2014 Coaching Search Rumors

The lesson here is that he won't let his owner bully him into drafting someone he doesn't want? I'm all for that. Plus, like Wilson, Kaep benefits from an all-around stronger team in addition too an all-universe TE. If you put a gun to my head right now I'd probably take him over Andy, but its very close. Kaep had some stinkers this year.

I'm not the biggest fan of his, but Dalton threw for almost 4300 yards and 33 TDs this year...if Griffin sniffed 4000 and 30 we'd all collectively wet ourselves.

I found a couple of similar reports about Gruden talking Brown into drafting Dalton over Kaepernick which did raise one question in my mind.

Gruden preferred Dalton because he fit Gruden's scheme better but which QB is more similar to Griffin in playing style? What might this mean vis-a-vis how Gruden would approach utilizing Griffin in his system?

Also, how would the "hard nosed" approach Gruden has interact with Griffin's seeming stubbornness about how he wants to be used?

Like I said, I'm looking for potential upsides and downsides here.

Dalton's hardly been a failed pick though. The only real legitimate beef one could have with his performance in 3 years is he hasn't gotten it done in post-season play. I'm not sure many talent evaluators viewed Kaepernick as an all-world, can't miss prospect in that draft. Everything is always crystal clear in hindsight...

On the question about whether Griffin can work well with a 'hard nosed' coach - it's difficult to know without really knowing what transpired with the Shanahans. What I find strange is that the same folks who think the Shanahans were awful coaches and human beings have a problem with Griffin possibly having had a problem with them. That's just illogical.

Both QBs fell to the 2nd round for a reason (although ironically both should have gone before Ponder & Locker). The Bengals had just drafted AJ Green, so they wanted a more traditional pocket-passing type QB, which was Andy Dalton. I like that Gruden had a vision and executed it, without kowtowing to the powers that be. That's what we need here - also someone who can tell Griffin to shut it when necessary.

Just to be clear, I'm not making any statement or raising any questions about the effectiveness of or comparative abilities of Dalton versus Kaepernick just a question of how well Gruden and Griffin might mesh in terms of system/skills/personalities and how that may play out in the Redskins near-term future.

Bellichick or George Allen couldn't coax consistent quality football out of this defense, the talent simply isn't there.

When you look at the team as a whole the thing that stands out most is how mediocre both lines are.

We have 5 starting offensive linemen and 3 starting defensive linemen and only one has made a pro bowl in 4 years.

In 4 years we only drafted two defensive linemen and one, Neild, was a 7th rounder.

On offense we drafted several linemen, but outside of consensus #1 pick Trent Williams none of the others has really challenged for a starting job.

Dropping my 100% confident it's Jay Gruden down to 98%.

It seems he's scheduled to interview with Tennessee before us, and they're likely to throw the kitchen sink at him.

I just don't see what makes Gruden special. To me Bevell has a more impressive resume and Roman is supposed to be the best teacher of the bunch on offense.

Tennessee is a hard place to win.

Not a high profile market and the owners have been cheap over the years.

Also you have no qb in a conference with Luck, Manning, Brady, Rivers and Roethlisberger.

He's the guy I want and that's why I'm confident he'll never be coach of the Washington Redskins. Twitter is abuzz that he's already touring the Titans facilities.

I'm fine with doing our 'due diligence' but we're going to drag this out and find ourselves hiring the 'best coach available' from a list that's getting smaller by the day.

That actually would speak very highly of Jay-G's character, if he's indeed only 2% affected by a "kitchen-sink" contract offer.

EDIT : I am officially copyrighting the nick-name Jay-G, as I'm the first to use it, so it's official now...... so for once someone doesn't steal credit for one of my brilliant ideas

We have a bigger sink :)

So, you're saying we should just pull the trigger on Gruden when he steps on the property ? I understand your point about the list of available coaches getting smaller, but should we just jump at him to keep somebody else from getting him first ? I think we've been doing some of the interviews just to bide time and get some feedback on the organization from outsiders while waiting for Gruden to become available. He's the # 1 prospect for a HC job, and that actually worries me a bit. Last time we went with the hottest prospect for a HC job it didn't work. I'm not saying Gruden will or won't work out one way or the other. I won'r bitch if he's our next coach, but does any of the other we expect to interview actually fit better ?

There may be other reasons, however, in which trying to look at too many potential HC candidates may cause problems.

Should the Redskins wait for a coach still in the playoffs?
January 6, 2014 in Redskins Personnel, Washington Redskins

With the Bengals and Packers losses on Sunday in the Wild Card Round, their assistants are now free to both interview and be hired by perspective teams. Other coaches from teams moving on can interview in their home city at the playoff team's convenience, but any follow up interview and hiring can't take place until after the team is eliminated from the postseason. Coaches from teams on a bye could have been interviewed this past week in their home city, but now restrictions on a 2nd interview and hiring them are in place. The Redskins now have to decide if they want to hire a coach who is free to sign now, or should they wait until the whole field is available?

The Redskins have already interviewed Carolina DC Sean McDermott and Seattle OC Darrell Bevell and will have to wait at least one more week to hire either one of them. With the 49ers and Chargers advancing, the Redskins could interview Greg Roman the 49ers offensive coordinator and Ken Whisenhunt the Chargers offensive coordinator, but would have to wait for them to lose to hire them.

