Howling for Howell

I think that Ramsey reminded a lot of us of Rypien. Just a big, strong armed statue.

I liked Ramsey and had visions of him as a "Gibbs" QB in the Williams, Schroeder, and Rypien mode. Thing is, if you are going to have that QB you also need the Hogs. Spurrier believed in the sieve.

I honestly question the evaluation process more than anything else. Those guys all played elsewhere and had a very similar lack of success. It's not like they moved on from here to have lucritive careers. You also look at the picks that were NOT made. I think it's been a major failure of talent evaluation, and Snyder has had his hand in his share of those decisions. This team could have had Justin Herbert with Christian Darrisaw at LT simply by taking them with our picks instead of Chase Young and Jamin Davis. We could have O'Cyrus Torrence at OG instead of Quan Martin at DB.


The moves i pointed out were just the latest regime where we had an inferior personnell manager (Rivera) with Bruce Allen (Snyder) and Vinny Cerrato (Snyder) before them.

Get good football people evaluating the talent and the picks get better and better. We can count on out one hand the current roster players that are hits.

Jon Allen
Daron Payne
Kam Curl
Jahan Dotson?
Brian Robinson?
Sam Howell?
Kendall Fuller

There are depth guys that are not all stars, but because of draft status you can consider them hits


I would be interested to see how many, on average, drafted players actually make up a teams roster and where we stand.

Ron drafted Sam but the next coach will get credit for him once the team starts winning.

And that’s fair in a crazy world where so many other picks and signees this team has made turned out to be cases of rolling snake eyes.

I've no problem with this. It would probably be less fair if Rivera was an offensive mind, but I don't think he's had much to do with Sam or his development. Actually, based on quotes, he wasn't even aware the kid was really on the team last year. Paid no attention to him and was surprised with how he did at Dallas.

The more interesting question to me is whether Sam is how scheme dependent Howell might be? Does he need a West Coast based scheme to be good? Do we look for someone off that Reid Tree or look into coordinators that have succeeded with shorter QBs like Brees? The other interesting question is why is Bienemy not running more? Is it because we stink at it and it would just result in too many third and longs or is it something more philosophical.

I'm still intrigued by Bienemy. The offense has definitely improved as the year has gone on though I also think he was too slow to use the bench. Clearly, getting rid of Gates and Charles has been a positive. There were quite a few drop backs yesterday where Howell held the ball too long, but it either worked out or he escaped harm by scrambling or throwing the ball away. But that immediate pocket collapse, in your face pressure, seems to happen a lot less these past few weeks.

Howell, Brian Robinson Jr., Jahan Dotson - these guys were good draft picks and may turn out to be a great triumvirate for the team going forward.

Meanwhile, Rivera and Co. strategized having a great defense and special teams with the ability to run the ball and control the clock.

We don't have a solid defense, our special teams outside of Tress Way over the past four years has been inconsistent, and the offensive line effectively prevents Robinson Jr. or other backs from having consistent 90-100 yard performances.

Fans yell for more runs in the offense. From what I see the offensive line doesn't push people back, at best they stand guys up and Robinson Jr. has to crash the line and try and lean forward for 2-3 yards per carry.

It's only on the screen passes and delayed draws where you see productivity from the running backs.

You show me a better offensive line and I think Robinson is a 1,200 yard back for us.

The thing that keeps rolling through my head the last few days is Robinson's huge pass plays. Who thought he had that kind of speed? He outran the entire Seattle defense twice? As a runner, we've never seen hints of that.
 
I think that Sam’s ability to throw on the move, from multiple platforms and arm angles, are the result of playing years of competitive baseball at middle infield.
 
And yet I continue to hear talking heads on WFAN Washington radio and other media make limiting comments like:

"Well, Howell had those 3 or 4 touchdown passes, true. But on that last drive before the half he missed Terry McLaurin on that pass over the middle that would have set the team up for a field goal attempt and more points. So I am giving him a B+".

Those kinds of comments convince me that a lot of the people on these programs were not here when Washington won anything nor did they come from markets where they had successful quarterbacks and teams in general.

I can't remember the last time Mahomes threw 3 or 4 touchdowns and a guy on KC radio was complaining about an errant throw or a called timeout.

These guys here make it seem as if successful quarterbacks never suffer any adversity in games and never make any mistakes.

From what we have seen from Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence, and Mahomes himself this season these guys have ALL made mistakes and their teams have lost games as a result of them.

The irony? Troy Aikman says Washington has found its quarterback. It takes a Cowboy to say that????

A lot of opinions of sports talking heads are about validating their earlier opinions. Many of them see a 5th round pick and say he would be nothing. They probably made statements at the start of the season saying Washington was playing Howell to tank and get Caleb Williams. So every comment now has to be to knock him down in some way. When he plays poorly, they are giddy and go on and on about it. When he plays well, they overanalyze and find little things he didn’t do right and color their whole opinion with those little things. All so they can justify their earlier opinions instead of just saying “I may have been wrong about this guy. He’s really played well this year and exceeded my expectations”. It’s that easy, but many won’t do it.

Seriously, it amazes me how some so called fans on social media are hell bent on drafting the QB flavor of the month before we see Sam play out the season.
We used to be a smart fanbase but I guess 25 years of Danny ran a lot of them off and now all we get is knee jerk hot takes after every play.

I sincerely believe guys like Sheehan,Russell, Loverro etc look for flaws with a fine-toothed comb on the young fella.

Just shake my head on a lot of that stuff. Bieniemy really likes the kid and where he's headed. Good enough for me.

He is 23 and has started 12 NFL games.

Yes, in 2 games this season, against Buffalo and the Giants, he has thrown a combined 7 INTs.

Yes, he is leading the league in sacks.

He is also leading the league in pass attempts. When was the last time a guy with 12 starts led the league in pass attempts?

He is playing on a team that since 2010 (the year we drafted Trent Williams) has drafted all of 6 guys for the OLine in the first 3 rounds. Only 2 of them are still here and one of those is a rookie on IR.

I don't want it to sound like I'm making excuses because Sam sure isn't making any excuses. He stands in front of the media every week and takes responsibility for his actions like a QB with a decade of experience.

I expected there would be days like yesterday.

Peyton Manning once threw 6 INTs in a game against the Chargers. Stabler threw 7 in a game against the Broncos (in '77 when no one threw it 40 times a game). Namath threw 6 INTs in a game on 3 separate occasions.

Hell, this isn't even the worst it's been for Washington against the Giants. Jay Schrader and Sammy Baugh both had games where they threw for 6 INTs against that horrible team from the Big Apple.

I still believe he is our best bet for the future.

I expected there would be days like yesterday. I expect there will be more.

Even so, Sam is my guy.

You can make an argument to me about replacing Howell once we address OL, TE and defense and it can be shown he is the one slowing down the bus.

Great arm.
Mobile and athletic.
Tough as nails.
Oozes leadership and accountability.
Young and mistake-prone.
Work in progress.
Highly coachable.

My God - isn’t that everything this fanbase has pined for for years?!

If it's a bad play, he let's it go and moves on to the next play. You absolutely love that in a young QB!

I have no idea what the agenda is with the "Get rid of Howell Crowd" and let's trade up...which means mortgaging more of our future draft capital on a lottery pick.
If one of the premier left tackles are there where we pick in round one, you take him and start building this line for Sam. Give him his Hogs.
You take the LT over any TE sitting on the board. Can we all agree on that?
