue running, wiggle, and YAC in Fannin. Sure, he played in a smaller conference, but he showed up huge against top 25 teams. Fannin posted 11 catches for 137 yards and a TD against Penn State, and 8 catches for 145 yards and a TD against Texas A&M. I think he's a player.

Is Fannin going to give you that hulking dual threat TE that clears out lanes with power in the running game? No. Probably not. But you can line him up at TE or as a big slot, he's going to get open and catch the ball, he has 4.62 speed to threaten downfield, and he's great after the catch. And, while as an inline TE, he lacks size, imagine running the ball out of a 3WR set with Fannin at slot and Higgins and Terry outside. That is a lot of size and blocking at WR. I'd love Fannin as early as the 2nd.

Mike Green's hand size is small. Somehow Edge players with hand size that small almost always bust.

Blah.

Lots of long corners in the class though.

Without knowing what I'm talking about, I kinda want us to trade down to pick up an extra second and third.

It all depends on who falls to our pick of course, but I think giving Peters more ammo may be the way to go.

Short arms too. 32 and 2/8. But, he did get his weight up to 251. Look at his take, it's ridiculous. He isn't making it to 29, and if he did, I'd grab him unless a top 3 tackle was there.

Bottom line is we are going to need more impact draft picks in 2025 than we had to support Daniels from 2024.

For sure - we need to put a lot more talent around JD. But we have a LOT of positions that need an upgrade. OT, WR #1B, RB, TE, Edge, CB, DT, S.

Pretty much everything apart from QB!!!

Only so much you can do via the draft and it’s always a mistake to reach to address a need. Free agency is going to play a big part as well.

Eagles starting DT’s are Carter (9th overall pick) and Davis (13th overall pick).
Ravens DT Travis Jones was a mid to late third rounder. Chiefs Tershawn Wharton who also had 6.5 sacks inside in 2024 was an undrafted free agent.

Even Chris Jones was originally a mid second round pick back in the day.

Of course some of these players are more than run stuffers, which is what I was pointing to.

Finding a dominant two way DL is hard but finding a capable run defender is really not.

And Washington hasn’t been able to stop the run for the past 3 coaching staffs.

I know you know this but stopping the run is about a lot more than your DTs. Though having quality DTs obviously helps.

I think a lot of our issues against the run have been a relative inability to set the edge and also poor backer play. Linebackers were much better this year mind you.

Stopping the run is a group effort on D. Setting the edge and being gap sound with everyone executing their assignment.

Eh. I think last years class is going to be very good. Coleman and Newton are already contributors and Daniels and Mikey are already stars. That’s pretty good from a class, and that’s one year. I bet another couple turn into good players. You have to have patience with rookies.
