The Work Thread

so I've decided that no one is going to magically show up at my door and offer me the job I want, i'm going to have to work towards it.

I've signed up for some courses in the field i'm interested in. Hopefully it turns into me doing some neat project where I feel happy about what I did, like a hobby. There's always a chance it'll cause a career transition I'm looking for. We'll see.

Might I ask what field do you want to get into ?

Some sort of data analysis job that revolves around one of the sub fields of artificial intelligence - machine learning, planning, natural language processing, etc..

Basically write code that analyses big sets of data to find out information about the data. I'd love to get into robotics and autonomous design, problem is entry level in the field requires a masters degree (or so it seems) and to really do anything with it you need a phd. I was on a masters/phd track but I decided I had enough of formal education; for now...

i'm just so frekin bored out of my mind with my current job, but i can't handle making crap money while working 20-30 hours a week while i pursue a masters or phd for 3-5 years...

when i decided to stop my education with a bachelors i thought i could handle making decent money doing this job. i certainly could handle it, but i just feel... bored. i didn't go to school for 4 years, take the classes i took, and invest the time in learning these things and getting good grades to help people reset their passwords or to configure email servers...

thanks, I always try to get coworkers to hit the brewery on Friday and pick different stuff to do. gotta keep it as light as possible. in IT (like you know) it can get pretty stressful.

good luck with that...going back to school never seems like a bad choice to me. whats the worse that can happen, you get educated?

yeah, i'm actually doing the free online coursera.org school. basically professors from universities offer their class materials and lectures online. they'll grade your work too. you just don't get credit from the university.

we'll see. i'm an impulsive person. i might spend the next 2 weeks doing this then decide i'd rather take up bird watching...

Been in school for the last two weeks in Fort Lauderdale adding some endorsements to my captains license and upgrading my tonnage. Spent my entire vacation in school cause Im not a very good student. I give you guys all the credit in the world for being in careers that require tons of ongoing education. Good news is these add ons should open up new opportunities for me.

Translated, that's hilarious!

I'm not the only who's corporate office does things that make you shake your head in amazement, right?

(not in a good way either)

New guy started today. Fresh out of college.

I enjoy bringing in new people fresh out of college. Someone had to teach me all the **** college didn't, now I get to help teach someone else.

I gotta say, there have been some trials in my first year on this job, but after settling in and learning boundaries, this is a great company I work for.

yeah.

or leaving the pot with 1/2 a cup left
or not buying more coffee when you realize it's gone
or not asking before you declare the coffee done for the day and don't make more

i'm sure i could go on.

some people are amazing in their selfishness/self centeredness

I just got an email at 10pm the Friday of a holiday weekend from an agent who is demanding I photograph a listing either Sunday or Monday. I told them I could not. I really do love my job...I swear I do!

Dont skip your trip to Arlington, bro.

If I am breathing, it is my intention to always visit Arlington national Cemetery on Memorial Day. I can't think of any place I would rather be that day.

I was able to get most things done today so I have the rest of the weekend off.

Jeebus. What a day. I had 3/4 of one of my favorite whites, and even THAT didn't help that much.

Mondays blow.
