Adam Schefter, who is likely closer to Mike Shanahan than any other reporter, was on ESPN 980 Wednesday afternoon. He was asked about the coach’s relationship to Robert Griffin III. (Listen here.)

“I think the fact that they don’t get along is overdone, overstated, overemphasized, whatever you want to say,” Schefter continued. “I think there are always issues between quarterbacks and head coaches. Quarterbacks want things a certain way, head coaches another sometimes. Look at Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers. Do they not get along now, after they argued on the sideline on Sunday? You know what, I think it’s inevitable that sometimes men in those positions are going to clash. But I think more than anything else — unlike OTHERS in that organization — Mike has not gone out of his way to be friends with RGIII.”

Yes, OTHERS was emphasized. So who were these unnamed others? Immediately, I thought of the person who went to an offseason movie screening with RGIII, who went to an offseason Cafe Milano dinner with RGIII, who went to an offseason fundraiser with RGIII, who dined with RGIII in Richmond, who joked with RGIII at a luncheon, who was asked to dance at RGIII’s wedding.

Schefter on RGIII and Snyder

He's just never going to get it, is he?

He's a huge dork, who wants to be cool. So he tried to hang out with Portis in the past, and now RG3.

Is he really too stupid to understand what kind of message this sends to the rest of the team? Seriously, what is wrong with this bozo? We can never become a winner with this kind of nonsense going on.

Not that I know one way or the other but a good bit of this seems like conjecture on Schefter's part. Should Danny be mingling with the employees? It's his team so he can do what he wants. While it may not be the smartest move perception-wise, maybe Danny figures if he's gonna give this guy mega-bucks down the road he wants to get to know him a little better. Plus, maybe he wants to stay in tune with the face of the franchise.

On the other hand, if you're Griff and the owner wants to hang do you really want to say no to the guy who signs your paycheck and will eventually make you VERY rich? It may be that their relationship is innocuous and Griff really doesn't have Danny's ear in team-related matters, not that Danny won't listen. That doesn't make Bob an attention whore. Perception, in this instance, is based on winning. This kind of thing only gets brought up when you're losing.

We don't have enough **** to depress us without dredging this **** up. I am really starting to hate the media. I've noted on countless sports shows how they verbalized 'fatigue' and being sick of all the RG3 coverage. Well who the hell is talking about him? Right effing now! I thing sports media people love to see any successful team brought down, become mired in controversy, or implode. There's literally nothing they like better. When you're a vulture, you gotta have carrion. And if there isn't any real drama or controversy, just manufacture it.

This is a bunch of bull****. The owner is find of the first star QB we've had in 20 years. The coach is trying to keep the kid grounded and in the fold.

OMG! How will we get through this crisis???

If we all stop paying attention, it'll go away eventually, or we start winning those are the options. It's the same as "reality tv" or "trash tv" as I call it, people bitch about glorifying Jersey Shore or Real World or Honey Boo Boo, yet they keep watching. Ignore the ****, it goes away and in fact by my own admission I've discussed and talked ad naseum about RG3, we all say we want the kid to go out and play, well let's him play. Take a hiatus about watching, or reading or posting about him. I'm with you Boone, I'm over all the coverage, I don't need to see a segment where they interview 3 players about RG3's "swagger", "swagger"??? For **** sake, we're having interviews on "swagger", ignore, walk away from it, rant over, no more RG3 for me other than watching him play.

No wonder, "what-his-face" called RG3 a "corn-ball brother" :)
Silly RG3, having slumber parties, and feathered pillow fights, and walks in the park, with the white owner.

Not that there's anything wrong with that

:)

Boone, totally agree. But one thing is different about this article--who is saying it, and why?

I hate snyder. He hasn't leaned his lesson and never will.

There's a reason the other owners hate him too.

Boone, totally agree. But one thing is different about this article--who is saying it, and why?

Hah! Good luck, I've tried to point that out before :/

It's not different, because it's just an opinion, connecting dots that may or may not be there. I'll say it again. Snyder is fond of RG3. Shanahan worries about him keeping his perspective and being focused on what he needs to be focused on. That's really shocking news. The only thing special about Shefter is his ability to ingratiate himself to NFL higher ups.

And for the record I've never been a Snyder fan. But let's reserve criticism for things that matter. Hardly evidence here that he's inserting himself in football decisions.

Yeah, the Snyder Envy, from his foes, to some of his fans, is quite pathetic.

Wait a minute. You agree it's all about nothing? Really?

Doesn't seem like it.

Well, I don't like it. Bosses and employees socializing is never a good thing, unless it's at an organized event.

If the NFL is such a business, then relationships should be business relationships. And, frankly, DS being 'fond' of players is poison to a coach and GM who are running the team. Do you end up making a decision because the owner my not like it's impact on his 'friend'?

I wish we weren't saddled with DS. He's one of the most unpopular public figures you could name...and, he'll never rehab his reputation.

And, I truly believe, his reputation impacts us league rules-wise, discipline decisions and decisions by refs and booth folk on the playing field.

Oh, and for you defenders, I doubt DS cares where his money comes from...be it Redskins fans or opposing fans in the seats...he doesn't care who fills the seats.

I'm totally done with this owner.

I agree that boss/employee relationships have to be a certain way. But while Snyder writes the check, as it were, he isn't exactly his boss in this scenario. Shanahan is effectively Griffin's boss. If you want to see that scope, see what Shanahan is doing in the situation...which seems to be what you are wanting out of the boss/employee dynamic.

Can someone define "friend" as it would apply to the implied relationship between Snyder and Robert?

I mean, do you think that complicates [the Shanahan-RGIII dynamic]? Do you think that maybe empowers Robert if there is a dispute, to feel that he can push his will?”

“I think both of those statements are true,” Schefter said. “I think it complicates it, and I think it empowers Robert. Yes. I think both those things are true.

In Schefter's view, "friend" refers to a relationship that complicates the coaching process, and it's something that gives RG3 the feeling that he may have the upper hand in a dispute with Shanahan. Implying the same stupidity that he did with Portis.

Robert has the upper hand regardless.

Can you un-friend like Facebook?

Snyder should focus on figuring out how to run a competent, winning football team. When he does I'll stop caring about the special treatment he gives certain players.

Robert has the upper hand regardless.

I hope we're not back to the inmates running the asylum but this offseason was suggesting it, and now this comes out. (Shefter has all but admitted that what he says about the redskins is what Mike Shanahan wants him to say about the redskins.)

Due respect, gentlemen, but in my opinion some of you are reading far too much into this. If I'm reading the breeze here correctly ... a reporter with undefined "ties" to the head coach says he believes the mega-star franchise quarterback has a friendly relationship with the team owner, and from this, we draw the apparent conclusions that

1) the owner has reverted back to his early 2000's form,
2) the quarterback has lost all perspective and put his own self interest above and ahead of his team, and
3) the coach is hamstrung in his dealings with both said star quarterback and said owner, and therefore
4) all is lost and we are looking at another 20 years of suck.

Did I miss anything?
