2024 Roster Updates

Jimmy Johnson got rid of 32 guys in Dallas.

Ron left this cupboard pretty bare - there were a certain number of NFL caliber players who have shown they can play (at various levels) and then there is the abyss of guys with jerseys who still haven't proven they belong.

I don't expect to see Dyami Brown back. Cole Turner is another one. Jonathan Williams. Braden Daniels.

I also don't think Emmanuel Forbes is a lock to return.

Commanders signed ex-Steelers corner James Pierre, 27, to a one year contract.

He was undrafted in 2020 and has been a staple on the Steelers special teams.

Pierre has six starts at corner.

That is an interesting signing. At first blush, it doesn't look good for Stromberg.

It doesn't really bode well for all of the interior players hold over from 2023.

Chris Paul was rated a 37 by PFF as a guard in 2023, among the worst in the league.

Saahdiq Charles is gone.

At center, you have Tyler Larsen as a free agent but he is 32/33 years old and looks to be more past than present. He also is a guy that comes in and plays decently and then gets hurt and misses time.

The fact Deiter has starting experience and can flex to both positions is a bonus. At 27, he's another competitive candidate.

IMO, you will probably see the team move on from Braden Daniels and Stromberg either in camp or after the 2024 season. These were Ron's picks and neither player seemed to stand out enough to beat out what was in fact one of the weakest interior line groupings in the NFL.

It's not like these guys in camp were fighting for spots behind the Chiefs starting interior 3 players.

It doesn't bode well for any player not named Terry, Jon or Daron, honestly.

Chris Paul should never have been in line to be a starting guard. The fact Ron thought he and Sadiq could compete for that spot and be succesful shows how behind the times he was.
Saahdiq Charles is gone.
He wasn't very good, and was hurt a lot.

Larsen is not coming back, though I think he's a really good backup center. But he shouldn't be a starter. Somebody should pick him up. Honestly, I have literally no idea about their depth, but if either the Chiefs or the Jags needed a backup center, I'd give him a ring. Pederson runs a variety of Reid's system, and Reid runs Reid's system, and Biennemy tried to run Reid's system. So, at least he knows the system and a lot of the terminology.

Peters clearly looked at the OL, held his nose, and looked away. I'm figuring they don't think Paul will be on the roster after roster cuts. There's literally no reason for them to cut him now, though, so they'll let him compete.

Based on the team's website:
Tackle:
- Cornelius Lucas
- Andrew Wylie
- Alex Akingbulu (I honestly didn't remember who this was, apparently he was in camp, was cut, signed to the practice squad, and elevated to the active roster the final game.)
- Trent Scott
- Braden Daniels
- Mason Brooks (He's listed as "OL" on the website. I think he was practicing at Tackle though.)

Guard
- Sam Cosmi
- Chris Paul
- Nick Allegretti
- Michael Deiter
- Julian Good-Jones (I had no recollection who this was)

Center
- Tyler Biadasz
- Ricky Stromberg
- Michael Deiter

I bolded the ones who most likely make the roster. There are 7 names on the bolded list. 1 was re-signed as a backup (Lucas), 1 is a solid starter (Cosmi) and 5 are new signings.

They're clearly going to draft a starting LT. They're also going to probably draft another OL, and most likely another tackle, at some point in the draft.

Everything I've heard about Ricky Stromberg has been positive. It's possible Peters didn't have him highly graded before he came out, or they clearly didn't see enough last year to factor him into their plans. However, I think he most likely gets a season under the new regime to prove himself somewhere.

My guess is they are going to assume Paul is a camp cut, Allegretti and Dieter will battle for LG with a possible draft pick, Stromberg will compete for the backup cetenter spot.

Braden Daniels better show that he's come a LONG way in order to make the team or he'll be a final roster cutdown for sure.

Teams typically carry 9-10 OL. Right now, they have 7 guys you can be sure will be on the roster. I think Stromberg is going to make it assuming he's healthy. FWIW, Leno spoke glowingly about him in the interview with Keim.

There are 2-3 more spots available. One could go to Stromberg, though it's not a sure thing. One for a starting LT. I don't think those other 2-3 more players are on the roster yet. I think everybody else is being cut.

The last of the Ron drafts

We take offensive linemen in Rounds 3 and 4 and neither one of them looked good enough to compete for a spot on one of the lower rated lines in the league.

Daniels was so bad they had to put him on IR before the final cut down because there is no way he was going to get a roster spot and it was too embarrassing for Ron to just release him.

