One big change, passing yards are way down.
2021: 3419 yds
2022: 1444 yds

Even if he reels off 300 games the rest of the way, he finishes the season well below 3000 yds and more realistically he probably finishes with 1,000 yds less than just a year ago.

Just based on observation, there’s only one area I’ve seen major improvement in and that is Heinicke is getting rid of the ball more quickly than he did in 2021 and even throwing the ball away occasionally which he rarely if ever did in 2021. That probably accounts for the reduced sack numbers.

The total passing yards are way down due to 7 games vs 16. Per game it’s 206 TY vs 214 LY.

Biggest difference I see is far less scrambling for 1st downs.
 
Yeah, sorry for the brain-fart on that, I accounted for the 4 remaining games but not that he wasn’t playing to start the season :joker:. Appreciate the catch(es). Will correct the original post.

I'm just glad we don't have to play Seattle, they're gonna be chippy, and desperate, as hell.

San Fran won the division last night, but they're only 1/2 half game back of Minnesota for the no. 2 spot, so I don't think they're done playing yet.

Seattle falling to 7-7 puts them 1 back from us going into this weekend with 3 left on their schedule (Chiefs, Jets, Rams). WE HAVE TO HANDLE OUR BUSINESS this weekend. Winning this weekend all but locks up the 6th spot because that would give us 1.5 over Seattle and 2 (1 win plus the tie breaker) over the Giants.
 
With all the injury they have along the Oline,especially at guard, it begs the question:

Where's Chris Paul?

I know he's a 7th round pick and some would still say he's a rookie but it's late December....he's not a rookie anymore,imo.
Look across the league. Linemen get drafted in the 5,6,7 rounds and contribute that year or get in the rotation.

Charles is obviously a miss/bust. Chris Paul headed that way too?

OG was one of our deepest positions coming into the season because of the versatility.

That's not to say it's one of the strongest.. but there are a lot of options in there that would likely be a more comfortable situation than a 7th round rookie starting. Norwell, Turner, Schweitzer, Charles, Larsen, Cosmi.... all guys that have some level of NFL experience and are ahead of Paul on the depth chart. You hope they aren't holding him back because of his draft status, but we'd all be kidding ourselves if we acted like it didnt happen.
 
Every offensive coordinator isn’t Kyle Shanahan but every one could steal ideas from him, no?

Deepest in term of numbers maybe but not ability. Moving from Scherff and Flowers to over-the-hill Norwell and Turner is a borderline organizational crime.
 
I get not paying Scherff that kind of money but the other organizational crime is knowing you're not gonna pay him and not trading him to get draft compensation.

And Ron,like alot of coaches, went with two guys he knows instead of looking for an actual viable replacement. He just looked at Turner and Norwell in too nostalgic a light instead of the reality of where they actually were in their careers,imo.

It's a blind spot for alot of coaches.

Right, that's why i said it wasnt the strongest. :)

I don't blame them for moving on from Scherff. I never will. The investment was risky. Additionally, I have a feeling he was the one that wanted out, more than we wanted to go.

Flowers is still walking the streets. Nobody signed him.... I have a sneaking suspicion he knows he's not gonna get paid at OG and he put his foot down to play OT..
 
I agree completely about Scherff. I just strikes me that they tried to go cheap and familiar with the two replacements.

Flowers not being anywhere in the league this season is definitely head scratcher.
 
The decision on guard feels strange because of the decision to acquire Wentz.

If they truly thought that they were getting their QB then you have to protect him. Moreso, a QB with an injury history and a rep for holding onto the ball too long. Unless after absorbing Wentz's salary they had no cash left (which I still wonder about) it makes little sense to trade draft picks, take on a large salary, and then not go that extra little bit to help him be successful.

I mean during those first four games, Turner clearly wanted to focus on the passing game and the long ball in particular. To do that, you have to have a stout pass blocking line. Given that, the moves were even more head scratching. I expected them to lose Scherrf, but keep Flowers. I mean Flowers isn't as good, but he was cheaper fit in with Turner's scheme well and with him you didn't have to change almost half your oline in a year that you hoped would be your launch year.

That's a great play to call when your OL gives your quarterback ALL DAY to throw the ball. Behind Washington's line, he gets hit making that first pump and fumbles.
 
With Larsen out I don’t understand why we would not bring Flowers in if we have to move other guys around.

He’s only 28 and is familiar with the system.

Unless he has a drug problem that has not been publicized I don’t get it.

Nick Martin can’t play center at a level where the quarterback can survive.

I don’t know how he was able to scratch out a 7 year career mostly as a starter in the NFL.
