Something to think about, when looking at a new head coach

I guess the only similarity I can find is, we need to upgrade both lines.

A RT for the oline, at minimum. Preferably, a RG too.

If we could get a dominant NT, our defense would improve dramatically, IMO. It would allow us to add Cofield to the DE rotation more often. Assuming Bowen comes back healthy, and Jarvis can turn his "Looking like a bust" back into "promising", and Carriker can come back and play a full season.

I know, NT's don't grow on trees. If's and but's.

Shanahan in my mind has run out of time here.

Yes, compared to Zorn and Cerrato he looks professional but we need better than a one step ahead one step back process where after 4 years we are still in last place.

It seems clear we flubbed on a number of personnel moves in 2010 and 2011, largely IMO because we didn't have a savvy GM to evaluate this roster and provide a counterbalance to Shanahan doing everything by himself.

The trade for Griffin in 2012 was a very risky move. The compensation was more than the Giants gave up for Manning or the Broncos gave up for Elway.

Indy took Luck with their own pick. Miami took Tannehill with their own pick. Seattle took Wilson with their own pick.

Only Washington and Cleveland seemed to be trying to outrace each other to acquire the 2nd overall pick at that high of a price.

Our offense is in just as much shambles as our defense

Skins have the #1 rushing offense, and the #7 overall offense. That is better than New England, Seattle, San Francisco and one spot behind New Orleans.

Not even the same zip code.

It doesn't matter what the rankings are, if you can't hardly punch the ball into the end zone.
Offensive rankings don't win ball games.

I'm not saying the offense is perfect and doesn't have some problems, but to say its as dysfunctional as a defense that can barely tackle is quite a stretch.

Catching the ball, is just as much a fundamental, as tackling.
Have you noticed the insane amount of catchable balls that have been dropped lately ?
We can't catch on offense.
Can't tackle on defense.
Sounds like they're pretty much competing evenly with each other.

Statistics like that are for losers. I remember Norv's offenses here ranking fairly high during seasons we finished at or below .500.

The keys on offense are:

Turnovers
Lack of consistent production on third down
Being on pace for 50 sacks allowed

Those are the stats that are showing where this offense is failing.

And those numbers on the ground because of Griffin running cover the fact that for the past two and a half games Morris has not been as productive as earlier in the season.

I never mentioned the rankings. They are a factor, but they don't tell the whole story. It's much easier for me to see it like this.

Offense - If we could pass block, consistently, we would damn near be unstoppable. Everything else would fall into place.

Defense - If our CB's could cover, and our safetys could cover, and our LB's could cover, and our Dline could penetrate, and we could get pressure on opposing QB's without blitzing, and ANYBODY could just guess 4 of the letters needed to spell "tackle", we'd be awesome.

Easy, huh?

First of all, those 10 super bowls were won by 6 coaches, while the other 6 were one time winners so 6 retread coaches won SB's and 6 first time coaches won SB's too.

They are not retread coaches, if they won it with the same team, they won it with before.
If anything, the fact that those coaches won multiple times, proves my point even more.

The irony is that one of the few times we hired a guy without prior head coaching experience we won 3 Super Bowls.

And the clear difference between Gibbs and let's say Jim Zorn is WHO was doing the picking.

Bobby Beathard vs. Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato.

Uh, there are MANY clear differences between Jim Zorn and Joe Gibbs, not just who hired them.

Overall I'm feeling pretty good about the offense. No doubt, it's missing some parts a really nice Right Tackle and Guard upgrade would be 1 free agent 1 with our first couple picks. This offense has Griffin,Morris, Helu and Young in the backfield. That's pretty darn stout actually....especially with Cousins as an insurance policy. I hope the Redskins look to trade Cousins in the off season. The last time the Skins had two qb's on the roster and I was good with both is back in the hobble Kilmer out onto the field and wobble Jurgensen out...that was good stuff as a fan. I'm not suggesting a 2 qb gameplan. I'm just saying we have two quality qbs on the roster. For soo long we had none.... I trust you guys haven't forgotten how pitiful this team has been regarding a franchise qb on the roster before he was a castaway from other teams. I remember being especially frustrated in the Superbowl with the Bucs and the Raiders. Each team was led by Qbs we let go.
So someone needs to come on board that can develop a qb. ..Shanny and son have neither the trust or apparent direction to meet those requirements. I believe there to be a lot of up coming coaches that would like to hang a shingle with our offense. Griffin is "special, already in the top 5 qb's for the teams history" barring injury. Garcon and Reed complete the set. Upgrading our Oline on the right side doesn't require much effort. I'm 52 over weight have some arthritis issues lost more than a step....:ciao: more like several but I could block as well as our right side ever so often. At least I could get in the way and holler look out!!!! I'd be the first one to offer my hand for help up as well.
Our defense is god awful.....they have very little redeeming qualities, I have no idea how you could compare the two units.

I can't say the offense doesn't have issues but this defense is epically bad. We are 31st out of 32 teams in scoring defense, allowing just over 30 points a game. If we were merely average on defense this team would have 2 more wins, be 5-7 and tied with NY, be two games out of first in the division while 4 to play and 2 of those 4 being in the division. That is very different from where we are even if it doesn't look like it is.

Exactly!

This lost season lies at the feet of the defense. Which, by proxy, is at the feet of Shammy. He is 100% responsible for the makeup and direction of it.
I believe we will have to luck into fixing it, as I don't see him admitting his arrogance when it comes to being a complete failure at evaluating defensive schemes and talent.

But as I have said repeatedly, he will skirt ownership of the disaster if he's fired this offseason.

And that depresses the hell out of me.

The only mild surprise to me is that there is any real diffence of opinion over which side of the ball is worse and the bigger albatross. Understanding full well that one is impacted by the other, to my eye the numbers in 2013 really do shine a bright light on this depressing question.

The offense scores 22.4 points per game. 19th in the league. Not great, but not awful either.

Defensively we give up 30.2 per game. Only Minnesota (30.5) is worse.

The top 10 defenses all give up 21.8 or less (7 of them surrender less than 20). Not surprisingly, if the season ended today all 10 are in the playoffs.

Offensively, Denver, at 38.7 per game, is an outlier. The next best scoring offense is Seattle at 28.3.

The Redskins are 6 points per game behind Seattle offensively.

There are no real outliers defensively--Carolina (13.1) and Seatle (15.5) lead the way.

The Redskins are 17 points per game off the standard set by the defensive scoring leaders.

Not even a question to me where the real issue is.

True except for the fact that the poor offensive line can lead to injuries and a shortened career for your quarterback and running back.

Both Griffin and Morris have taken wicked shots on the field.

Morris gains yards not because the line is so good off the ball but because he can break tackles.

That is the fact that puts the lie to the idea this OL of undersized, supposedly quicker linemen is the key to being successful offensively.

Not to mention the Redskins have lead the league in rushing for most of the season, haven't they? That's just incredible to me. Especially given that we've behind on points so often where you'd think we'd be 100% pass happy. And ironic given how frequently fans state we don't run enough.
