WASHINGTON ANNOUNCES FRANCHISE WILL BE CALLED “WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM” PENDING ADOPTION OF NEW NAME

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – On July 3rd we announced a thorough review of the team’s name in light of events in the country and feedback from our community. As the process has continued internally, we want to keep our players, alumni, fans, community and sponsors apprised of key developments.

For updated brand clarity and consistency purposes, we will call ourselves the “Washington Football Team” pending adoption of our new name. We encourage fans, media and all other parties to use “Washington Football Team” immediately. The Redskins name and logo will officially be retired by the start of the 2020 season.

In addition, we are rolling out an aesthetic that reflects the direction of the franchise as we progress toward a new name and design scheme.

The decision to use “Washington Football Team” for this season allows the franchise the ability to undertake an in-depth branding process to properly include player, alumni, fan, community, and sponsor input. To date, we have been pleased to see so many people putting forward their vision of what the new name and design should be on their social media channels and we look forward to including their feedback as this process progresses.

Starting tomorrow and over the next 50 days, we will begin the process of retiring all Redskins branding from team properties whether it be FedExField, Redskins Park, other physical and digital spaces. We hope to complete this process in full by the team’s home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 13.

Included in the link below are uniform concepts featuring “Washington Football Team” players: Jonathan Allen, Landon Collins, Dwayne Haskins, Ryan Kerrigan, Daron Payne and Chase Young in their home and road jerseys. The team will debut their home uniforms in their Week 1 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles and away uniforms in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Fans will be able to purchase “Washington Football Team” merchandise from Fanatics and NFL Shop in the coming days.

Full mockups of the logo, uniform concepts and FedExField design can be viewed at redskins.com/washingtonfootball

If there was ever a year to trot out on the field with no name or logo, this would be the one. Pandemic, no fans likely in attendance, the team has the luxury of time right now.

I think this is the right choice.

That all being said, it leaves you ZERO excuses if they botch the rebrand.

The W is corny as can be. Did they just go through all the fonts on Word and pick that one?

Yeah, it's terrible. This is depressing.

I kinda thought they might go Washington FC....but whatever. NOTHING they trot out in this climate was going to satisfy.

Yeah, this is where my thoughts were. This or FC Washington. I also thought FCDC might be cool if approached correctly.

What they have done is...small...for lack of a better word.

I'd prefer that instead of rewarding all those righteous people who've been referring to the 'Washington Football Team' the past 5 years. That's really irksome.
I thought the same thing too.

I get what Ryp is saying, but it’s just as easy to defend the notion that no matter what they are going to be called they are still going to be the same franchise.

It's just pissing in the wind since the decision is made. Doesn't matter what anyone thinks about it. I do think it's unfortunate that they couldn't have worked this out with their sponsors, a change to the new name (TBD) in 2021 to avoid having to use a 'description' for a season. It's really ridiculous to expect them to change the name between now and season's start, and they should have held their ground on that.

Julie Donaldson mentioned they would start changing all of the web stuff over to the 'new name'. Wonder how things are going over on 'Extremewashingtonfootballteamfans.com'?

I need to be able to select more than one emoji for this post. Just saying...

If they go back to Redskins I will do a dance on Facebook live for all the world to see.

I can’t foresee any scenario where that happens, just my sense of things.
