The down to final 53 thread 2013

That's all great in theory, but if another team picks up Minnifield and he can play CORNERBACK in the NFL at a pro level for a number of years, that extra spot for special teams will seem like a luxury item. I know every ST coordinator says they have a 'system' of X number of running backs, X number of linebackers and X number of defensive backs on coverage units, but I really have to question what Jerome Murphy might bring to this team IF any of the regular corners goes down and we actually have to play him at a regular position on the field.

I think you can expect Minnifield and Nixon to be claimed off the practice squad during the season. It's a reflection of the improvement of the team that better players are becoming candidates for the PS each year.

Both Minnifield and Nixon at one time or another were rated as guys that could go between the second and fourth rounds. Teams know these players.

With his knee issues, I doubt Chase gets much interest. Nixon may very well, but as I said above, they'll do everything they can to keep him.

Compton came from a small school and I think had to come further to be considered a legit NFL prospect.

His case to me is really not that similar to Minnifield or Nixon.

Yes, some folks can laugh about guys being claimed or not off the practice squad or being claimed on waivers, but the Redskins are not quite enough of a juggernaut team for me to feel comfortable being that overconfident.

From what we saw in the preseason Compton was uneven, Hurt never played a down and Jerome Murphy is a complete question mark.

The best 53?

I simply disagree that given the situation at a number of positions on this team that have been left dangerously thin in re depth, that keeping Pat White to either purge a draft pick from another team or simply keep him off the market was the right move.

Against the Bucs, Pat White was very inconsistent. He threw a horrible pick to the LB that was returned for a touchdown and Cooley himself said that he wanted to see White be able to do more than simply look for his first key and advance to see his second or even third options. These are things both Cousins and Grossman already do.

So, again I don't know if Minnifield or Nixon will ever become consistent NFL contributors, but I think with the roster as it is with Murphy at CB and White at QB and going with only Compton as a backup OT, the Redskins are running on thin ice, thinner ice than I expected.

Welcome back for your eighth NFL season, 30-year old Reed Doughty. I had your back from the beginning. I took the ribbing and still believed, still supported you, and you returned the favor by proving me -- time and again -- absolutely right. I appreciate the gloves and picture, bro, that you sent me through my best friend on this earth. And I look forward to being able to remind folks 30 years from now that, "Yes, Reed Doughty was on that 2013 Super Bowl team."

HAIL.

Reed Doughty reminds me a bit of Mark Murphy at SS. Humble beginnings, made the team on ST contributions and was able to parlay smarts and a willingness to work hard into a legitimate NFL career.

RE: Nixon; I'm reminded of the lineman from Appalaichan State we signed a couple years ago as a UDFA, that everyone was high on and reports were that multiple teams wanted to sign him. He didn't make it.

Lets be honest; guys are UDFAs for good reason most of the time. The London Fletchers of the world are few and far between.

Agreed, BT. And those "smarts" will provide him with a lengthy NFL career, a la Murphy, once his playing days are done, if he so chooses.

Everyone loves Doughty, the guy. But he is still a liability in coverage most of the time.

Which is probably why we kept gums and will at least entertain keeping Jackson if he's reinstated.

They want him for veteran leadership and special teams. I think their roster moves show its clear they don't want him in at safety except in very special circumstances.

I am curious to see how long we keep White or Grossman. I don't see us keeping all 4 for entire season.

Next question is who goes when suspensions end.

I thought the suspended players take up a roster spot while they are suspended anyway ?

I've heard that it can be worked where they dont impact a roster spot but don't have clarification on this.

Suspended List
Players who have been suspended by the NFL are not eligible for PUP (unless they have an injury that’s going to prevent them from practicing). Those players are allowed to practice and play in preseason games. Once the final roster cut down date hits, though, any player that’s been handed a suspension goes on an inactive or reserve list and does NOT count against the 53-man roster.

Forgive me for putting a quote from a Giants board but it's the most imformative i could find.
