Russell Wilson probably doesn't meet your criteria, but he was a very good QB for a long time and was a third rounder.

Leno will be 33 years old next year. So I think that's a significant concern... and he's not a top 15 LT which I think should be the base goal.

One guess on my part is the team ultimately admits the signing of Gates was a mistake and we eat his guarantees to cut him next offseason.

From what I have seen I don't think he is even a top backup off the bench to keep. He's a practice squad caliber player.

Cosmi is a decent backup/rotational guy. I don't unfortunately see him becoming more than that.

He can't get out of the 1st round of the playoffs, if he makes the playoffs.

Prudy is the closest I can think of because he made the NFC Championship last year.

I’m not saying I’m a fan, because I’m not, but he is a 4x Pro Bowler and been voted by writers as a Top 100 player 7x. Despite my dislike, I could never argue that he does not qualify as being a ’successful‘ qb.
 
If you guys haven't already, you need to listen to the John Keim pod with Marty Mornhigweg talking about Sam.

Just for a pure entertainment standpoint. He's like a character out of a movie.
 
Where a player is chosen in the draft is a question that is often asked on losing teams where management is keeping underperforming #1 and #2 picks to avoid admitting they made mistakes in the draft, etc.

When the Redskins, 49ers, Giants, Cowboys, Patriots, etc. were winning blocks of Super Bowls some high picks didn't make the teams. But no one lost sleep over it. In part it was a sign of how good the current rosters were.

There were different reasons why certain players weren't picked high but the bottom line is quarterbacks historically have been found throughout the draft just as any other position.

Hall of Famers Roger Staubach, Steve Young, Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Brett Favre, and others were NOT #1 picks.

Even where guys were taken high in the draft the best passers were often picked AFTER a guy or two that became outright busts.

Patrick Mahomes was drafted at #10 by KC but that was after the Bears traded a fortune to move up in the draft and take Mitch Trubisky.

Dan Marino was taken #27 overall in a draft where 4 or 5 quarterbacks were taken before him. How many of those guys like Todd Blackledge and Tony Eason as well as Ken O'Brien are consigned to the dustbin of history?
 
First round picks don't work out.....a lot. We had Shuler who lost the gig to Gus. Haskins who probably was taken way too early because of Danny. I won't throw RG3 here because his injury was bad and the team should have IR'd him for all of his 2nd year. Look at the class a few years ago where they had 5 in the first 15. Lawerence, Wilson, Lance, Fields and Jones. 1 out of 5 look like NFL starters.

It's amazing (and depressing) to think how many 1st round QBs we've drafted that hasn't worked out. Shuler, Ramsey, RGIII, Haskins. Top of the round, middle of the round, bottom, it didn't matter. All failed for one reason or another.

I always wondered if Ramsey had a real OL and also not Spurrier getting him killed, if his career would have been different. I liked him.
 
I never thought Ramsey was NFL starting caliber but I think a lot of fans did.

It did not surprise me when Gibbs, in his first game back, took Ramsey out vs. Chicago after he took a big hit and It was Mark Brunell time from then on.

I thought by then he was ruined. But, you might be right.
 
Well, that’s a valid point. Hard to know how any potential QB’s career would have gone in a different setting. Ramsey just never seemed to have a ton of confidence to me but maybe that had to do with not being set up for success