The Redskins have already interviewed or are set to interview Jim Caldwell the Ravens offensive coordinator, Perry Fewell the Giants defensive coordinator, Rich Bisaccia the Cowboys special teams coach and have requested an interview with Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin. Also now that the Bengals are eliminated from the postseason the Redskins have requested interviews with OC Jay Gruden and DC Mike Zimmer. While there hasn't been any mention yet, the Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub and Packers offensive coordinator Tom Clements could both garner attention as well.

Other coaches could get on the short list, both from coaches eliminated from the postseason (Todd Bowles, Ray Horton) and coaches still in the mix (Dan Quinn, Adam Gase), the Redskins need to figure out if anyone separates themselves from the pack and if that guy is still in the playoffs is it worth waiting to hire him.

Since the Redskins have so many interviews yet to go waiting another week isn't a bad thing, but if a team is Super Bowl bound, then the Redskins can't get a coach and staff hired until early February. That is after the Senior Bowl and other college All-star games and less than three weeks before the NFL Scouting Combine. Not only would it mean that your coaching staff can't help scout down in Mobile for the Senior Bowl, but it also puts your scouting department at a disadvantage. If the Redskins change their philosophy on offense or defense, it changes the way scouts look at players. If you are are going to be a 4-3 team, you are going to focus in on players that you might have otherwise ignored (not completely, but to the point that you aren't as knowledgeable on) and vice-versa. The same is true with the type of offensive linemen you are looking for as well as particular traits in certain players. If the Redskins plan on playing a certain type of coverage scheme, certain corners and safeties should be valued higher than others.

So while it might be great to get a top assistant from a Super Bowl team, it can hinder your ability to prepare for the offseason. Not only does that apply to the draft, but it can also apply to free agency and who to retain from the current roster. You have to identify what type of free agents the Redskins should pursue, and you have to be prepared two months before the draft, while you are cramming for that as well. The Redskins free agency game plan could be completely different depending on who the new head coach is and how he structures his staff. Not only will their be differences from a scheme stand point, but from an individual player standpoint. If Darrell Bevell becomes the head coach a WR like the Seahawks Golden Tate could be a top target for the Redskins, where he might not be on the top 10 WR list for a different staff. And this just isn't just involving the head coach, this could apply to coordinators and assistants as well. In addition to forming a free agency plan from other teams, a different staff could view the Redskins current roster and free agents differently.

The Redskins have a high number of free agents (which is why they have so much money to spend) and they also have a short list of players likely to get the ax. Who is retained and who is let go will be largely determined by the staff that is in place. If you hire a staff in the next 10 days, they will have an extra couple of weeks to figure out who is worth retaining or re-signing. Another thing to remember is that even if the Redskins get their new coach hired by Feb. 3rd (the Monday following the Super Bowl), it could take another 5-10 days to fill out the rest of the coaching staff. That time is important because there is so much a new staff will need to do before major events like the Combine, Free Agency Period and NFL Draft.

Now that's not to say that it should be a deal breaker if the Redskins need to wait for a coach, but it does need to be a factor in the decision making. If Greg Roman is the Redskins top choice, but Mike Zimmer is a close second then it could be worth going with Zimmer to get a leg up. Of course the Redskins don't know yet what coaches will be free to hire in the next two weeks, as opposed to waiting till after the Super Bowl, but the Redskins need to weigh all the scenarios.

:(. Tennessee is the only team I"ve been concerned about over the last three weeks.

No - that's not really what I'm saying. We've had reportedly 6-7 weeks of knowledge that we were moving on from the Shanahans. That's a lot of time to research who's out there, who you want to target and know who the frontrunners are going to be. Maybe that all happened and we are seeing the fruits of that effort now. But to me, it feels kind of random and fluid. I don't want them to rush into anything, but the reality is, there are only so many really good candidates out there, and I fear DC is not at the top of the list for most candidates, which makes dragging out a coaching search more problematic, as you're giving other teams the upper hand in selling their opportunities as being the more attractive.

Truthfully, if Allen knows who his top 3 potential HCs are, I would've preferred he just go hot and heavy after them as quickly as possible and save the other dozen or so :)

As for the 'hottest prospect', I think there's a difference between going after the strongest candidates and a 'big name'. Gruden is not a big name and wouldn't be a 'flashy hire' in my book. He's a long-term coordinator with a proven track record. That's why so much keen interest is being shown in him.

Maybe it will all work out. We'll see.

Feeeeeew... :) Ya had me worried for a minute. It didn't strike me as a stance you would take. Again, maybe two of our top 3 choices are employed by Cincy, and we had no choice but wait. Like you said, we'll see.

Here we go.....best news I've had in a really crappy day.

Rich Tandler reporting that Jay Gruden has finished with his Tennessee interview, without signing a contract.

He is on his way to Ashburn Wednesday morning.

Detroit seems like the more logical choice for Gruden, IMO. Everything is an upgrade - Bush is an upgrade over Bernard as a pass-catching back. Stafford is an upgrade over Dalton as a pocket-passer. Megatron is an upgrade over everyone. Not really sure how their OLs compare, but I think Detroit compares favorably in that department to a lot of teams.

DC is a much bigger mess than Detroit, despite their record. I guess it will depend on if Gruden wants a challenge, or he wants a better chance at success.
