Panthers almost beat the Eagles but the receiver tucked the ball into the ground so it wasn't a catch.

This really is surprising. Sam Darnold and Rich Gannon in Oakland are the only 2 failed starters that I can remember suddenly becomming good overnight. I guess maybe Baker too but at least he had some success early.

To a lesser degree add Baker Mayfield to the list. Baker was all but relegated to bum and backup status.

What about Geno Smith? Dude was a backup for almost a decade.

I remember Gannon in Minnesota and he actually looked like he was going to be a good QB he just never got a real chance for many years.

I had considered Geno Smith but he really wasn't all that good in Seattle other than the '22 season. He is currently sitting 22nd in QBR with 14 TDs and 12 picks.

Gannon in Minnesota didn't impress. He started 12, 11, and 12 games in 3 consecutive seasons so it looks to me that he was given a fair chance to seize the starting job but he kept gettiing benched for sucking. I remember his cup of coffee with the Redskins, he was just another body in the long list of QBs here. Then he goes to the Raiders and is MVP of the league, still one of the most surprising things I have ever seen in football.

The other thing about that Raiders team is Bill Callahan was the coach and he ran Jon Gruden’s pass-first west coast offense (based on the Andy Reid system) and they threw the ball a million times.

Then Bill takes over for Jay and implemented an offense that resembled the 1960’s wishbone run exclusively offense.

Just ironic.
 
I would think Jared Goff is another guy you'd have to say is thriving after being given up on in LA. Not that he didn't have some success with the Rams, but they clearly decided he wasn't the QB that could get them to the Promised Land again. He hasn't shown that yet in Detroit, but man, two back to back 12 win seasons (and likely better than that this year) and he's having an incredible 2024 season (72.4% completion rate, 25 TDs to 10 INTs and a 109 QBR - and not done yet. He has absolutely blossomed in Detroit.
 
Yeah, Imma skip over to the Bills/Lions game at 4:30. Should be good.

Yeah this is a good one too. I felt so so badly for Goff when he was traded. I mean you were just in the Super Bowl and then were told you aren't good enough as he was traded to a team who has sucked for generations. By the way I shared that evaluation.

I can't imagine how that must have felt. He was kind of a throw in for Detroit who wanted the picks more but needed a body to play QB until they found their guy. His turnaround is one of the most surprising things I've seen in sports in a while, love to see it.
 
Wow. Seeing per Adam Schefter that the Falcons are going to release Cousins at seasons end. That puts them on the hook for $100 million in guaranteed money - for not even a single season of play. What a disaster. I think this is one of the most shocking things to happen in quite awhile. I know Cousins has had a bad year, and he was grossly overpaid to begin with, but to outright release him - just mind boggling.
 
Cousins was actually pretty good for them for a handful of games. He's just been garbage in the last 4-5 and the first game or 2 of the season.

Cousins is just a QB who probably needs a good coordinator and was never worth what they are paying him.
 
The thing is, other than coming off an injury, they knew exactly who Cousins was when they gave him that contract - a very accurate, efficient passer of the ball but not a guy who is going to elevate everyone around him or carry a team deep into the playoffs. Everyone in the NFL at this point knows who he is. So how do you sign that kind of contract and then give up on him before he's played one season?

It may be the right decision, which is the craziest part of the entire thing.
 
Well he's been ridiculously bad.

The thing is, it's going to cost them that much to cut him, why not keep him around as the #2?
