I'm assuming before, as Dan Quinn was seen at the airport an hour before this report came down.

That is 10000% speculation on my part.

The Johnson interview was supposed to be a 2pm, as far as I'd heard. If true, they never even did the interview. Be interesting to hear how it played out.

As hinted at earlier, to me Macdonald is the clear choice now. At least based on the same media narrative that had us all assuming Johnson was the guy.

This is all a good reminder not to let oneself believe that the media narrative necessarily reflects reality.

Media creates buzz.

Reality does reality.

Media reminds us media is not reality, moves merrily on.

Rich didn't know Johnson bailed out before the interview ... not common knowledge yet.

WFAN is reporting that Washington's executives were IN THE AIR already when Johnson finally called and indicated he wasn't interested in becoming a head coach this year.

Not the best look. One would think Johnson could have informed the team yesterday or earlier than an hour or two before the interview was supposed to happen.

This circumstance reminds me of an old saying (in reverse):

"If you are talking about retirement, then you are retired"

In this case, Johnson went through an interview and discussions already and to go back and forth like this just shows he may be more comfortable as a coordinator and isn't ready to take on a top job.

How far did Johnson think the Lions were going this year? They surprised a lot of us during the season and in the playoffs and certainly in that first half against the 49ers.

There is no guarantee that the Lions reach this point again. An injury to Goff next year and Detroit ends up in 3rd place.

I hope Johnson's agent told him he just lost the difference between the $1M he is making now and the $5-6M he probably would have earned in a HC contract with Washington or Seattle.

It feels a little bit like a panic move. I bailed on a job the day before my start date once because it just didn’t feel right. Thank God he bailed (late or not) because he’s either not ready or something didn’t feel right.

He may well regret it down the road.

He may be an emotional guy and just got upset at how much crap the Lions have been receiving around the NFL media over their second half meltdown on Sunday.

Perhaps he's in 'we will show them next time' mode?

If Al is right and he doesn't want to come here for another reason, like he doesn't have an easy fit with an established franchise quarterback like Justin Herbert then he is DEFINITELY the wrong guy for the job.

The last thing we need here is Norv Jr.

I will laugh if this guy is waiting around for Mike McCarthy to be fired so he can go to Dallas next offseason.

I think that ignores a more likely explanation. He doesn’t feel ready. It’s hard to turn down a offer that’s going to make you extremely wealthy at the top of your profession and both the DC and Washington jobs are considered top-notch opportunities.

It takes a lot of courage to take a huge job like this and he may just be under so much stress he took the path of least resistance.
