I'm afraid of betting the farm on a guy who is 33. He could play another 4 or 5 years. He could also play 1 or 2. Or less. And I'm afraid of doing that on a guy who might not be the same guy after that hand injury this year.

He threw at the Pro Bowl QB competition and looked amazing Bob. The hand is fine. I was concerned about that when he came back so quickly but there's clearly no issue. I agree it's unlikely to happen. But Wilson could squelch all the trade talk but never does. And they MET with the Bears last offseason about a trade. How do you account for that? Doesn't sound like an impossibility. The big barricade is they want a ton. A TON. You mentioned being crippled and seeing the Cowboys, Eagles, and even Giants dominate us. You know what is holding us back from dominating the NFC East and has for 30 years? It's not a shortage of draft picks. I'm just saying. A great veteran QB costs a king's ransom because they are worth it.

I was very surprised with his accuracy at the skills comp.

I know, John. I know.

It's just they are going to want more than a ton and while I don't mind taking a risk, it's been a very long time since one paid off for this team.

Oh I get it brother. No guarantee, even if they ante up and pay a huge price to get him, that it works out. I do think most fans have come to realize that all of this 'building' won't ultimately move the needle unless we find a franchise QB. We've shown almost no ability to find that hidden gem (Cousins is the lone exception in the past 15 years and even there he wasn't a true star and we managed to eff it all up). I totally get your position. My main argument with you is that we'd only get a couple seasons out of him. We'd likely get 5 good seasons and possibly more. That's why even if they are asking for ridiculous compensation, it might be worth it.

But I 100% hear everything you are saying, you know I do.

I think we do need to make sure Terry is off limits with this though.

McLaurin is our only true WR1 type weapon, and if we were to trade him, not only do we lose him, but we lose multiple 1st round picks to add talent with. Trading away Payne / Sweat is one thing because we would not need to be spending 1st round type investment on their replacement. Losing McLaurin wouldn't just hurt the heart strings, but it would seriously strain the offense, forcing us to further spend in FA or 'hope' we find another gem in day 2 or 3 of the draft.

I know that recent show that hyped up Washington as an ideal landing spot for Wilson referenced all the offensive weapons we have. But do we really? We have a handful of talented guys, but McLaurin is the only offensive star we have who would likely be leading the league if we had a real QB. Gibson is a tough, very good RB. Logan Thomas is probably a top 10 TE when he is 100%. That's it. So I think our attractiveness as an offense is marginal at best for an incoming QB. All that to say, you package McLaurin and you really have created an unattractive situation for a QB to step into.

That brings up something I’ve been wondering. Take Dax, Brown, Carter, Sims, etc for instance. Are they just not getting as much separation in games, OR is the lack of arm strength & possible lack of field vision from Heineken playing a part in their low production?

They may actually have decent if not good depth in the wr room, but the QB & or Turner is limiting their roles.

There are a lot of players that can possibly be weapons.

I think this question is like an onion... multiple layers and most make you want to cry.

Terry McLaurin had THE MOST contested catches in the NFL in 2021. How many times did we see him have to slow down allowing the DB to recover, putting him in a position for these contested catches?

I think the Turner playbook has something to do with it. I think we were relatively predictable. Now that COULD be because Turner had to call the game within the QB's abilities, but it also could be that the schematic playbook does not 'produce' separation as much as it relies on it's players to create it. Scheme can have as much to do with it as it does on defense. Our defensive philosophy is to let our front 4 win their matchup. I think there's a good amount of that happening here where the offense relies on the players to win their matchup. We see 'some' misdirection, but a lot of what we do, we can see it coming. When Deandre Carter goes in jet motion... 99.9% of the time it's just a play fake, we don't hand it off. Other than that, we see little pre-snap motion. How often did we see McLaurin motion across the formation? That's an easy tell if it's zone / man. How often did we see Gibson shift out of the backfield to an outside WR spot and move Terry inside to a better matchup? I don't remember much.

I do think there is another part of this that we're not changing the play at the line often (we may, it's just not obvious so i'll admit to that). I am curious how much of this is happening. The better QBs in the league have almost complete control at the line. Are we trusting Heinicke with that or its it a simple if this / than this with him only having 2 play options based on a simple base look of the defense.

I will say our weapons are not necessarily elite. That does not mean they CANT create separation, but the level of competition changes when you dont have a guy like Samuel on the field. When Dyami Brown (rookie) is facing a no. 2 CB in the NFL, the advantage is going to the CB. The trickle down effect matters. If Samuel / Logan Thomas are on the field, Dyami Brown is facing a 'lesser' level DB allowing for a 'better' matchup.

I also think part of this is TIME. I know we had a top 10 O-Line, but we all saw Heinicke having to scramble more than we wanted to. This is not all on the O-Line btw... Heinicke felt heat at times so there MAY have been separation and Heinicke either didnt see it, or was not in a position to be able to make the throw because he was running, off balance, or moving away from the play.

