I think they should not allow any contact until after the Super Bowl. No coaching interviews of any kind. Not even college coaches or unemployed coaches. If a team wants to fire a coach on black Monday, they don’t get to start talking to guys for 5 weeks. That way it’s all on the same level playing field and coaches aren’t distracted by interviews or leaving. What is the reasoning to let this happen so early? Just make a blanket rule across the board. No one has any advantage or disadvantage. If you want to promote from within a la the Patriots or Raiders, that’s fine. But that is your only way to interview or hire until after the Super Bowl.
 
The NFL should consider having a Job Fair. 😉

Didn’t we have to wait until after the SB to talk to Bieniemy? (Yes, I know there was a rule change this year.)
 
It’s not just about hiring a HC. These guys have to fill all of their staff positions and have less than 2 months before free agency and the NFL draft. Hard to do that without knowing what kinds of offense and defense you will run.
 
If you force teams to wait until after the Super Bowl to speak with ALL candidates, even those from teams eliminated before or during the playoffs, that puts these teams at a distinct disadvantage given that the league has ADDED an extra game/week to the season and continued to push the Super Bowl back into February.

Meanwhile the NFL hasn't moved the start to the league year back to compensate for the extension of the season so the 'offseason' continues to get truncated to the point where in the future the Super Bowl will end, the draft will occur and then training camp will open with only several weeks in between.

The league and teams have made up for the extension of all of these activities by making offseason work non-contact and shortening workout periods during camp - and we see the quality of play that first month of the season take a nose dive in the past 10 years.

Those September games are little better than preseason games for most teams.

The last thing I want is to see a team like Washington get even further behind in transitioning to the offseason.

The teams in the playoffs lose coordinators, sometimes coaches retire, etc. Using last year as an example, Bienemy is hired from the Chiefs after the Super Bowl and they have to find a new coordinator at that time. I think the current systems gives teams not in the playoffs the advantage over the playoff teams in this regard. Maybe that’s what the NFL wants. And since they can interview coordinators from playoff teams, it also has them butting in on the playoffs. I just don’t see what disadvantage there is to having all interviews happen after the Super Bowl.

As to the start of the season, yes they should push that back. Free Agency moves quickly and having it start on 4/1, won’t have much of an impact. Most guys sign in the first few days. I know there are more dates before and after that, but they can all be adjusted without major impact.
 
Raheem Morris is not a name many of us have spent much time talking about, but this piece really caught my eye because this very positive review of Raheem jives with the two biggest qualities Peters said he is looking for in a coach - a) high quality human being, b) high football IQ. Makes you wonder if a seasoned guy like him will be given more consideration than we think he will...

 
Yeah, Paul. It feels like Morris is moving up on the lists for sure. Players seem to really love and respect him.

Sure - some teams are looking for new HC blood - and a lot aren't. It's not the same for every team because teams who do have to replace some or all of their coaching staff have a ton of work to do in a short period of time vs. stable teams who can immediately start working on free agency and the draft the moment the playoffs are over. It's a huge disadvantage to teams that are either starting over or trying to replace coaches. And the last thing the NFL needs is to give even more advantages to the powerhouses who seem to get a lot of breaks when it comes to scheduling, free agency, and in every other possible way. One reason why there is relative parity in the NFL compared to other pro sports leagues is because they do seem to try to level the playing field by avoiding things like draft lotteries.

If the owners of playoff teams felt some interviews occurring during the playoff period was a significant negative factor, they wouldn't vote for it.
 
I don't know... maybe Morris is just a victim of circumstances but he's got a pretty mixed bag in previous head coaching opportunities. He got a lot of praise for the 'turnaround' in TB in 2010, but then the next season they were awful. Obviously, a lot goes into failure, not just the quality of the head coach. He seems like the kind of guy who would interview incredibly well, who has a dynamic personality, and who people like. And of course being a minority candidate is going to get a lot of support. I'm not convinced he's about to be a breakout head coach though.

Hard pass for me on Morris. Watched too many Tampa games to want him as the HC. DC... maybe, but I doubt he'd go for it.
 
Wow Pete - good pull. That sounds like the cautionary tale of the perils of being a 'player's coach'. I honestly don't get how Morris would be a good choice? If you want to give someone a 2nd or 3rd chance at HC, for God's sake, Harbaugh or even Vrabel should be the guy.

I can't imagine someone arguing that Raheem Morris is the best HC candidate available, and I'll be very disappointed and skeptical if that is where we land.

I've put both Quinn and Morris on the list of the guys I just don't want. I want someone else to give them a second chance. I'd rather have this shoot their shot with one of the coordinators who hasn't been a head coach yet.
 
But we aren’t interviewing for a DC - right?
 
Right. We are interviewing mostly coordinators for HC based on their body of work and potential. 🤷🏻‍♂️
 
I get it. That’s all we presumably have to go on. That’s part of the challenge :)
