This is true, but I think the tie in with McLovin for three seasons in Seattle is more notable, and the squad he fielded. We could do worse...

It's inevitable. Bradley worked with Gruden for a few years, then worked with McClu in Seattle for a few more.

I think Gruden did learn to eat some humble pie after the Barry fiasco.

Jay is an offensive coach whose young career has been exclusively on that side of the ball.

He needed to really rely on Scot and Bruce to give him some input on the hire after Haslett was fired.

But Jay went with the intangibles of his meeting with Barry, ie his energy/enthusiasm, instead of paying attention to his lack of experience as a defensive coordinator and poor prior season in 2008 with the Lions.

It was telling that good organizations in the NFL never seemed to have Barry on a short list of candidates for DC for their own clubs.
 
Williams must have been really desperate to secure a gig, to sign with Cleveland this early.

The Browns don't have a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball and their front office has still not shown that they know what they doing with their #1 and #2 picks.

How this team passed on Carson Wentz and traded down because they thought he wasn't worth a top 5 pick is a real head-scratcher.

So, Corey Coleman is going to help transform their team sooner than a Carson Wentz? :laugh:
 
And now the Browns will go from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Wait two years, they'll switch back.
It doesn't make much sense but maybe it makes no difference, they don't have the guys to play either one.

I think Gregg is still miffed at Snyder for not getting a HC job in Washington. Ever since he left Washington he hasn't stayed anywhere too long. Outside of the three years with the Saints it's only been a year or two at each stop. Maybe there's some personality issues or something. Definitely issues between him and Payton. Maybe it's a conspiracy.

Let's see. Fisher is available. Maybe the Browns FO will replace Jackson with Fisher and get that winning combination that worked so well for the Rams. Actually they probably could double the Browns wins and get as high as 2 which is a winning combination in Cleveland.

Nothing shocking here. They do not list him in the article as interviewing anywhere so maybe he's waiting to see how many phone calls he might get from other teams and will make Washington the last stop. Or the first one, could be the same.

Haslett and his clueless ass switching us... I was hoping Barry would have changed to 4-3... I think that our players would like it better too...
 
If memory serves me, it was Shamahan that made the switch. Then hired a guy who ran a 4-3 for most of his coaching career.

If you look at the Steelers, Ravens and other teams that run an effective 3-4 defense you can say with confidence that the Redskins have never had the personnel in place to run that base scheme.

It all starts with a dominant NT inside. A guy big and strong enough that you simply can't run the ball inside.

With Pittsburgh you then look at the size and speed of their linebackers.

While the Redskins outside linebackers Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith are 3-4 size, on the inside Will Compton, Mason Foster and Su'a Cravens are too small to play the scheme effectively.

Over the years the Steelers have had ILBs like Levon Kirkland and now Lawrence Timmons that are 6'3 and 260-265.

Going back to the speed and athleticism issues, no one in Washington's group has the physical impact that Ryan Shazier has.

He can cover, he can stop the run and make plays side to side, he can blitz effectively.

Then you add in safeties that traditionally have been physical and guys that force turnovers. Certainly, Troy Polamalu was that type of player.

But even coming down from a HOF caliber performer, the Steelers have guys like Mike Mitchell that are just solid two-way players.

Mitchell comes up to force the run but he is also a center fielder in the passing game.

What's funny here is after we spent MILLIONS on other positions, including $10M a year for BOTH starting wide receivers we have, the Redskins brought in Mike Mitchell a couple of years ago when he was a FA from Carolina and refused to sign him to what turned out to be a reasonable deal of 5 years for $25M because that was TOO MUCH money.

$5M a year for a starting safety with experience doesn't sound like way too much money to me.

But these kinds of decisions have allowed the Redskins' defense to atrophy into the clear liability that it now is.

Changing to a 4-3 alignment means little in terms of continuity issues because we have no real 3-4 identity.
 
I couldn’t agree more. With the defense needing such an overhaul it doesn’t matter what scheme we want to run. As it stands we don’t have the right players to run either.

3-4, 4-3, 5-3, 46, Stacked 4, 5-2 monster, it doesn’t matter. You have to have the right personnel to run any of them, especially at the pro level where at some point talent trumps scheme.

I wasn’t opposed to switching to the 3-4 and I honestly wouldn’t care if we kept it. I was concerned that the decision to do so seemed to be based on a bad premise. As I remember Shanahan had watched some Steeler practices or something and decided that if/when he got another HC gig he wanted to run a 3-4. Not exactly solid reasoning.

If we stay with the 3-4 we need a NT, MLBs and at least one S that fit. If we go to a 4-3 we don’t need DTs (we have about 6) but might need a DE and would definitely need a MLB who can tackle and at least one S that fits. Six of one….

Run whatever the new DC feels most comfortable coaching. Then commit to getting the talent. Sounds simple when I write it down like that.
 
it seems teams like the Steelers, Ravens, Patriots, Seahawks and other clubs that have consistently good defenses look to take a DE/DT each year in the draft somewhere between Rounds 1-4.

The Giants under Tom Coughlin used to do the same thing. That's one of the reasons our record against the Giants over the years in the 2000's has not been that great. They have usually had the DL that beats our OL and shuts down our run game and chases the qb.

We need to get into the habit of continually looking for both OL and DL talent in the draft.

Too often we have defaulted to drafting skill players.

Continuing to draft quarterbacks in the middle to late rounds makes sense as if you hit on guys that are capable you can then deal them like the Packers and New England have done.

But running backs, wide receivers are often not value picks high in the draft.

The Patriots almost never take a WR in the first round but find guys like Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan.

Pittsburgh takes skill players high - but damn they don't seem to miss much :laugh:

Bell, Brown, Wheaton, Coates, etc.

Even guys that the Steelers let go in free agency like Mike Wallace end up on other teams for years competing as starters.
 
Brown was a 6th rounder. These teams are successful because they just don't take any player they take players that are going to help the team out. Steelers needed CB a few years ago they took Lb bud depree and then a CB fell in the second round to them. All your successfull GMs take players that fit the team. If a player isn't there they either trade down or punt the pick to next year. Scott is meticulous about the draft. I don't know how big his draft sheet is some have 200 players on it most out of the ron wolf tree use 150 players patriots use 75 player sheets.
