Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

He had 3 additional surgeries for infection from what I've heard.

If Guice had the same dr's that were attending to Alex Smith then our players need to stay the hell away from them. Too many infections going on with our squad.

Maybe surprisingly to some, that's exactly what Belichick means when he preaches need over BPA:
Chris Simms spent a year working as a coaching assistant with the Patriots in 2012. Next to his desk there was a sign that read: “We're not collecting players. We're building a team.â€
“I think that's where it all starts really,†Simms said of the Patriots' approach to building a roster. “New England follows the model a little of brains over brawn. They're not in the ‘we're going to take the best player available' and that crap. That makes no sense. When teams say that, I want to say, ‘OK.' Maybe on occasion once every 20 years, but you have to do what's best for your team going forward, positional fit.â€
Our draft now is pretty simple. Belichick would identify that we need WRs and TEs, and go after them. We also need at least one O-lineman. With losing Ty, likely two.
2 WRs
2 OL
1, and by next season, likely 2 TEs.
That's our draft strategy right there. Now find the BPA that fill those specific needs.

Mike Lombardi has said that but Bill has always shied away from needs it seems like

So, what's the difference in the Redskins' war room this year ?
Is Doug getting more input ?
Or is it Kyle Smith ?
Once Dan and Bruce watched the first round from the war room, they decided not to be involved at all on days two and three. Kyle was the one who formulated the board and ran the draft - with input from Doug, Eric, and Jay.
When the first round turned out to be a masterpiece of patience and diligence from Kyle, Bruce and Dan stayed out of the way. In actuality, Kyle and company ran it from start to finish. Bruce and Dan were simply observers on that first night.
Kyle is excellent at what he does. Ditto for Eric. Doug is very good at player evals and relationships with current players. Doug is also good at establishing relationships with free agents and college prospects. All in all, it could be the best front office setup (on the football side) in more than thirty years.

I have always felt the 'BPA' religion was a little overzealous. While that idea, that in the long haul you will build the most talented roster by always taking the most gifted athlete regardless of current needs sound good and correct, NFL games aren't played 'in the long haul'. Coaches are hired, given relatively brief tenures to win, and if they don't, teams start over. There is also the aspect of finding guys who can do what you need them to do based on philosophy, scheme, and current roster. FIT may be more important in some ways than base talent level. That's why (in addition to Tom Brady) the Patriots have been so successful with what look like 'plug and play' players. They may not bring in the most talented athletes, but the guys they do bring in fit their system and can perform.

Sounds very much like Kyle needs a major promotion and raise, before some other team makes him their GM.

Belichick drafts on need.
His picks always seem focused on what positions he lost in free agency.
