Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

He had 3 additional surgeries for infection from what I've heard.

If Guice had the same dr's that were attending to Alex Smith then our players need to stay the hell away from them. Too many infections going on with our squad.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Starting to like the Martin pick even more now.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

The center pick looks pretty good too. I guess it's been a while sine we had a o-lineman with an unpronouncable name as well.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

the 6th round wr Harmon looks damn good too

I was gonna say, in addition to an orthopedist, the team needs to hire an Infectious Disease Specialist

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Maybe surprisingly to some, that's exactly what Belichick means when he preaches need over BPA:

Chris Simms spent a year working as a coaching assistant with the Patriots in 2012. Next to his desk there was a sign that read: “We're not collecting players. We're building a team.”
“I think that's where it all starts really,” Simms said of the Patriots' approach to building a roster. “New England follows the model a little of brains over brawn. They're not in the ‘we're going to take the best player available' and that crap. That makes no sense. When teams say that, I want to say, ‘OK.' Maybe on occasion once every 20 years, but you have to do what's best for your team going forward, positional fit.”

Our draft now is pretty simple. Belichick would identify that we need WRs and TEs, and go after them. We also need at least one O-lineman. With losing Ty, likely two.

2 WRs
2 OL
1, and by next season, likely 2 TEs.

That's our draft strategy right there. Now find the BPA that fill those specific needs.

Mike Lombardi has said that but Bill has always shied away from needs it seems like

So, what's the difference in the Redskins' war room this year ?
Is Doug getting more input ?
Or is it Kyle Smith ?

I have always felt the 'BPA' religion was a little overzealous. While that idea, that in the long haul you will build the most talented roster by always taking the most gifted athlete regardless of current needs sound good and correct, NFL games aren't played 'in the long haul'. Coaches are hired, given relatively brief tenures to win, and if they don't, teams start over. There is also the aspect of finding guys who can do what you need them to do based on philosophy, scheme, and current roster. FIT may be more important in some ways than base talent level. That's why (in addition to Tom Brady) the Patriots have been so successful with what look like 'plug and play' players. They may not bring in the most talented athletes, but the guys they do bring in fit their system and can perform.

Once Dan and Bruce watched the first round from the war room, they decided not to be involved at all on days two and three. Kyle was the one who formulated the board and ran the draft - with input from Doug, Eric, and Jay.

When the first round turned out to be a masterpiece of patience and diligence from Kyle, Bruce and Dan stayed out of the way. In actuality, Kyle and company ran it from start to finish. Bruce and Dan were simply observers on that first night.

Kyle is excellent at what he does. Ditto for Eric. Doug is very good at player evals and relationships with current players. Doug is also good at establishing relationships with free agents and college prospects. All in all, it could be the best front office setup (on the football side) in more than thirty years.

Sounds very much like Kyle needs a major promotion and raise, before some other team makes him their GM.

I think it's more nuanced than best player v. draft for need. I like the best player available tact overall, but not like Arians was saying the other day, "If I have 3 players at that position, I draft the BPA even if it's that position."

If you have holes in 6 or 7 positions (which we do), I think you automatically take the best player available...the bpa is almost invariably going to fit one of those positions, and in many cases the talent level isn't that far off that you can feel confident you're getting the value you need.

The Giants are a prime example of drafting position of need, not bpa with the 7th pick. With Josh Allen on the board, they took a QB many had slated in the middle to late part of the round, instead of arguably the best edge rusher in the draft. They were just reeling from the decision to pass on their future QB in Sam Darnold, for a RB who will be beaten up by the time they are competitive again, so Gettleman reached for Jones.

When you get into the later rounds, the talent level is even more equal so you can start looking to fill needs. However, when there is a player that slips and is not necessarily a position of need, you snag them for depth. The Bryce Love pick fits that scenario. His talent is far greater than any guard we could have taken there, even though guard is a bigger need and he's coming off a knee injury. We took what appears to be bpa.

Exactly, title one as GM and the other as vice GM or whatever.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

So, "Eric" is Eric Schaeffer, the guy who specializes in contracts.
So, he also is involved in drafting decisions ?
Or is there another Eric, and am I mixed up ?
Who's the guy in the FO that just got fired this past offseason ? I thought his name was Eric,
maybe that's another guy named Eric ?
I get kinda confused about the identity of some of these "Non-High-Profile FO guys".

Are you sure? I have read over and over than one better hit in the first round - has to be someone who at the least will be around for 8-10 years; at best, an all-pro type. This is most definitely a long-term perspective as well as money focused. Sure there are hits and misses....but teams overwhelmingly look a raw physical ability/talent - and then do their homework with interviews, tape review for skills that fit demands of the system (though even here we have had debates about coaching staffs making adjustments for player strengths - something Bellichek is respected for). I will go with Fear and MD5 and concede need matters. We can even find maneuvering room for everyone by accepting that "best available" as a concept isn't restricted to just physical attributes such as dash time, jumping ability, but other factors such as intelligence, maturity, "twitch", etc., etc. The same nuances apply to need - one does not draft just anyone because they fill a need. We know that teams often don't address a need because the draft didn't have the depth or capability needed - especially at the skill positions. We also know that drafting based only on need can be disasterious especialkly in hgh rounds - hello Washington QB draft picks!!

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Belichick drafts on need.

His picks always seem focused on what positions he lost in free agency.

I keep trying to convince someone (!) that all teams do that. But Bellichick has made radical changes - the Pats have gone from a pass happy offense with Randy Moss to a run centric team based on precisely these kinds of free agency moves. The point I'm making is what comes first? The need or the strategy/vision/scheme? Bellichick is much more inventive and flexible than he is given credit for. He dictates need, IMO, not the other way around. He can take a need and create a compensating strengh that deflates the impact of an unaddressed or poorly met need. He and his coaching staffs are famous for that - just like one other coach we are all familiar with.... :)

He has said many times he doesn't understand drafting for need
