I have not seen him hit ANYONE deep...he has hit them around 20 yards and then the receiver goes deep. But I have not seen a ball travel accurately without floating or looking horrible that was deep.

10 interceptions in 10 games. that is not improvement. The only games we have won are where he didn't turn the ball over. But that doesn't seem possible considering the teams now know we don't run for shit and dump the ball short every single down.

I guess I don't see him bouncing back and learning from his mistake. Interception vs Carolina is a perfect example. I do give him credit for winning us games...that second half against TB was good on him. Especially that last drive. I have never had a problem complimenting him when he does well. I also don't have a problem calling a spade a spade. I see a guy who can beat lousy teams...but only at home.

This was the first pick in 4 games, not counting the one against the Pat's that garcon handed them. And didn't he come right back the next series and throw a touchdown strike to DJax? That's not something he was capable of last year. He's done similar things numerous times this year after his or someone else's gaff. That is improvement.

We see what we want to see I suppose. I see a team that can beat bad teams but not good ones. The QB gets more credit than he deserves when the team is successful and more blame than deserved when he doesn't. That's the point I was trying to make with the look at the other QB's who were really mediocre, but in the Hall due to having solid teams around them. Great QB's are made by the teams around them more often than not. Throughout the history of the NFL, only a very few QB's have been truly transcendent, carrying their team on their shoulders. Kirk ain't that guy. But he's shown he can play at a high level. Consistency is only going to come with playing time, if it comes at all.

Great discussion by the way. The back and forth is fun. :)

I still would like someone to show me that my eyes are lying to me. Yeah, we have a younger team, but are we improving? We're only in a divisional race because the division stinks. And, 7-9 might win it.

We're 28th in offense with an offensive minded coach. Our qb is still turning the ball over at an alarming rate. He's got an okay arm, but nothing special. His accuracy is off one game, and on in another. Our running backs are used by committee. We have a rookie who now has a reputation as a fumbler. He was benched once in college for fumbling.

The o-line can't create holes for the running game...the supposed goal of McL is smash mouth running. It ain't working. Again, the pass blocking has improved, but more of a product of Kirk's quick release more than anything.

I'm never confident when we need that 1 or 2 yard pick up on third down regardless of where we are on the field.

Our veteran group of WRs are as inconsistent as any unit on the team.

We are 4-6.

We all know how the defense is playing.

So, can someone point me to specifically where we are getting better and are an up and coming team?

You're eyes aren't lying TR. The team is struggling. But I believe we're finally working to rebuild the correct way with McL. We won 4 games last year. We'll win more this year. I think many are underestimating just how bad this team is talent wise and just how much work/time is required to right the ship. We are improving and it's going to be an incremental progression until we reach the tipping point with our talent. We've started more players since Snyder took over who would barely be backups on other teams than any team in the NFL. Snyder is a fan who wants to win now every single season, never willing to forgo the temptation of the perceived quick fix. If McL can keep him at bay for a few years, I believe this team will be in a very different place.

We don't count those now? It seems like stats go as you guys want them to. But when someone said "Griffin is getting blasted on the line and has no chance to get rid of the ball" or "Morris is getting hit in the backfield and has no chance to start" its an excuse. Well, ok. But it seems like if someone throws the ball that regardless of if its tipped in the air its still on the QB. But, I will concede this because its just argumentative. Besides, he threw 2 against the Jets so he made up for that ;)

People were so ready to sign him to a long term deal I saw numbers like 10 mil per and it was like nobody thought twice of it. I know not everyone was in that line of thinking but it sure was pretty popular after the Saints game. But if you take out the Saints game and look at the rest he has had one half of great football. The rest of the time hes been asked to throw it damn near 40 times and that isn't who he is.

Perhaps more of this lies on Gruden than on Cousins. He is doing what he can but it seems like we are asking him to step out of his wheelhouse of skills. He isn't the guy who is going to make defenses play off and he isn't the guy who should be asked to throw it 40 times a game.

It count's but goes right to my point on stats. Have to have context. He didn't commit a pick that was his fault through 3 games. When the discussion is whether or not he is improving, that is an appropriate distinction. I still think we should and will sign him to a 3 year deal. He's capable as a stop gap and there is nothing immediately better on the horizon that I'd be interested in. McL may see it differently of course. :) He had throws to Djax in successive games that will back off defenses. Those weren't 5 yard tosses, they were strikes. Goes to my point that we are talent poor and need a lot of help in that regard. A QB does not have to put 60 yds of air under a ball to back of defenses.

Don't forget the pantyhose...

Should be crystal clear now, that the Skins game vs Carolina game, is more of a game where you gotta credit Carolina's defense, than you blame Cousins, Gruden, or the rest of the offense.
Their defense is a ferocious, turnover-guzzling machine.
When they're not intercepting, they going for the strip of the ball, on every single play, and at least making the tackle.
A far cry from our defense, which struggles just to wrap up a player.
Problem with the Skins' defense, as has been for a long time, is they're more concerned with making a "highlight hit", than they are, with wrapping up the tackle, or forcing a turnover.

Well, they certainly get some credit, but you don't give up INT's if you are safe with the ball. But they are definitely the better team and appear to be the real deal.

Thank you for stating this. I would agree. We need to take the long view here.

There is something to me that seems improved at the QB position over past years. The problem is that Kirk doesn't have all of the pieces around him (including a consistent D) to really take this team to the next level.

Do I think Kirk will be a top 10 QB? Who knows - but he seems mentally stronger than he's ever been and he's been fantastic in 2-3 games this season where he more or less put the team on his back.

With all the other holes needed to stock a talent-depleted roster in the next two offseasons, I think we should roll with Kirk and see how we do.

dayum!

well...that post leads me in only one direction: our offense as presently manned cannot compete against the better defenses. we need to get rid of the whole lot of em and find entirely new players who can compete!

snark aside......and with apologies......these sorts of thoughts always seem like rationalizations to me to protect poor coaching, woeful execution and lack of focus. these cats are professionals. the bar should be set to at least expecting something better than embarrassing.

Right...which plays right into the idea that we could have had the best defensive coordinator in the past 25 years and chose Joe Barry. Our boy McL responsible for that? Or are you blaming Gruden?

I think Cousins' biggest issue is his arm strength.
Not that he can't throw a ball long, but it's his velocity.
If he had more zip on the ball, get could get it into those tight places, and not throw as many interceptions.
His balls just seem to hang there too long.

In consecutive home games, Cousins throws a deep ball to Jackson. Can we put to rest the notion Cousins can't throw the deep ball? Looks like when WR gets open deep, Cousins can get them the ball.

Nice game by Kirk after an almost disastrous start. Beautiful strike to Djax.
