WUSA: The Redskins Real Problem: Their Wide Receivcers

Take a look at the number of 3rd down drops we had...you'll be surprised.

No, I remember most as if they were burned into my psyche! ;)

Mike is right. I wear reading glasses - getting old does that to you.

No, Gordon is not a Calvin Johnson, but he is still better than any receiver in the upcoming draft and has a great skillset. He is a first round talent and then some. Too, he is in his second season.

Might be a moot point though - Browns have been saying over the last couple of days that he is no longer being considered for a trade.

I must admit, Griff and Gordon together might be interesting.
Assuming of course, that Griff has enough influence on Gordon to allow a good locker room fit

Edit, but there is that Fred Davis/suspension/headcase/can he get his stuff together feel about him.

Oh my gosh!! A rookie is being compared to calvin Johnson without having accomplished ****?!!

Seriously, hes been suspended already and is not even thru his first season. Even Brandon Marshall has had to prove himself.

Great vision? More like fogged up goggles.

It's not a big deal, you don't know who he is. Very few Skins fans do. You missed his entire first season--it was a big one.

He accomplished much more in his first season than Joshua Morgan has in any season. And he's in his sixth year.

Do Skins fans know that Josh Morgan only averages 450 yards a year? He only has 11 career TDs in 6 seasons. 11 total in his sixth year!

Josh Gordon already has 7, and he's just started his second year. And that's with an awful QB. He went for 805 yards as a rookie. The two players aren't even in the same galaxy.

Now if after seeing those numbers, if you still think he hasn't accomplished anything, then you must think that Josh Morgan really sucks.

Aside from his 4.4 speed, and his huge frame, the most impressive thing about him is his football IQ. He plays well beyond his years.

He sits down in zones like five year vets. He knows every route, and covers the entire field. He blocks. His YAC is incredible. And he catches terribly thrown jump balls. Rookies don't do that stuff....not like him.

Most scouts and analysts compare him to Andre Johnson. He reminds me a little more of a combination between Pierre Garcon and a legendary WR with the initials of JR, in the way that he moves.

Oh, and for the record? He was better as a rookie than Calvin Johnson was. More yards and more touchdowns.

Everyone feast your football eyes below, and as you watch his rookie highlights, keep telling yourselves that he was a rookie with a terrible QB. He's pretty amazing.

That's easily the least impressive highlight reel I've ever seen. He looks fast, I'll give him that. But he appears to go to the ground like a sack of potatoes on first contact 99% of the time. That is not impressive. That's like Clinton Portis his last 2 seasons. Combine that with the head case factor, and it's a no for me. People with issues almost never resolve those issues. And I feel sorry for any team who does sign him to a huge deal, because with more money will come more problems.

He's on a rookie deal. Currently $5.3 million over four seasons in total.

And he carries multiple defenders down the field several times in that clip.

And after his rookie deal is over? You don't think some desperate team will overpay for him?

He's got break away speed, but in that video, I only saw 2 or 3 catches where a defender was within arms reach of him. The majority of his highlights come when he's catching the ball all alone... Put that video next to a video of Aldrick Robinson's highlights from last year and they will appear similar. I'm sorry if you don't want to hear that but I haven't seen anything to show me he's a top 10 talent in this league. Maybe I'm wrong and completely missing this.... I don't know.

did Matt Millen start this thread?

Lol. It's really pretty simple. I'll do this Oldfan style.

Fact: The league is now a passing league. More than ever before, teams need to be able to throw to compete.

Belief: We are "behind the curve" with receivers, and therefore, cannot expect to compete with the better teams.

Solution: Spend next year's 2nd on OL. Spend next year's 3rd on a safety. That's fine. But when that 4th comes up, we had better be looking at a WR, or get another Garcon through FA, or we will be severely hurting our chances to win consistently.

Silent Threat, Aldrick Robinson is listed at 5'10, 181 pounds.

Josh Gordon is listed at 6'3, 225 pounds.

Robinson went for 237 yards and 3 TDs with a great QB in his rookie season. He only knows a few routes.

Josh Gordon went for 805 yards and 5 TDs with an awful QB in his rookie season. He runs a ton of routes.

I don't see any comparison--unless you mean that both can fly.

