Haskins looked decent in his first series.

Then he went all Haskins and stuff after that.
 
On Sims - No. He's only been back from an injury for a couple of games. He was electric towards the end of the 2019 season, and I think he can be again. He is still a very raw player. To be fair the 'drop' everyone keeps talking about would've been a very tough ball for any receiver to get. Yeah - I know it hit his hands, but just barely, and it was low and moving fast. Had he caught it, it would've been the catch of the night.

He's had a rough return since coming off the injury list - I think that's 100% fair. But I still think he's got a bright future. Now Jeremy Sprinkle? You can put his ass on the train out of town right now. I'll even pay for the ticket.

I wanted Dwayne to succeed, but at this point, I just don't trust his decision-making. Not that he did anything awful tonight. But it would take a lot to get me believing in him again. One thing I will say... his passing is sooo fluid and effortless. It hypnotizes you, because it's been a long time (if ever) since we've had a QB who could throw it like he can. But that doesn't mean he'll ever be a starting caliber QB. Would love to be wrong. But I want Alex Smith the rest of the way please...
 
Encouraging to hear that Alex could have come back in the game if needed this evening. It might very well mean we do not have to watch Dwayne throw off his back foot next week. :)
 
I didn't catch the post-game press conference. But I'm hoping Alex was injured early on in the game. Because he looked bad and I'm looking for an excuse to chalk that up to :)

He instills absolutely no confidence. Certainly not in the fan base and very likely not in the coaches and the other players.
 
I saw a moment when the game was still in doubt where he made a big scene of going over to the grass and kneeling in prayer. Is it just me, being non-Christian and cynical as hell, or did that look just staged and phony as hell? Does Jesus really intervene to keep you from throwing picks when your time comes?

That kind of shit is a real turnoff for me.

BTW, after the first drive of the second half, just what the hell went through Scott Turner's head? Why did he get so cute on offense when basic,straight ahead was called for?

Sorry brother, I just don't buy it. He got benched for being lazy and sitting on his laurels at the moment he should've been working the hardest. Going to take a lot for me to believe he's who he puts himself out there to be. I hope he has success at some point. But I don't want to spend another 2 or 3 years as a fan hoping it finally all comes together for him.

If Alex can't return, or goes down again, I hope he lights it up. I just won't be expecting him to.

Yeah... I think Scott Turner is going to be a good OC (and probably a HC within 5 years) but the same creativity that at times makes even our offense hum, sometimes gets the best of him. Then again, he's had 2 guys to run his offense, a 2nd year QB with no real sense of how to run ANY NFL offense, much less his, and a miracle comeback vet who can't run or escape the pocket. Those aren't the best options in either case. I think the most valid criticism at times is his abandoning the run (and emphatically telegraphing it with an empty backfield). Then again, as ST mentioned in chat, if he were pounding the ball 2 out of every 3 plays, we'd be criticizing him for being vanilla and not going downfield - you know that's true. I think when Gibson was out there, you saw Turner a lot more willing to go with a run first offense. I enjoyed the big trick play against the Steelers as much as anyone, but I do think running trick or gimmicky plays in key situations needs to stop. It signals weakness to the opponent and sort of communicates to our own team that the OC doesn't think we can win a straight up battle without trickeration.
 
Haskins came pretty damn close to giving away this game a couple times. He needs to take the emotion down a notch in this presser, like it was some sort of emotional victory. It wasn't. He nearly gave it away. All he had to do was not lose.

I saw Dwayne complete some nice passes when he first came in. That was a nice drive before it sputtered. I also saw him look unsure of what to do when the play wasn't there - while I saw Alex throw it out of bounds 3 or 4 times in the same situation.

We got lucky today. We have a QB that's been benched once for being inaccurate, and with the ball in our hands, 5+ min to go and an 8 point lead we run once, then pass twice. We were flirting with disaster there. The series that started at our 1 yard line was much better.. run twice, then a QUICK pass to the flat to McKissic almost resulted in a first down. The cuteness has to stop though. Our defense was in control for the overwhelming majority of that game. A reverse to Isaiah Wright with the intention to pass? We're driving with Alex Smith, who's struggling to that point and we run empty set on back to back plays? San Fran was ready for it. When we went empty set, you could tell they practiced it. The INT was because the DB KNEW what to look for.

McKissic had 11 carries for 68 yards. That's 6.6+ YPC.

I am rooting hard for Scott Turner but our defense was responsible for 17 points....
 
Absolutely - that's spot on. There are going to be games like today, where neither team can establish control or dominance. And when that happens in the NFL, you know which team wins? The one whose coaches make the better decisions. Today, it was only the dominance of the D in key situations that helped overcome some pretty questionable decisions and wasted opportunities by the coaching staff.

Dwayne can get an Oscar for working the screen.

He would be a natural in the communications major.
 
I didn't watch the full game, but it seems like we won because Shanarat's boy--maybe call him Shanababyrat?--has fallen into mancrush mode with Mullens like his dad did with Grossman and Beck.

He could have just taken it easy before halftime, but he wanted to rub in some points on us instead. Wonderful that backfired.

Hilarious that a rookie is already more decisive and better with decision-making than a supposed vet in Wentz.

I wish Hurts has a good enough career in Philly to make Donovan McNabb completely irrelevant for the sake of posterity.
 
Yeah, I keep trying to ignore all the killer drops and focus on the potential with Sims Jr. It's gotten really difficult to do. Three games left in the audition.

The game wasn't broadcast here so I have no real context for things but when I looked at the boxscore these are the two things that jumped out at me. I don't understand how when your lead back is knocking out 6.6 per touch he only gets 11 carries on a night where you having real QB issues. Honestly, this sort of smacks a bit of another Turner who famously said "what we do works" when it wasn't working.

Quarterback Alex Smith was forced out of Washington Football Team’s 23-15 win over the 49ers due to a leg injury, but x-rays were negative and he appears to have avoided a significant injury to his right leg.
