The Case Against a 'Splash' QB Move

Garoppolo to me is not the answer. He and others like Mariota have shown they are not capable of raising their teams.

A splash move to me is not bringing on a retread that his previous team couldn't wait to move on from.

Yes, Detroit traded Stafford but they weren't necessarily happy to see him go and recognized how in certain seasons he made a mediocre team look decent.

Garoppolo is a guy that hasn't shown me much. He was playing with the #1 defense in the NFL in 2019 and has one of the best running games in the league to support him.

Many quarterbacks out there could manage games and win double digits with that supporting cast.

I would love to see Jimmy G go to Detroit and try to win where he has to LEAD the team as Stafford did rather than ride the wave.

Sometimes you have to read a thread not just the thread title Bulldog :) Going for a 2nd tier guy isn’t one of the potential splash moves mentioned.

Well, to me there were only two splash moves - Stafford and Deshaun Watson (assuming he is really available).

Those are the only two passers that move the needle.

Sam Darnold and other guys that were former #1 picks are largely reclamation projects.

If the team wants to add Darnold and give up a #3 pick for him that's fine.

But my guess is the Jets are going to try and needle a late #1 or #2 pick for him and some team like Chicago that traditionally makes lousy decisions at quarterback is likely to pay it.

Aaron Rodgers meets the criteria, but of the 3 he'd be the worst decision.

I'm seeing Derek Carr's name all of a sudden.

Have you guys looked at his stats over the last 4 seasons? They are.... well... surprisingly good.

2017 62.7% completions 3496 yds 22 TDs 13 INTs
2018 68.9% completions 4049 yds 19 TDs 10 INTs
2019 70.4% completions 4054 yds 21 TDs 8 INTs
2020 67.3% completions 4103 yds 27 TDs 9 INTs

He's missed ONE game in 7 years.

I know the Raiders haven't been good over this stretch - but Carr is accurate, productive, and a good decision-maker. I'm suddenly enthused if we could get him for a reasonable price. Those are really, really good numbers.

More and more he's intriguing me. He's going to be 30 when the season starts, so he's not 'old' in terms of QB. I think Jon Gruden never really believed in Carr and thus he's never truly embraced him. Carr was drafted before Gruden got his mega-deal to be the head coach... If I'm remembering correctly, Gruden has notoriously never been content with ANY QB as long as he's ever been a HC. Gannon being the closest...

The best case scenario would be Vegas going all in on Watson and Carr becoming expendable. Vegas picks 17th so I doubt they're getting 'their guy' there. I have a hard time believing they hitch their wagon to Mariota but who knows.

is everyone just dead set on "we need a new QB" here?

I dont see why. We were a few plays away from winning 9-10 games. Taylor and Kyle both deserve the chance to take the reins and lead the team.

I think both of those two have promise, although there are durability questions about both of them, and of course, really there's not enough game tape on them to have a real solid opinion. Kyle looked very capable of running this offense when he was in there. He has had some problems protecting the football (more in Carolina than in DC so far). And of course Heinicke, aside from the one playoff game and late in the season ender, he's a total unknown quantity. I hope both guys get a real chance to earn the starting role.

But it doesn't matter what we think. Rivera is making it pretty clear he and Turner think we need a proven QB. It may not be so much 'we don't believe we can win with either of these guys' as it is 'if you have the chance to get a top tier QB, you make that attempt' kind of thinking going on.

But ultimately, I agree with you that it's not a disaster if we don't bring in a QB from the outside. If they do move on from Smith, we have to add a potential starter though. You can't rely on a guy coming off a major injury and someone you've only had play 1 full game. Gotta add someone competent. I don't know where they stand on Smith - that's a big question mark.

They put Heinicke on the biggest stage this club has had in years and he did not wilt under the lights like some have here in the past..cough..cough...Kirk....

He's the leader in the clubhouse for me if no other Qb is brought in.

I really loved what I saw from him. I might even name him the presumptive starter going into camp if Alexis on the roster but still isn't right and if Kyle Allen is not looking ready. Some guys just have the intangibles - and we saw a real spark from him in the final minutes of the regular season AND throughout the Bucs game. Amazing really.

if we were talking about trading Jonathan Allen for a potential big name I am against it. Jon is an anchor and someone we know is vital to that DL.

Bringing in Watson/Prescott/Stafford is a huge risk. None of them are known to elevate teams like a Brady or Rodgers.

I don't want to give away what we know is working for something that could do something.

I just saw we offered the 19 and a 3rd for Stafford. THAT is an OK trade for me.

I had seen someone mention "Chase Young and 19 to Houston for Watson" and it just pains me.

QBs who are so good they can truly take bad teams and make them immediately relevant aren't unicorns, but it's close. Brady is certainly that guy. Most would argue Rodgers is, although I'm not sure that's the case. Russell Wilson is one of those guys imho.

I don't think finding 'that guy' is necessarily realistic. But I would have to think about the 'Chase Young and 19' offer. It's not as crazy an offer as some might characterize it - only because the impact of a truly gifted QB is so much greater than that of a pass rusher.

It's kind of a moot point though, because I don't even think that would be enough to get Watson. And that's the problem.

I think if we mess with the nucleus of the D we are looking at seeing players who no longer care because the chemistry is gone.

Chase being traded would mean we need to re-sign Kerrigan. He would then have us at whatever price he wanted. There is no pass rusher in the draft that I have seen that can come in and contribute like those two did.

Plus, the intensity and game changing moments Chase offered isn't something that comes along often.

Just my opinion. I think we rely heavily on our D and let the O get us 21-24 per game.

I don't think Kerrigan is a significant piece of this defense long-term going forward regardless. He's closing out his career and his skills are diminished. I started this thread because I don't want some 'mega-deal' of any kind, so I'm already on record thinking giving up big assets would be a mistake. The argument for making the Young/1st rounder deal for Watson is what I've already stated, a top-tier QB trumps a top-tier (even #1) talent at pass rusher, every single time. I also think some would argue that having Sweat even after trading Young would ease a lot of the pain involved. And Ionnadis is our best interior rusher and we didn't even have him last season. We could survive it, perhaps not even have that huge a drop-off.

That's no slam on Young. Anyone with eyes can see what we have in him. And he also appears to be what Kerrigan never has been - a vocal, inspirational leader on D who elevates the play of others around him.

You would still have to think hard about that kind of a deal. But again, the problem is, I guarantee you Houston would want more than that.

Twitter-verse rumor is that the Texans are asking (as a starting point) for 2 firsts, 2 seconds, and 'two defensive starters'. That's far too high a price to pay imho. And why we should stay away from a 'quick fix', especially for a QB who thinks he should have a significant role in GM and head coaching hires, 'or else'....

who do they think Watson is, Herschel Walker?!!

The factor that no one is talking about? It's always dangerous to try and acquire a disgruntled star player whose team doesn't want to part ways with him. By definition, they are going to give you the 'I don't want to sell' price. #AmericanPickers

Supposedly, the Team’s offer was this years first and third. The Rams offer was definitely better for the Lions. It sounds like he was coming to Washington and the Rams wouldn’t give up.

“Both Washington and Carolina had offered their first-round picks and then some. The Panthers’ first-rounder is eighth (that wound up being the highest pick offered) and their proposal came with a later pick. Washington packaged a third-round pick with the 19th pick.”

If Houston is asking that for Watson he'll be in Houston next year or sitting out pouting he didn't get his way.
