Your Least Favorite Washington HC of the last 30 Years

It was two quick comments for crying out loud.

For a place that prides itself in being laid back there sure seems to be a lot of moderators reminding people to stay in line.

i get not wanting to completely derail threads but theres not enough traffic around here to be this quick on the trigger.

Spurrier because he walked into the NFL thinking he knew better than everyone else, not only in the X's & O's but also the preparation and work it takes during camp & practice to field a competitive team. At the first sign of trouble it seemed like he basically viewed it as a personal burden and seemed to tune out completely.

At least every other coach over the last 30 years, yes, even Zorn, was AT LEAST trying to win.

I picked Spurrier because he was definitely not even putting anything in to it and he was doomed to fail from day 1. He was never going to be the next Jimmy Johnson. That Florida roster of his was ridiculous. Doofus Dan wasn't even going to fire him, he quit.

Zorn was the dumbest hire though because he had never even been a coordinator and he was already in his mid 50s as a QB coach.

Rivera was also dumb. He proved that he sucked in Carolina so Doofus Dan also gave him control of everything, including the team name apparently.

They were all bad except for Schottenheimer who immediately got fired. Shanahan actually did better than I expected with no QB most of those years. They also hired the wrong gruden.

Answering the question asked, my least favorite HC (not necessarily the worst, though he’s in contention — which is a good thing bc it contributed to Snyder selling) is Rivera.

I swear it’s not recency bias, I felt contempt for Rivera in a way I’ve rarely experienced towards a non-violent stranger. Made worse because he had this underserved reputation for being such a good guy while standing behind Snyder after he no longer had to. Weird performative obsession with the military which is always a red flag for a non-military guy. Coward at the podium, always passing the buck and making excuses year after year after year, while sounding actually unintelligent (which obviously isn’t the case, but his coach speak was so careless as to be insulting to the fans he and Snyder were consistently losing). The last couple years lamenting that he was running the whole operation and didn’t have the bandwidth, when that’s the only reason he ever agreed to work for Snyder in the first place and he eagerly jumped into it.

I feel for the guy because his cancer sucked the vitality right out of him. He was a shell of the man he started as, by the time he left us (a trend with Snyder hires but his health was obviously a factor). Really by the end of year 2. So I won’t trash him for his lack of energy, care, or effort. It wasn’t just that he was BAD at his job though. I’d seen that often enough before. I don’t let him off the hook for his failings in conduct while losing here, which are many and which I’ve scratched the surface of above.

He sucked, but plenty of coaches had sucked here before. Zorn sucked, but I didn’t disrespect him as a man and leader by the time he left here, he was just in over his head and doing his best. I did however feel that way about Rivera, and seeing him on TV speaking with any sort of authority on coaching in the league makes me ill. His fragile ego, absolutely hollow leadership ability, and late defense of Snyder while here is what I’ll always remember. Not a man who walks his talk.

The funny thing about Spurrier is that his time here is nearly forgotten. He quit and the next day Joe Gibbs came back and that naturally became the story. He was never subject to some of the Snyder ugliness that befell Turner, Zorn, and others.

All things considered, he got off cheap.

For me gotta go with Zorn. I will never forgive him for the “swinging gate” twice in a row debacle. “Maroon and black,” etc. etc. To be fair to him, he wasn’t hired to be head coach. Should have been Greg.

Spurrier? Seemed like a slam dunk at the time, even though I wasn’t happy Voldemort fired Marty to make the hire. Initially, I got on board. Spurrier it turned out just didn’t want to put the work in necessary to be a successful head coach in the NFL. He cared so much he quit from a golf course.

Shanahan? I liked Shanny, and I felt RG3 was more in the wrong on how things turned out here for him than Shanny was. He wasn’t perfect, but he was far from the worst. From what I have read, If Shanny had his way we would not have drafted RG3 and would have gone with either Cousins or Wilson. Might not have had 2012 the way we remember, but the sustained success might have been better over the long haul.

Ron? Might have been a better coach if he wasn’t also dealing with a plethora of other things that others should have been dealing with. Like the draft and the rebrand. He is another example of how the head coach handling everything doesn’t work. Decent man, but in over his head here under those conditions.

For the others, Petitbon, pretty bad head coach for one year, but he gets a pass for his defenses under Gibbs and the fact the team was old at that point. Norv? We had some success with Norv. Gruden the same.

For me, straight up Zorn is the worst. 2009 might be my low point as a fan.

I think some presentism is at work for Ron here also. If you thought Ron was bad go back and examine the Zorn years. Just pour yourself a stiff one first.

They had essentially the exact same winning percentage, if Rivera’s single tie game was instead a loss or instead if Zorn had won one single additional game, it would flip and Zorn’s win percentage would actually be slightly higher.