One of these days i'm going to just say screw it and buy ALL 22 so I can see a lot of this stuff, I just cant bring myself to spend that kind of money when i'm not doing it as a business.

Our weapons aren't elite - that may be the understatement of the year ST. We have McLaurin and Samuel (who proved himself at least a solid #2 in Carolina). Humphries is a solid backup. The rest of these guys are scrubs until they prove otherwise. Yes. A great QB can make scrubs look pretty good. But have any of us had any problem identifying Terry McLaurin as a great WR because Heinicke is so bad? McLaurin and Samuel are the only legit WRs on this team. I'm not saying absolutely that no one else can elevate their game (Carter might have potential) but I don't see any of these guys other than McLaurin as starting WRs, I just don't. Would love to be proven wrong though, but we've been living on possibilities for a lot of seasons.

I hear what you’re saying Boone but Heineken locks on Terry waaaaay too much. ESPN stats show Terry had 130 targets on the year. The next one down is Humphries with only 62. HeiniTurner never remedied this on the season enabling defenses to practically know where the pass is going. Whether it’s schematic or the qb being too comfortable throwing to Mac it needs fixing.

A good OC can get a lot more out of the current supporting cast than what the 2021 season showed. By no means do I believe Humphries or Carter are hall of farmers for the record, just we realistically do not know what’s there behind #17, imho.

I don’t like trading young for old. The team has tried it over and over and it doesn’t work. Washington needs to establish some form of consistency somewhere before any QB can succeed here. That consistency won’t come without good young players and patience.

Grabbing at someone else’s success story is a Dan Snyder move. I am 99% sure that it would bite us.

I say draft a guy. Start Heinie and work the rookie in. Set this team up for the next fifteen years.

Either the teams knows what its doing or it doesnt. If it does, long term is better.

If it doesn’t, none of this matters.

Totally valid position Henry. But it does ignore the fact that this is a completely new regime. I know - I have the same inner snark yelling at myself right now. But it is still true. We have the most competent front office in 20 years imho and things might be different this go-round, despite Satan at the top of the org chart.

I agree - at a minimum. Even if they trade for a QB, they need to draft one.

be careful, someone is hitting up twitter with fake reports about us and Desean Watson

That’s why I said only 99% sure. 🙂

turns out Game Pass is on sale right now til July for $9.99 total so i said screw it...

Just messing around looking at he Carolina game... i found THIS

I THINK this is Dyami Brown at the top but hard to tell, the Coaches Film function is very cumbersome, has a the play - forward - back b uttons in the middle of the screen, its weird, but whatever

This looks like cover 4 defense with 5 wr spread on offense. This is at the snap.

This is when Heinicke reaches his drop back.. PLENTY of pocket, he steps into a throw and hits Humphries who is the WR on the right side circled in blue. Look at the DB at the top. Hes completely flat footed, Brown (I'm pretty sure) blows RIGHT past him on the next picture but the ball is already out. Heinicke didnt even look at him.

If Heinicke throws this out front (this throw is within Heinickes arm strenght) and lets Dyami make a play it's an easy TD

At this point the ball is already caught and Brown SLOWS DOWN but still has a step.

I don't necessarily BLAME Heinicke because I dont know the read progression. I look at a play like that and wonder how much flexibility Heinicke has. If he see's Brown with single coverage at the top, is he allowed to look there FIRST and read the DB? 2 steps off the snap you could see the DB was not going to be able to recover. Dyami creates separation and we just missed it.

You broke down what I was “attempting” to convey, only MUCH betterer ST. There can only be so much done with Heineken as QB, though MUCH can be improved upon regarding Turner’s playcalling. If he doesn’t get his shit together he’s literally holding this offense back, regardless of QB.

It just appears to me that he’s unable to get out of his own way at times and I personally have doubts about ANY rookie qb’s development under him.

well to be fair, I dont know.

Did Heinicke make the right pre-snap read?
Did Heinicke make the right POST snap read?
Is the play call progression Carter (Bottom) / Humphries (Middle) / McLaurin (slot) / THEN Brown (opposite side? If this is the case, there's almost no chance Brown EVER gets looked at on that play call.
Are Turner / Rivera limiting Heinickes reads to half the field simply to get the ball out quicker?

A lot of these questions i simply dont have the answer to, but I think the bigger point is.... Russell Wilson / Aaron Rodgers / Pat Mahomes... those guys score a TD there probably 80% of the time. Those guys are likely given A LOT more control of the LOS and play manipulation at the line. Heinicke MIGHT have that much 'power' (for lack of a better term) to adjust to that kind of a matchup, or he might not... I simply don't know.

Nothing, another trade that'd send us backwards. Building the future doesn't start from living in his past accomplishments and just ignoring the capital it would take to bring him here as an issue the new contract he'll want will hinder us keeping younger talent.
