Your Head Coach preference?

I read that same article yesterday and came away more confused than when I started.

I sort of assume that if a team can interview for head coaching vacancies, there probably isn't any prohibition on announcing an agreement. But who knows if an official contract can be executed? You'd think this would be something media folks would be able to determine and educate us on?

Unless I missed it somewhere, anybody notice how we don't even see a tweet about "Washington has concluded their interview with Coach X" ?

So far, seems to be a tight ship.

Part of this seems driven by the rules, but it seems to me we were more driven to land our GM than our HC. A number of teams have gotten interviews before us. For example, we weren’t the first team to interview Johnson and we weren’t even in the first group to interview Slowick.

This may be a good sign. We definitely want our man, but the fact that the team builder was by far the higher priority is something I can get behind.

I think what will drive everything is that we are likely the most attractive situation for head coaching candidates in this cycle and it's not close. I believe it's likely that whomever is Harris/Peters top choice is gonig to be hired. It's hard to foresee our top candidate accepting a job elsewhere? If New England were in the mix, that could change things. But after us, Seattle is probably the 2nd most attractive landing spot. But they can't offer what we can in terms of potential assets and also a brand new ownership group that's willing to commit whatever it takes to turn the ship around.

I don't think that's 'wishful thinking', I think it's been generally acknowledged that the top jobs in DC are the most coveted this cycle.

I guess the one counter-argument would be that if one of these candidates is a top preference, and we are the most desireable destination, why are our reported top candidates continuing to interview with multiple teams?

Seems crazy to me that coordinators can interview the day before their team’s playoff game. If it were my team I definitely wouldn’t like it.

I think you're right, but it might also be overstated. We have the most future assets in terms of cap space, draft picks, etc, but the foundation is still rotten. We need to turn over 3/4s of the roster. The Snyder facilities are still in major need of an upgrade. We are a fixer upper with amazing bones and rumors of gold hiding somewhere on the property just waiting to be mined.

So, any coach considering us needs to think about their timeframe. Anyone interested in h probably sees Washington as a Herculean task. Anyone who wants to hit the ground running and be an immediate contender may shy away from us. Anyone who wants to build a winner in their image ought to be pretty excited.

Almost reminds you of college bowl games where coaches and players opt out because they are draft ready or they've traded up to a bigger college except in this case I don't think the coordinator is allowed to sign a contract and outright abandon his team in the playoffs.

Keim only puts Washington in his top 3. The Chargers job seems to be widely considered #1 by the media folk due to their roster. But, that has to be weighed against their ownership. Atlanta also seems highly attractive due to the overall roster and their ownership which must be weighed against their QB position.

Almost reminds you of college bowl games where coaches and players opt out because they are draft ready or they've traded up to a bigger college except in this case I don't think the coordinator is allowed to sign a contract and outright abandon his team in the playoffs.

Even if they cannot accept a job at this moment, I would not be happy if one of my coordinators was taking part in 3 interviews the day before a playoff game.

Maybe. But teams in need of a new head coach aren't generally chockfull of talent and promise. I'm not sure there's a dramatic difference between the state of our roster and the other teams vying for the same candidates. Then again, I haven't done a side by side comparison either, so that could be a bigger factor than I'm suggesting. I would think who a team has at QB could play a role (although I would think owning the #2 pick in the draft might negate that kind of advantage). What $$ is being offered could also make a big difference.

Impulsivity (and worse) of an owner is a huge factor. Who the hell is going to want to pin their hopes on becoming the HC for a Dave Tepper-owned franchise? And some of these teams also fired the GM (the Panthers fired theirs yesterday) - so you may be making an offer to a candidate and not be able to tell him who he'll be reporting to. Some of these teams are a mess.

I think that Tepper is in a league of his own (now that Snyder has left the premises). Someone is going to take his money though. I would be surprised though if it’s one of the highly-touted names.

On the Chargers job ... biggest in the plus column is the quarterback clearly, and the overall roster seems to be pretty good according to most media stuff you see. One negative that never gets talked about though is that the franchise has absolutely zero homefield advantage or even dormant fan base.

Seriously, they still are the SAN DIEGO Chargers for gods sake (I actually typed that when I started this post and had to once again smfh and change it) and I think eventually will end up recognizing that and moving back to SD with tails between their legs. They play in the Rams shiny new stadium, and when they do the stands look like Washington homes games late in lost seasons--essentially road games. I don't even think if they ever actually WIN anything it'll translate into a long-term Los Angeles thing. As long as the Rams are there, the Chargers will always be the child who for some mysterious reason doesn't look even remotely like the Dad.

I don’t really think that the Rams mean all that much to LA. Visiting team fans seem to be their bread and butter. I’m sure glad that is not true in my ’pantry’. 😑

The other factor with the Chargers is the roster is older and cap space issues mean that a number of their name players including their WRs and front seven on defense may have to be released in the offseason.

Staley really wasted the past 2-3 years with the Chargers and those free agent signings made to bolster Justin Herbert are now blowing up.

I don't trust their front office.

The got lucky with Herbert.

If I were Harbaugh I would take the job but bring in my own personnel guys.

I wonder if Spanos who at times acts like Bidwill or Irsay will stay out of it long enough for ANY coach to be successful.

The funniest slam I heard of the cowboys this week, was that Dan Quinn should have opted out of coaching that wildcard game just like the college kids opt out of bowl games. I was laughing so hard, I almost ran off the road.
