Who was the worst HC we've had in the last 30 years? In your opinion, who underperformed the most, or who really hurt the franchise the most?

The real answer is Zorn but I don’t know what was really expected.

Shanny was the biggest underperformer. The guy had a 6-10, 5-11 and 3-13 season.

Ron objectively was probably the best of the bunch. Had the playoff season in his first year and we were in the chase until COVID hit the team in 21 and until late in the season in 22, both years w Heinicke as our de facto starter. I think the reason he is going to win this is recency bias mainly but also the arrogance in press conferences, being the worst GM in the Snyder era and the nepotism hires.

He is about on par with Jay but the reason Jay is ahead is he has the excuse of not having personnel control and dealing with Bruce giving him a bunch of guys he didn’t want

method man - why are you so convinced it should be Zorn over Spurrier?

Spurrier insisted in getting FL players here thinking he could simply coach em up and beat everyone. His hilarious takes on preseason were comical even for local fans who wanted the team to be good. Dropping 40 in preseason and thinking you were awesome.

Why is Zorn obviously worse? The swinging gate play? I remember Zorn starting one Eason 7-1 and melting down but I don’t remember any such 8-game performance under Steve Spurrier. Seems like it is not obvious to me that Jimmy Z is worse than Stevey S.

When talking about Rivera, I think it's important to separate the HC and the GM.

Rivera the GM continuously sabotaged Rivera the HC with poor draft picks and lousy FA acquasitions. With that in mind, Rivera the HC is no where near the worst thing we have seen in DC over the last 30 years.

I mean, it's pretty clearly Zorn... but also, he has the least amount of fault. NO ONE thought he was a head coach.... is the guy supposed to say NO when offered the job? But he was in way over his head...

Rivera probably did the most damage, but again, that was the genius owner (and Mr. "The Culture is Damn Good") who thought he was capable of being a head coach / CEO type. Again, no one thought that was a good fit, but his drafting was terribad.

Spurrier--For the first time in my fanhood, I literally turned off the tv the day his hiring was announced, and I don't remember watching another game until he was gone. Being from FL, I already knew what was going to happen.

Zorn--In way over his head, but he actually won a few games, and I have to give him credit for having to work with Dan Snyder.

Rivera--Literally anyone reading this right now could have drafted better. And that's just mind-blowing when you're talking about a professional franchise. He not only killed us while he was here, but his absolute stupidity continues to hurt us to this day. It's hard to articulate just how awful he was.

But my vote goes to Shanahan. I feel that he put his own shot at one more SB above the health and career of RG3, and above the long term success of the team. He never should have played RG3 on that bad knee, and his nonsense, and confusion about the medical staff supposedly clearing him seemed like bs. He knew RG3 wasn't healthy--but he didn't care. To my knowledge, he never coached again at any level after Washington--and that's probably a good thing.

I hope it keeps him out of the HOF for eternity.

I would name Gruden. He seemed, to me at least, to just not give a damn.

Zorn was an anomaly. Clearly over his head, but as mentioned, he had a strong start. The thing is, I liked the way he conducted himself with regards to Snyder's Reign of Terror. Kept his cool under horrid pressure.

I could go on but honestly Vince Lombardi himself would have struggled with Snyder as owner. Even the Gibbs Part II was not the resounding success we all expected.

Jay Gruden would be my pick also.
Gruden (.416 winning percentage) had a better record than Rivera (.394 winning percentage), won the Division once, and took us to a playoff game. Ron never won the Division, and never made the playoffs--correction, Ron did take us to the playoffs in his first year.

But more importantly, Gruden gave us Terry McLaurin, Montez Sweat, and Payne.

I can't think of anyone Ron gave us. If any of his last 3 first round picks had hit, we'd be in a much different situation today--Jamin Davis, Jahan Dotson, or Emmanuel Forbes.

Ron won the division and took us to the playoffs in 2020, albeit with a losing record- which I found more astounding than impressive.

Ron holds the most unique HC role in our history. He was the last coach of the Redskins, the only coach of the WFT, and the first coach of the Commanders.

I sort of liked Ron as a person and admired his fight with Cancer while working for Snyder. I never cared for Gruden. That probably skews my view, but in the end neither were adequate.

We just took a beating in every sense of the word and this is what you want to talk about.

We're breaching the general definition of masochism.

We were banged up and maybe took Atlanta too lightly.

No worries, we're winning this weekend.

Honestly, they are all about the same to me. None were gonna have sustained success under the WOS.

If we are strictly talking Coaching and not playing GM like RR, it would have to be Shanahan based on the way he handled RG3.

Otherwise, Xs and Os and on field personnel management, you could plug in anyone and they would fall somewhere between a little above mediocre or a little below mediocre due to the culture under the WOS.

WOS?

Warlock of Satan? LOL

Soooooooo many choices. Zorn or Spurrier? I give it to Zorn by a hair. Then Spurrier. Then probably Gruden/ Rivera, then Norv. Shanny was just disappointing. Of course they were all hampered by But Boy Vinnie and the worst sports owner ever, Lord Farquaad. Hopefully, the Football gods torment his dreams
