Music Recommendation Thread

I didn't like this song at first, but it grew on me. "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye:

Here is a-possibly even better cover by a band named Walk Off the Earth:

I've been listening to a lot of cover songs lately trying to find ones that were really unique. I stumbled upon this gem, and it's easily the best cover I have ever heard of this. Extremely relaxing too............

Great guess, but it's actually John Wetton of Asia.
UK was a rare successful "super-group" which also featured Terry Bozzio on drums

"Successful"? Lasting only 4 years and not having an album get higher than 45th on the US charts? I'm not sheltered musically and until you mentioned them I'd never heard of them.

Sorry, just nit-picking. Carry on. I like the suggestion anyway as the purpose of this thread is to get recommendations, and this fits the bill.

Let me throw one out there, Pseudosix:

I swear, if I still smoked weed, I could get stoned and listen to that all day. Run Rebel that is, haven't listened to the others yet.

Guilty pleasure time. I bought 21 by Adele and it has gotten more time on my stereo than any other single album in the last 3 or 4 months. This girl has some pipes and her interviews are delightful.

For anyone living under a rock who may have caught this girl before:

I've been listening to Fun. lately; you've probably heard this single from the Chevy commercial:

The rest of their catalog is pretty good also.

Neo, if you like Adele, the chick from the above video Janelle Monae is pretty good.

The is pretty nice there Lanky. A bit more of a hip-hop feel than I usually go for but she has a sweet voice without any of the diva tendencies I have come to expect from girls who can really get it. That's why I like Adele too. She sings it pretty straight up.

As a Renaissance Faire goer and performer for low these last 2 decades, I have become a fan of well done bagpipe music. The key here is "well done" because there is little in this world worse than poorly played bagpipes. This year a group new to me is playing my home festival of Scarborough Renaissance Festival just south of Dallas. The group is Tartanic and I am impressed.

No, this probably isn't for everyone but if you aren't familiar with music played by talented pipers, I urge you to give them a serious listen before discounting it. These guys make me want to get up and dance, something I really haven't done in a decade or so.

A little AC/DC for Big Mike...

And because no selection of pipe music is complete without Amazing Grace...

O.K., here's some of what I've been liking lately.

Lower Heaven, for one.

Such a strange video, but a really good song. It's like a weird cross between Sting, MGMT and Peter Gabriel. They even throw a hot chick in halfway through to take away from the uncomfortable nature of the first half.......you'll see what I mean

Apparently the woman in the video is hitting it pretty big too. She's pretty good too, similar to Gwen Stefani, but with more power.

Great new band from Iceland, really loving these guys right now.

Not exactly new, but I can't get enough of "Sleigh Bells." Probably not for everyone, but great 'get up and go' music. Not even really sure how to categorize them, except in the AWESOME category.

The excessive misuse of bass in these songs for me completely kills what would otherwise probably have been good music.

It's a shame too, because I've noticed it's becoming the trend lately with a lot of bands, and I don't like it. Thumping bass doesn't make any song better.

On the up side, if you take out the bass they sound like a combination of MGMT and Gravity Kills, two bands I like.

What was that, Grandpa? Can't hear you over the awesome bass in my music!

EDIT: no need to trash other's music; you could have just said "too much base for my liking."

So you insult me, then complain that I don't like bass? You are so strange.

And I didn't trash your music. I can assure you that I am easily the most musically open minded person on this site, and it's probably by a very wide margin. I love it all. I just don't see the point of excessive bass. It adds nothing to a song at all. It's like when you sit at a stop light, and some guy pulls up behind you with the song cranked down and the bass cranked up, and it rattles your brain.......you find that appealing? If you do, that's fine, I would just rather listen to music without constant thumping.

Nothing about excessive bass is awesome btw :)
