I think that's what they're doing. Seems to me that Atogwe and Sellers were unlikely to come back anyway. If we start seeing some big(ger) names here soon, that may signal a true strategy shift.

Sellers saves just over $1 mil and OJ saves $3.4 mil.

A trade may be in the works for Moss and/or DHall. Nothing confirmed there, but it is out there as being possible.

We are going to spread it out over two years. That should give us about $18 mil. to work with this year - today's releases (thus far) moves the figure to about $21 mil.

Hate it, but it may not be as bad as thought. With the cap for 2013, we could be far lower with wiggle room, but not too bad - some re-structures and releases will help.
 
Hmmm...looks like Bruce Allen's genius as a bean-counter is going to be put to the test.
 
Look at it this way... we won't have a first-round pick for '13 to worry about fitting in the cap.

Not sure the legitimacy, but apparently the Bears and Packers both gave huge bonuses in-season to players in the uncapped year. Bears to Peppers, Packers to Tramon Williams.
 
I'm trying to figure out how a hit of $36 mill puts us in the hole. I thought we had roughly $40 mill in space. Was I wrong?

One successful team that is tight and doesn't want free agency to be the key to any team's rise (NYG) joins forces with financially ailing franchises like Buffalo, Jacksonville, Cincinnati and San Diego to penalize other teams that have the means to improve beyond the one pick by round draft.

That's why you have 9-7 and 10-6 teams winning the Super Bowl when 25 years ago that record might not have even qualified you for the playoffs.

Glad to see NBA players take control of their own careers and refuse to let a small market tyrant like Dan Gilbert ruin the best years of their prime with go-nowhere clubs.

True BD but to a degree we have that same NFL socialism to thank for where the game is today while other pro leagues try in vain to keep up with the NFL. So I guess we take the bad with the good.
 
No, it just means that some teams are artificially propped up and remain profitable with revenue sharing despite having their games blacked out and drafted players held hostage there for 4-5 years.

Seriously, do you think the quality of the NFL product would go up or down if teams like JAX and Buffalo and Cincinnati were contracted?

For fans in these cities if you don't buy tickets you lose almost the entire season to local restrictions anyway.

To me this is like the advent of computers. Imagine if your business industry said you still had to use typewriters because that was part of the system that made American business successful in the 1960's?

The NFL's system of player allotment is antiquated and only rewards the dinosaurs.

And the dinosaurs know it and don't want to lose what for them is a good thing.

While I see your point regarding Jax, Buffalo and Cincy, I raise you Pittsburgh and Green Bay where the games always sell out but due to be small markets would have never the revenue to compete in a model like that used by Major League Baseball. How many times in the last 10 years have the Pirates and Brewers been relevant in baseball?
 
I think Pitt and Milwaukee work against you not for you, Bob. The Brewers were very, VERY relevant with Cece Sabathia, which proves that if your front office knows how to draft well and sign good "Moneyball" type players, you can succeed. The A's, Marlins and Rays prove this out as well, imo.
 
Right, but overall attendance has been at a all-time high around the majors.

Some cities that were important coal and river ports in the early part of the 20th century have been eclipsed by growth in other areas of the country.

Pittsburgh and Cleveland are net losers in terms of population each year as younger people move for jobs.

An NBA or NFL without Cleveland 30 years ago was unthinkable, but today?

Buffalo is another city that just doesn't have the long-term viability.

The basketball team moved years ago. The hockey team almost left 2 years ago. And the Bills are looking for Toronto to help bail them out?
