Change of Thought: Let Orakpo Go

Rob Jackson once locked down Randy Moss in his prime.

Rob Jackson was born in a log cabin he built.

If Rob Jackson covered a receiver at the same time Chuck Norris roundhouse kicked him, a black hole would be created, killing everything instantly.

The grass is always greener on the other side, unless Rob Jackson was covering you, then you never made it to the grass.

Rob Jackson's press coverage has been deemed a lethal weapon by the justice department.

QBs only complete passes when Rob Jackson allows it.

Rob Jackson once intercepted a pass, then handed it to the receiver so he could tackle him, force a fumble, and return it for a TD.

I think you're taking the idea that rob jackason is possibly a suitable, short term option after orakpo leaves and turning into him being significantly better than orakpo, in addition to the idea that orakpo is significantly good to begin with.

orakpo hasn't been a meaningful impact player very often over the last 4 years. he's had moments, but that's it. the fact that some of us would take a season with rob jackson says more about orakpo than it does rob jackson.

honestly it sounds like 99.9% of the forum agrees it would be nice to have orakpo back, but for a reasonable price. the only real difference is what that reasonable price is, and it looks like the difference between the two sides isn't very big at all.

franchising seems to present a ton of different ideas though.

Just having a little fun, is all.

I happen to disagree that Rob Jackson is even in the same ball park as Orakpo, but that's been hashed out over and over. To me, the comment that Orakpo hasn't been an impact player is a silly one. Rob Jackson did score a defensive TD in that one game that one time though via interception, so I guess he's infinitely better in coverage. :(

Bottom line: if we lose Orakpo, the defense gets significantly worse, instantly.

rob jackson made more meaningful impact plays last year than orakpo has in 4.

Given a second season to prep, Jenkins could be a better player than Jackson anyway. I don't think Neo was pointing to Jackson as "the" replacement, only that our defense performed it's best in the last 5 years without Orakpo.

no one has on the defense - even Kerrigan. they lose.

our defense started the first set of games this season with TD's in the first half. some of them the first scores of the games.

they made plenty of plays last year. i'm not suggesting they were an all pro defense but they did pretty well and contributed to that run.

they made plays the last seven games - and struggled to put away horrendous teams like Philly into the second half just the same. I believe the points per game allowed has been reviewed and was adequate. we won basically because the offense was unstoppable.

Aaaand.....as we all know, defensive performance is dramatically effected by offensive performance....and vice versa. The game of football is as much a game of field position and opportunity as anything - and so both offense and defense live or die hand in hand. That, in my view, is where we went horribly wrong last season. When one side played well, the other didn't. When one set the other up, the other couldn't capitalize.

So, in summary....(as I re-read what I just wrote).......we lost games because we didn't play well on offense or defense.

There! Got that, everybody?? Man....it's so clear to me now!! :rolleyes2::idea:

"Meaningful impact plays?" Maybe. I don't know your criteria. I'm not sure I have a criteria myself. But Rak has more impact on any given play on a regular basis. Jackson disappeared for long stretches, while Orakpo was getting QB pressures every week. It's not all about the sack, or the interception, it's about flustering the QB into a poor decision.

meaningful impact plays = impact plays when it matters. when the game/season is on the line. when the lights are their brightest. etc.

i don't have much desire for the guy that shows up when it doesn't matter.

You're giving impossible standards for Rak to live up to.

It seems to me that you (and the rest of the Jackson fans) are basing this all on Jackson's interception at the end of 2012, and maybe his diving pick-6 against Cincy (a game we lost, btw). I think that's typical Redskins fan behavior... idolizing sub-par players based on one or two great moments.

Again - you're taking your high opinion of orakpo and inferring that i have a higher opinion of jackson. Instead try to think of it this way - I have a decent opinion of jackson and a lower opinion of orakpo based on what i've seen. i'm also centering my opinion on the two around their associated costs.

I would agree that orakpo has way more potential than jackson. but it's just that - potential. and after 4 years the probability of him realizing it is going down in my book. and at a high price... what's the odds on the different levels for rate of return? i think they're diminishing.

i do find irony that the guy that's been championing orakpo is criticisng me for idolizing sub-par players based on a few great moments ;)

That's where we disagree... Orakpo was the best player on D last season, and it wasn't close. Now, one could argue the entire D was sub par, but Orakpo was still the cream of a mediocre crop. You don't just let your best player walk, when the entire D lacks talent IMO.

Tell that to Houston when they let Mario walk. They understood he didn't fit their scheme and were willing to simply let go. They were one of the best defenses the following season and they weren't a great defense with him until Wade came along.

They also drafted a young man named JJ Watt in 2011 that helped them on D quite a bit.

They also had a lot of other pieces in place; Cushing, Barwin, Ryans, Smith, and an outstanding secondary. They could afford to lose Mario, because the rest of the team could pick up the slack.

You may be right, the best strategy may be to move on from Rak. I just don't think they're in any position to do so at this juncture.

How do you figure? The defense was visibly better with Rak out with injury then with Rak in there. I am not arguing that Jackson is better than Rak but our defense performed better with Jackson in the last 7 games of '12 then it did all of '13 with Rak in there.

Fletcher. He played at his normal level the second half of 2012, but never got there in 2013.

Rumors also swirled that the reigns were taken off Haz in the second half of '12.

Either way, the improvement on D had nothing to do with Rak being on the field, and nothing to do with the fact that he was our best player on D in 2013.