That's crazy. At least Kam was a hit. But wow is that an indictment. Not a single member of the draft class re-signed.

What made them worse was we all saw better options in real time for a lot of his picks. It wasn't even revisionist history.

Everybody on the BGO Podcast, as well as on the board Mock Drafts had guys they were 'excited about' and could identify as picks that would make a lot of sense, only to watch Ron go in a different direction and ultimately be proven wrong.

It always felt like Ron wanted to prove himself the smartest guy in the room. Forbes is a good example. Many rated him as a second rounder and even though a projected high first rounder fell to their draft position they stuck with their plan and opted for the higher risk player.

Jamin Davis over Christian Darrisaw
Quan Martin over O'Cyrus Torrence
Forbers over Jack Campbell / Christian Gonzalez / Joey Porter Jr
Phidarian Mathis over Alex Pierce / Troy Andersen / Chad Muma
Percy Buterl over Jake Ferguson / Spencer Burford / Isaiah Likely
Christian Holmes over Brock Purdy
Sam Cosmi over Dillon Radunz / Andre Cisco / Joseph Ossai

I specifically named these players because these are all players we've covered on the podcast as prospects were interested in, or have seen people on the board call out or mock up for the team.

Yep. There's nothing wrong with trusting your board and assessing players differently than others, but when you do that you need to be right more often than you are wrong. The 2020 draft has a .0000 batting average.

Oddly, it looked like such a promising draft:

Chase Young felt like a no brainer
I didn't like the Antonio Gibson pick as I thought we were in good shape at running back, but was talked into liking him and he came out pretty strong.
Sadiq Charles was a pick I understood as we needed someone with the potential to replace Trent Williams. What a disaster of a pick.
Gandy Golden wasn't a good pick. He was tall and slow.
Keith Ismael: I was fine with grabbing a center in the fifth, but he didn't stick. For some reason, I think he's still playing elsewhere. Not sure.
K Hudson produced okay for where he was picked. Hard to complain. Almost feel like this was more of a coaching failure than a player failure.
Kam Curl and Smith Williams obviously way outperformed their 7th round status.

So, it really wasn't a bad looking draft at the time. But if four years later not one of them is on the roster...? The draft sucked.

I think part of that draft was bas luck. Absent any hindsight and revisionist history, just about everybody was thrilled to get Young. The QB option was probably Tua and he wasn’t seen as nearly a good prospect as Young. And he started well, then everything collapsed after the injury.

They blew the Gibson pick because Scott Turner tried to turn him into Emmit Smith because Scott Turner is a damn fool. They drafted a RB who was a receiver and then used him as a power back.

They actually got productive play out of the lower round guys, and finally, if you get 2-3 years of being on the roster and contributing on ST from a 5-7th round pick, that’s good.

The combination of bad luck, misuse, and bad choices crushed this draft class.

I’ve pointed this out before. Ron built through the draft for the most part. A few FA additions here and there, but something like 16 of the 24 projected starters were drafted.

The just drafted badly without any type of a strategy and developed players horribly.

I have hope we will draft better and develop players better as well.

We as fans have a limited perspective. Chase Young had the measurables and the accolades coming out of college to project him to being a top NFL DL.

What we don't have access to but the professionals do is the in person interviews and due diligence done by the front office to determine what the attitude and work ethic of the player is, how he deals with coaches and teammates and what are his true motivators.

It's those intangibles as much as the measurables we can read about in a draft profile that really determine whether a guy is going to be successful.

That's what I hope changes with Adam Peters.

RGIII had ego issues and was a selfish guy that didn't really fit well into the team concept.

Dwayne Haskins was beyond immature and based on the scheme he was running in college with one reads and colored play charts should never have been drafted at #15.

You can make an argument that a first class GM would have been alerted to the same kind of ego and selfishness in Chase Young before the 2020 draft. Nothing kills a prospect more than the thought he doesn't have to improve to be successful at the next level and the talk at the time was Chase was 'ready to be a star'.

I would think a Ron Wolf or a guy like the Chiefs Brett Veach would be able to separate through these issues with prospects and take other players at these spots or move down and draft a Justin Herbert who plays the most important position in the sport.

Everyone was 'meh' with the Eagles last season o_O

I welcome additions to the wide receiver room. But what I also want to see is Dyami Brown on someone else's roster, being paid for getting a suntan on the bench in September.

I feel like we almost have to spend a *higher* pick on WR in the draft. As much as we need an OT after we draft a QB I would not be at all shocked if that next pick isn’t a WR depending on who’s sitting there.
