I remember seeing a thread similar to this, but for the life of me I can't find it. Anyhow, I know we all like different types of music, but I always like to get a read on what bands come highly recommended by other people, whether big or small name bands, because I love music and love to constantly expand my collection with bands I have not listened to before.

One of my all time favorite bands is Social Distortion. They were probably one of the first bands that I really dug. They recently released a new album, and when I saw them performing a song from it, I loved it right away. Here's the video they filmed for Guitar Center Sessions that debuted earlier in the month.

Another band that I found out about by accident at a concert a few years ago is The Dirty Heads. I have heard maybe one or two of their songs that are absolute ****, but the rest is pretty awesome. They are very similar to Sublime, so if you were a Sublime hater, I promise you will hate them too. Nonetheless, here are a few of my favorites.

A cover of Coldplay's Viva La Vida (which I think blows away the original)

I really love a lot of the music that has come out of California for the past two decades, it's hard to find anything that beats it outside of a few bands.

I saw a lot of Rome's videos on youtube before he hooked up with Sublime, dude is phenomenal.

FOr anyone who hasn't listened to her songs yet, do yourself a favor and give it a go. Think what it would sound like if Mazzy Star and The Smashing Pumpkins got together and played some blues music. I love it.

Yeah, I really love that woman! One of my favorite things is when I am sitting here BS'ing with you numb skulls and she is on the couch playing the guitar. I always tell her to play Freebird!

I'm a big fan on Young the Giant since I saw them perform at the VMAs this year. Check their song "My Body" and I think that's indicative of their style.

I also really like My Morning Jacket and would recommend listening to them.

Hadn't heard this one in a looooong time. I forgot all about them.

I also recommend Lionize. Very laid back, summer drive kind of band.

I originally posted this over at The Noosphere but thought I would add it here.

A friend turned me on to this British folk rock band, Mumford and Sons, and they are becoming a bit addictive for me. There nominated for two Grammies in 2010, including a nomination for Best New Artist. Thought I would share.

This is a haunting number made even more so by being done live in an acoustic set performed in a bookshop concert. Nothing to hide behind like this. You either have the chops to pull it off or you sink and these guys do a great job.

And my personal favorite from their first album..

Love me some Mumford & Sons, Neo! Supposedly they put on one helluva live show also, I was really hoping they'd come to ACL this year (actually I think they were there last year and I missed them).

EDIT: Neo, if you like M&S, you should check out the Avett Brothers.

Saw these guys on Letterman and thought they were amazing. Started listening to some of their other stuff, and it's amazing how musically gifted these guys are.

Newest Black Keys single "Lonely Boy" was posted to Youtube by the band - sounds awesome!

EDIT: also, love the mad dancing skills.

This guy just recently performed at my work, and I was surprised by his voice. When he talks, he sounds so different compared to the way he projects singing. His songs are generally uplifting too. Justin Hines
first one he sang

He and his wife produce the music and videos. It was pretty cool to meet them after the performance. I was surprised somebody at my work was aware of him and was willing to fly him and his wife down to DC from Canada to perform. Seems like they took a risk, but I and quite a few others were happy they chose him to open up the CFC season here.
