The lack of love for McDonald may have had to do with when the poll was posted Om. At the start of the search, I was all in on two things: no retreads and a great offensive mind. As the playoffs unfolded, my list evolved to someone great on their side of the ball and McDonald is great on his side of the ball. Johnson seems to be, too.

The majority of Lions fans on twitter are strongly advocating for Washington to hire Glenn over Johnson. IYKYK

Also, there is a great puff piece/bio on Johnson in this morning's Washington Post.

I imagine that MacDonald is high on a lot of peoples lists... just not no.1

I'd be excited about getting MacDonald, but i prefer an offensive HC for the reasons we've talked about before... because Defensive coaches are susceptible to losing their OCs more frequently due to the good ones getting HC opportunities. I imagine if we were to say "pick your top 3 coaching candidates", MacDonald's name would be very apparent.

No disagreement, ST. Again, in a world where Johnson and Macdonald are both great coordinators on their respective sides of the ball, I favor Johnson as well. For the same reasons.

Only caveat I'm pointing out is that if one of the two exudes leadership qualities that clearly outshine the other--and I'm just going by gut feeling here--I'm sitting here today thinking MacD might be that guy. If he ends up being the hire I think that's what Peters and Harris are going to say is the reason.

Before I comment on the discussion, I want to say I've been on the side of hiring an offensive coach for reasons already stated in this thread. That really hasn't changed.

Having said that, if Harris and Peters find their "leader of men" in a defensive guy, I have to believe that the guy is smart enough to know that good offensive talent gets poached yearly. That guy will have a plan to create a pipeline of solid talent always coming up on the offensive side of the ball and that will hopefully create a continuity there.

If I'm Harris and Peters, I'm equally aware of it, and questions around that are part of the interview process to gauge the awareness and planning of the guy I'm thinking about hiring.

This will be me once the interviews are over today.

The lateness of this hire one way or another is going to create a challenge in assembling a coaching staff for next season.

So, if we go for a defensive coach we are not only going to need an OC of quality but a quarterbacks coach to boot if that #2 pick is for a passer.

I don't know if the 'solution' is to do what Beathard did with Joe Gibbs and pair him with a veteran DC in Richie Petitbon.

Perhaps if MacDonald is the hire Peters goes out and hires a former HC or veteran coach to oversee the offense the way the Eagles did with Fangio on D.

It could be someone Peters has a line on that is willing to come in and take on that more limited role.

As a fly on the wall, I would like to know what OC candidates Macdonald has in his pocket. That goes the same for Johnson and DCs.

All of these evaluations make it all the more unbelievable that John Harbaugh could get the Ravens job after being their special teams coach.

He must have had an amazing meeting with the owner and GM that blew their doors off.

Okay, dagnabbit where's our news! I'm ready to start debating staffing :ROFLMAO:

Well cross Ben Johnson off the list... wowo

Mike McDonald sounds good to me if this post is legit.

Seeing reports that his asking price is out of this world

Gotta say, I really respect that about Ben Johnson. Good for him. He started something there, knows that jumping ship will mean taking time to build something up, and wants a chance to see it through. Respect for that.
He will have opportunities, if he can continue his successes.

All that said, best of luck having an opportunity like what is building here, buddy. <-- that is not my style to ever talk like that, but man... after 25 years of SHAME, I had to say it once.

This is a valid point, we have zero idea how things went down

Who's to say we were even truly in on him? We all believed it, but nobody from our side of the table has said a damn thing about the planned direction...

Were all assuming we were offering him the job.

Was this before or after the in person interview today?

Honestly, one of the BEST parts of this whole process is the lack of leaks. It's truly a great feeling. So this is what real hope feels like? The "hope" I felt in the past 20 or so years (because after 2 years it already felt like we were doomed; the handling of the Marty situation and the rehiring of Vinny already smelled rank) was always next to a big pit in my stomach, knowing that the big Kahuna was a proven moron. We don't know what the future holds, but at least right now I am enjoying this process a lot. The Peters hire, the statement that "leadership" is the quality they need first and foremost (a sentiment I am 100% on board with for a HC; coordinators should be the Xs/Os experts you absolutely need/want)... so far, so good.

The Ben Johnson stuff definitely made "some" sense, with the Spielman connection. However, the amount of interviews they have been doing should mean they weren't sure on anything.

My feeling would be that he was wanted, no one was committing to anything yet, and he had already decided he wanted to run it back. I mean, it's not based on anything in particular so could easily be wrong, but just my feeling. Worth less than 2c.