Why does Ron get any sort of credit/benefit of the doubt because he had additional duties beyond being a HC making his job tough when that’s the only reason he came to work for Dan Snyder? That’s why he took the job, it’s not like it was thrust upon him unexpectedly or against his wishes. His huge ego coming off his Panthers collapse made him think he could do it, or he would’ve hired a real GM and stuck to coaching. He had the power to do that. Same with his involvement in the rebrand and all the other organization things he had input with Snyder about. His ego outpaced his competency, but it wasn’t until he obviously failed that he regretted it (which is understandable). But he didn’t need to do any of that to be the HC.

Conn I don’t really disagree with you. Ron sucked at his job, but worse than Zorn?

My level of embarrassment under Zorn was substantially higher than at any point under Ron. I also put a lot of that on Farquaad’s shenanigans as well.

Certainly some ego at work there. But is it possible Ron wanted to be GM to keep it out of Snyder's hands and away from his cadre of toadies? I mean, at that point Snyder is a known quantity. It might have been the edge he felt he needed to do what others could not. Or so he thought.

Regardless of whether he was debatably the worst HC in the last 30 years Xs and Os and personnel he certainly was the worst person to be in the position he was at the time of the name change.

His part in getting Commanders foisted upon the fanbase could in fact qualify him for worst HC title. Jim Zorn may have no idea what our colors are and tried the swinging gate twice, but it isn't as bad as lobbying for Commanders...

Ron is apparently on the call for our game this weekend on radio. Didn't realize he was still doing that despite the Cal GM gig

I'm so sick of the Shanny hate. Byron Leftwhich's coach played him in a game where he needed to be carried up the field by his linemen. And that was a college player. Griffin was cleared by the doctor and told the coach he was OK.

I agree. Mike Shanahan was a proven Super Bowl winning head coach. Yes he had Elway in Denver, but he had also been a successful assistant in other places with other Super Bowl winners. He should’ve been a great success story here. If we had the HOG at that time I guarantee the record would be different.

As it is, Shanny owns his record in Washington, but I put a lot of his problems on ownership. Snyder buddying up to RG3 did him no favors…that was a classic example of undermining your leadership. Forcing Haynesworth on him and the media circus that followed was another. Mike Shanahan should have set us up for multiple years of success with Kyle taking over when he was done. As it is, just like with everyone else under Snyder…the ship sank. At least Gibbs 2 brought us respectability and two playoff runs during his second tenure…in spite of Snyder not because of him.

Shanahan didn't give a crap about anyone but himself.

Compare how the current coach is handling JD5s injury, with what Shanahan did.

Would you want Shanahan to be coaching our future franchise QB, JD5 right now?

No chance in hell.

Shanahan didn't give a crap about anyone but himself.

The man has two Super Bowl rings and at least one that I can remember as an assistant in San Francisco. He must have been doing something right.

People don’t follow someone that cares only about themselves and get that kind of a result.

Being bad at football is never worse than the worst of the embarrassing extracurricular stuff, and Rivera was the willing face of the franchise during Snyder worst years in that regard. And he defended him to the bitter end and beyond, even after the sale was final. That’s a dishonor worse than any poor record. And I have to emphasize again that no matter how you felt about it then or in retrospect, Rivera’s winning percentage was exactly the same as Zorn’s. Half a game’s difference. Rivera was just as bad as Zorn, with less excuse for his incompetence, over a longer period of time, was more dislikable doing it (imo) and wasn’t a victim of Snyder so much as a willing partner of Snyder, who had the benefit of seeing every other coach’s experience with that ownership before he greedily signed the contract with haste. He knew what Snyder was, more than anyone before, and still took the job and took bullets in the media for that turd even after the sale. He sucks.

My perspective on Ron is different.

I don’t see his tenure or public behavior the same way you do. I will grant you that his winning percentage was the same as Zorn’s.

I also think Ron is an honorable man in the vein of Joe Gibbs (albeit infinitely worse at coaching football) who is going to take the high road with his employer. What Ron really thinks of Snyder we will never know, and we shouldn’t quite honestly. I also give Ron a bit of a pass for his cancer battle. I can’t imagine having to deal with everything he was dealing with in the organization and fight that as well. Lesser men would’ve probably quit.

Folks are mentioning Zorn’s strong start, but I always thought of that as him riding Gibbs’ momentum. I think he should be judged for how his team did after he had been in charge a while, and they were shockingly bad.

Anyway, Spurrier was the worst for me. His team was never any good, and usually an outright embarrassment. His tenure is made worse in the context of him replacing Marty, who had rallied the team after a bad start and would go on to be pretty good in San Diego. Add to that Spurrier’s success at SC, which was like salt in the wound after his abysmal showing here. Not many in our history irritate me more than him.

But Zorn and Spurrier have to be the bottom two. At least the others (even Rivera) managed some success in the form of winning the division or making the playoffs. Excluding the year he bought the team and Gibbs II, that’s as good as it ever got during Snyder’s ownership.
