Now, I don't know if it was possible to be decisive if they really were aiming for Johnson and Johnson kept them dangling until yesterday, but it does feel like they've been caught flat footed. Part of me thinks that the moment Johnson said, "No!" They should have gone to their B candidate and offered them the job. I mean they've already conducted all the interviews. I think the challenge with this was timing. From what I gathered, they interviewed Macdonald Monday night, and Quinn Tuesday morning, then were flying to Detroit to interview Glenn and Johnson.

They had interviewed Slowik and Raheem Morris as well. Morris was already hired as a HC. I find it hard to believe Slowik was a leading candidate with 1 year as passing game coordinator and 1 year as OC.

So, when Johnson said "no thank you" they were on an airplane. And they were set to interview Glenn.

My guess is they interviewed Glenn as planned, and then they moved to try and sign the one they liked. However, Seattle had a jump on hiring Macdonald. He was probably their primary candidate to begin with, they talked to him earlier, and probably had the ball rolling on getting him an offer.

I actually have a sneaky suspicion their #2 was Morris. Johnson #1, Morris #2, and then probably a gaggle of Macdonald, Quinn, Glenn and Weaver.

The Falcons hiring Morris early was a big deal.

Johnson backing out was a big deal.

We'll never know if they made a serious run at Macdonald or not, I don't think. At least, they won't say so, because it would immediately undermine the coach they end up hiring.

I think there was a timing aspect of this, and an unbelievably unprofessional move from Johnson to essentially say "turn the plane around" on Tuesday.

Most likely, it will be Quinn. I'm kindof hoping it's Aaron Glenn. But we'll see.
 
Oh, one more thing: I'm not going to freak out about whoever it is. If it's Quinn, I think it's a "wait and see." I'll be fascinated to see who he brings in as an OC.

The one thing which would cause me serious concern is if they hire one of these guys and the plan for the offense is to retain EB. Assuming EB is gone, and there is a new OC, it will be really interesting to see who that is.

For reasons I can't quite put my finger on, I think there's a chance Frank Reich might have tied himself to one of the defensive HC candidates. Like Wade Phillips tied himself to McVay. I'm hoping it's Quinn. I think I could get behind a Quinn/Reich HC/OC combo with Peters as GM. I think it would be a very well coached team.
 
Of course I'll freak out, but then I'll rally.
Unless someone makes an amazing case for the hire I don't think I will be excited. That doesn't mean the coach can't be a solid, good, or great hire. I talked myself into being excited by the dice roll that was Spurrier for goodness sakes. I guess I'm going to have to content myself with the knowledge that Belichick was originally a retread HC that had a losing first stint.
 
It almost seems at this point that there is potentially (there’s that word again) someone on either San Fran or KC that is moving up the wish list.

Hmm... okay, you have my attention ;)

Steve Wilks might be intriguing. He actually did quite well as interim HC of Carolina and SF had a very good defense until they traded for Chase Young. On a more serious note, I wonder if Wilks defense is too much in the Rivera school of rush four and lay back?
 
It just strikes me that there surely must be a mystery candidate in play. If not, why the waiting around with egg on their faces when there are multiple interviewed candidates at the ready?
 
At this point, I'm ready for them to make Cody Gibbs the HC and Bartholomae Pettibone the DC.
 
Can I be assistant long snapping coach?
 
Is there any chance now that he didn't get a single job offer that Belichick compromises and agrees to come to Washington as strictly the head coach with Peters remaining in charge of draft/free agency/personnel?

He is what, 14 games short of Shula's record?

I would guess he didn't anticipate missing the 2024 season.

And Peters started his NFL career where?............................New England with Belichick winning Super Bowl against the Eagles.
