The Work Thread

T, your story reminds me of Houston drivers. You're driving down the highway, minding your business, and then they cut you off out of nowhere, for no apparent reason other than they suck at life and driving. Then, when you honk and/or flash your highbeams to let them know "hey, that's another car you just narrowly missed by a foot," they proceed to give you the one-finger salute, as if the entire incident was YOUR fault. :)

EDIT: Minus the apology, of course.

While I feel I am not earning my potential, I really love my job! Don't get me wrong, I earn enough to keep my wife home to care for our child and have some good things in life, but it'd be nice to have more toys! ;)

Anyway, today I get to photograph a 3 or 4 million dollar listing in Cal Ripken Jr's neighborhood.

Yesterday, I photographed a small row home in Baltimore and the owner was so paranoid about how the house would look in photos. When she saw them this morning she was so happy..."I can't believe it is my house!" Feels good. And I think I might be able to link the tour to the multi-million dollar listing here in a week, once it is live. Who knows, maybe one of you guys will want to purchase it. tshile?

HAH! When I can afford a half-million dollar house I'll let you know. I'm probably a few decades away from multi-dollar house, depends on inflation ;)

It is cool to see you enjoy your job though. Something most people don't get to do.

ugly side of my job is dealing with firings. I get told well before they happen, which makes things awkward.

I make fun of people in my field for doing stupid stuff all the time, or being lazy or missing something simple. It happens very often, there are a lot of people in my field that have absolutely no business being in this field. I shake my head at it and laugh.

But every one in a while I'm the one that did something stupid or missed something simple. When that happens it's humbling, it's also incredible infuriating and embarrassing. I feel like tearing the entire building down with my hands right now.

TSHILE SMASH

I have to have an unpleasant conversation with an employee today. Not looking forward to it, particularly because I could see it escalating, and I hope it doesn't. I genuinely like her, but she needs to get with the program in one or two areas or I'm not gonna have a choice.

Sigh.

There's a work thread? Didn't even know. I need to visit this place more often.

Im happy just to have a job and a chance to provide.

Wise words.

Well, that went better than expected. Good for her, she kept things under control nicely. Maybe I didn't need that glass of wine ahead of time?

There are days where I seriously question why I'm doing the job I'm doing, I could be doing something that would be much more exciting and rewarding.

Those days are happening more and more often.

Making tough decisions sucks. One day I'll have the balls to do what needs to be done...

Its tough being stuck between "comfortable work environment" and "earning potential." At what point does money trump everything else?

I have up and quit three jobs.

I've been laid off three times.

Not once in my 20 year career have I left one job and had another already lined up. If it's sink or swim, you'll swim. Trust me.

Two months ago I lost my bread-and-butter client. Two thirds of my income chopped off with almost no warning.

Time to start swimming.

Yeah, for me it's not about how much I make. I know this sounds stupid, but I don't really care how much I make... I'm in a field and have enough credentials that even the floor pays a decent wage. It's about enjoying what you do.

The problem is I am an impulsive person and I know that. So I try not to make rash decisions on important things like my job... Trying to balance that with not being afraid to make a move to get more out of my job is hard...

There's a lot to be said for a relaxed working environment....

Been here a few times in life...it blows my wife away that I always land on my feet and everything works out. After 18 years in Corporate, she is a very fiscally structured individual who doesn't like to take these risks.

I am now in a position that I love my job but don't earn nearly as much as I probably "could". Been shopping for a new car lately and have to tell you, I know I could do a better job than those jerks. Problem is...not sure I could lie to people's faces as easily as these ****offs do. Been to 4 different dealerships in the last week and have caught someone at all 4 dealerships in a flat out lie. Made them look stupid for it too...

And ZIP IT MIKE!!! This is a work thread, not an..."My Bronco will yank the rear end out of your Chevy" thread.

I took a massive pay cut earlier this year, left a job 'with a future' but with long hours and a lot if stress. Probably would've been a VP in the company in a coue years. I don't regret it as I now only have to worry about myself, work in a relaxed setting, and have a life away from work.

Everyone's different but I'll never take another high profile leadership job again... Just not worth it to me. I think I'm definitely a 'work to live' kind of person.

some people speak in jargon and buzzwords because they don't actually know what they're talking about.

those people are irritating to listen to.
