Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

“I just think he’s a young, developing quarterback,” Gruden said on Wednesday, just before hitting the practice field. “He’s had a lot of good plays, he’s thrown for almost 700 yards. It’s not like he’s been a total slap---- out there. Yes, he’s missed some opportunities, but it’s like people expect him to go 30-for-35 with nine touchdowns every week. It doesn’t work that way.

“Playing quarterback is tough in this league—it’s very, very tough. It’ll be tough against the Giants this week, tough against the Browns next week, and the Ravens after that. It’s not easy. We just have to figure out ways to make him more comfortable.”

Yep. Gruden just needs to figure that out. I wonder what could possibly make a struggling QB more comfortable. I know there's a solution out there somewhere ... Gotta be something. :)

Cousins "issues" have as much to do with brain dead play calling by our idiot savants, Loser Gruden, and Wrong Play McVay, as they do with anything else.

Oh, and you don't get Lombardi's for passing yardage.

Ooooh, I think the answer Henry was looking for was "fade route in the end zone".

Sorry Ax!

/Was my exact thought when I read that. Give the guy some help and he'll win us a lot of games. Help make him comfortable back there.

It's hard for me to look at this with your new avatar and not think it's Snyder actually posting.

They say rooting for your team 'in the abstract' is easier than actually doing it in reality. Unless you're a Pats fan every week it's a leap of faith - better toughen up - that's my unsolicited advice.

Well, I agree Jay - 35 attempts would probably help him out...

35 rush attempts per game should be the weekly norm imo. Hell I may get a semi if we hit 25

Last year, Redskins were 6-2 when Cousins had 31 or fewer attempts leaving 3-5 with 32 or more passes. So that would put the carries in that 30 to 35 carry range when having 31 or fewer attempts.

I was surprised to learn that we are 6th in the league in YPC this year.

That might be because our passing game has opened up our running game.

Whatever the reason, I'm glad to see that our ability to run has improved.

Now if we can run a few more times and complete some more of those passes, this offense could be unstoppable.

Yeah, that includes plays like Kirk Cousins scrambling for 8 yards on 4th and 10, which normally wouldn't mean much but when a team has only run the ball 29 times, it tends to push up the average.

Our top RB, Matt Jones, currently averages 4.3 yards a carry, which puts him at 29th amongst RBs. Considering how rarely we run the ball it is not a good sign that our RBs average so little per carry.

Hopefully we DO start feeding the ball more to one of our guys and he is able to get comfortable running the ball and the OL gets comfortable blocking for him, and then we'll see where we are. Ten carries a game isn't gonna do it.

What running game ?

My first thought was that Thompson was propping that average up also. Turns out he's actually dragging it down @ 4.0 a tote. OK - he's only run it six times so not a big deal on the YPC because he (like Jones) doesn't have the carries. Kirk doesn't have the carries either, 3, but Cousins does have more yards (28 to 24). {Not a misprint}

I feel a lot better now. {That is a misprint}

What running game ?

What receivers do after the ball is snapped...

Do you remember all of the stupid stuff we used to read last year?

We can't win at home, can't clinch on the road, RG3, letting go of Alfred Morris was a mistake etc....

Alfred behind that O-line in 2016: 3.5 YPC

Matt Jones behind our crappy line: 4.2 YPC

Man, if we had only kept Alfred.

I'm kinda more concerned with this year's stupid stuff.

Not that I care about Morris anymore, or that anyone has mentiomed him at all, but since his name came up:

Alfred Morris against the Redskins in 2016: 1-0

The Redskins against Morris: 0-1

I'm not sure the case has been made that letting him go was a great idea.

But whatever. It was awesome that we exceeded expectations last year and went on a nice run at the end of the season. Personally, i think it would be great if those types of seasons became the norm and not flukey things that occur once every 5-10 years bracketed by 10+ loss seasons. And when we do become consistent winners whomever our coach is will aboslutely get the benefit of the doubt when we start going through a rough patch. However, while rough patches continue to occur with such frequency that they ... really cant be considered patches, I will continue to question whether or not the coach can stop them.

I am actually not as down on this team as much as most these days. I expect us to win today. However, if we dont, its probably not a rough patch so much as just who we are. We'll see.

Here's what I'm seeing for 2016 so far.

In terms of yards per attempt, the Redskins are at 4.7 - that's the 7th highest average in the league. I agree that fewer attempts is inflating that average. Yards per game and average attempts is where we really suck, 68.5 yards (26th in the NFL), and 29 attempts per game (dead last in the NFL by a longshot - next closest team are the Saints at 35 rushes per game). Compare that with the Patriots who are rushing it 108 times per game (which is an anomaly).

Saying 35 rushes per game should be our norm - that might be an improvement but the truth is, that would still have us tied for dead last in rushing attempts/game. I've been saying for awhile that 'balance' like we had in the 80's is not necessary to win. A pass heavy aerial attack can consistently win and in fact, that's been the trend for the past 10 years. Dominant rushing teams are few and far between. When I say 'it's a passing league' I'm certainly correct. 300 yard games are a dime a dozen now, while they used to be the gold standard for a great QB performance. Kirk routinely puts up 300 yard games, whether we win or lose - and it's usually not predictive of success or failure.

I'm fine with our being a pass heavy team. But you aren't going to win many games when the other team's defense knows they don't have to seriously worry about your run game. That's what Henry has been saying for awhile, and he's right. That doesn't mean that you have to have a top 5 back, or even a top 10 rushing attack to consistently win. That's what McD5 has been preaching for awhile, and he's also right.

But you absolutely, definitively aren't going to win consistently without at least a semblance of a decent rushing attack, one that you commit to and employ in games to the tune of at least 50-60 attempts. Without that balance, defenses are just going to play the pass, load up the defensive backfield, and/or send the house at your QB without fear.

Agree completely Boone. Right now, opposing D Coordinators know they have to worry about Kirk and that's it. Thing is, Kirk played well last week (INT in the end zone aside) and if we'd had anything resembling a rushing game we probably win going away.

Gruden has to get his head put of his ass and realize we need to take a little pressure off Kirk. At this point in time RIGHT NOW, Kirk isn't ready to carry a team all by his lonesome. He needs help.

He did it last year so I understand the thinking that we could pick up where we left off last year. But this year hasn't been last year Kirk thus far.

Gruden needs to adjust.