I mention them because they are on tv right now, aren't even elite, but still come up huge. We don't spend high draft picks on WRs in a passing league. That's a huge problem.

They come up huge? The Giants are 0-6. That's the opposite of huge.

If you mean they put up good numbers, then sure. But then pointing out an 0-6 team with three great WRs completely contradicts the entire point you're trying to make. Awesome WRs don't mean a thing if you don't have a team around them.

WR is not our weak spot. We have a solid #1, an emerging #2 and a decent slot guy. We just spent a 3rd rounder on our TE and he's emerging as a solid player as well. Yes, we could be better there. It would be awesome to have another 1000 yard WR to go opposite the 1300 yards Garcon is on pace for. But that's a luxury when your team is terrible on defense, has a QB with the jitters and an OL that can't block.

Just ask the Giants.

McD, personally I don't think the difference between us being 1-3 and, say 3-1 is our WR play. Most of it has to do with Griff's recovery being slower than everyone thought it would be. Gun to my head, if you forced me to choose one position that would have made a big difference in our slow start, I'd probably go with either RT or Safety. WR would be pretty low on that list, honestly.

Aldrick Robinson has 1 catch for 13 yards this season, and no TDs.

That's the opposite of huge.

You don't think that's a serious problem in a passing league?

Joshua Morgan has 11 career TDs in 6 seasons. That doesn't sound off alarms?

Aldrick Robinson is our fifth WR.

Let's look at those awesome Giants you think we are not like and apparently should be like. A team that you have claimed has a WR corps that comes up huge. Who is their fifth WR?

Some dude named Louis Murphy. The Giants are his third team in his fifth year. Seven TDs in that five year career. This year he has one catch for 8 yards.

Morgan is our fourth WR. His counterpart on the Giants?

Jerrel Jernigan. Third year in the league. 0 career TDs. 3 catches for 18 yards this year.

Are you under the impression that most teams in this league go five deep at WR?

122 Receptions, 1,964 Receiving Yards, 5 TD, with a top 10 QB.

Calvin Johnson last season. Lions? 4-12. Point moot McD.

Oh, and those 1,964 receiving yards? That was an NFL record. I get the point you're trying to make, but the numbers don't back your point.

Here's recent history. For the past 10 SB winners, here is a recap of their top receiver for the season........

2012 Ravens: Anquan Boldin - not top 10 in any category
2011 Giants: Victor Cruz - career year
2010 Packers: Greg Jennings - top 5 year
2009 Saints: Marques Colston - 10th in TD, not top 10 in anything else with a future HOF QB
2008 Steelers: Hines Ward, not top 10 in any category with a future HOF QB
2007 Giants: Plaxico Burress 4th in TD, not top 10 in anything else with a likely HOF QB
2006 Colts: Marvin Harrison, career year , beast in every category
2005 Steelers: Hines Ward 3rd in TD, not top 10 in anything else with a future HOF QB
2004 Patriots: David Givens, not top 10 in any category with a future HOF QB
2003 Patriots: Deion Branch, not top 10 in any category with a future HOF QB

As you can see, it is a rare exception that the SB winner has had an elite receiver. And most of these teams were lead by a future HOF QB.

Didnt say Robinson was an equivalent, just said the eyeball test didnt exactly knock my socks off... This conversation went from how you feel our WR staff is our biggest liability, to a Josh Gordon love-fest... Gordon would be a good piece to add to the team but, in my opinion, it's not a necessity. I think we should attack other area's of concern before going after an elite WR, mostly because our offense is not based upon our WR. You want to look at our record without Garcon? I agree we are a more dynamic team when he is in the game, but our losses early in the season last year were a lot deeper then a missing WR.

OK our receiving corp is not pro bowl caliber. What is revealing their weaknesses is Griffin. He brought out the best in them last year, but he's lost his mojo. So here's the rub, we pound Morris, Morris left, Morris right, Morris up the middle. The Cowboys dline is poor, having picked up a few off the couch. Once we get them on their heels, the passing game is wide open for the long bombs and we won't need many. That's my scenario for a victory. Our defense will take a beating, but if we establish the running game, the clock will wind down. I don't want to see any RGIII heroics, I want to see fundamental football with an extra helping of Alfred Morris.
