2021 Roster Updates

Yes. Must be a bad one. I don’t know if that kind of thing can be a career threatening injury or not but it’s certainly kept him from being a factor so far. Bummer.

All I really care about is how he is here. And, so far, he's been nothing but hurt.

They need to quit messing around and just shut him down on IR

If it’s a tear I can’t see it healing otherwise

I'm not happy that they played him vs New Orleans. He was fine against Atlanta. Then he didn't practice leading up to the game, but they still played him and he reaggravated it. Maybe he's still hurt even if they sat him that week, but we know for certain he aggravated it again and is out. Maybe he's not being honest because he wants to play, but I don't think the team has handled it well either.

Hopkins has been released...

Not really. He's missed some bad ones this season that have killed us. But the guy we just replaced him with looks subpar to me. I think making a 'change' just to 'make a change' midseason is a mistake. Not like Hopkins has been the reason for our losses this season, not by a longshot. You make a change in the offseason when quality kickers are available. This feels like a bone thrown to screaming fans vs. a move that makes the team immediately better.

The team has not responded to anything & nothing else was grabbing the players attention. Hopefully a wake up call to Collins

He may not be the single reason, but he's a big reason.

Offense drives all the way down...he misses
Offense gets a touchdown...he misses
Defense is looking at the score seeing 8 point difference instead of 5... it matters

His misses mean more than just the points he's left on the board. It mentally deflates both players and fans. I was a huge fan of HopSkins but he lost his sureness.

Not a fan of making changes to 'send a message'. That's something that works in High School, not the Pro's. It should always come down to 'does this change improve the roster and give us a better chance to win?' There's zero evidence Blewitt is an upgrade, even with Hopkins at his worst. I realize that's an unpopular opinion. We'll see if that works out (and also who picks up Hopkins and how that move looks a few years from now).

Seeing Gano still beat us definitely stings

I’m not shedding a tear for Hopkins. I may be cussing the next guy, but Hopkins earned his pink slip. Kickers come and go all the time. Only a few kickers seem to stick with one team for most of their careers. If a guy is struggling, then you bring in the next guy. The next guy could be worse, but I don’t believe they are cutting an integral piece on the team. Maybe I’m wrong, but I want whoever is kicking to succeed.

2 weeks ago Rivera clearly stated what happens to be my opinion. Almost all kickers go through a drought or stretches of struggling. It often pays off to stick with them and let them work through it (even though in the moment it may feel like they are hurting you more than helping). Hopkins is a great guy who his teammates and coaches love, he's got a booming leg on kickoffs, and he's been a very good kicker in stretches. I think it's a mistake, particularly in a season we're likely going nowhere and when he's had just a handful of games working with a brand new long snapper. Again, it's satisfying to cut guys when things are going badly because 'at least they are doing something' - but to release him for some random off the street who has no track record to show it's likely an upgrade - I kind of hate it.

I agree with Ted. If you think the players needed to be sent 'a message' - you send Landon Collins packing, not Hopkins.

I agree, but there is a lot of differences between cutting Collins and cutting Hopkins.

Salary cap hit
Depth at position
Reaction of locker room

You can't just cut Collins without all of those becoming a huge factor. You can cut a kicker like you change your mind about what beer to have with dinner.

Hopkins is going to picked up, make 45 in a row, and beat the WFT with a 55 yarder with no time left on the clock someday.

Book it.
