I think we can safely bet that change is in the air. We've lost to some of the worst teams in the NFL and barely squeaked out a win against other bottom dwellers. The defense after four years looks clueless. The offense is one-dimensional though we're pretty excited about that dimension. The depth and starters in several units are below par and the player development has been lacking.
So, who do you have your eye on? What characteristics, traits, or lineage do you hope for? Do you want a gray beard, an up and comer, a mix? Do you want to only consider GM prospects and ignore coaching in hopes that the new front office comes with a plan?
I think I would like to get someone from a perenially good team. Even moreso, if that team doesn't have a HOF QB to cover up all its ills. Given that, if there's a lieutenant ready to take the next step I'd love to grab a GM from the San Francisco tree. Likewise, I might poke around the Eagles and maybe the Dolphins. Those seem to be the deepest teams and the ones that have built their team really well. So, I'd want to look at someone who has learned that philosophy and might practice that style of aquisition.
I don't have a strong feeling about who should be head coach, but would like to go young there, too. I think hunger is the name of the game. There's more risk choosing someone who's never done it before, but I prefer a high ceiling over a high floor. I might tilt towards someone familiar with West Coast concepts just because Howell has seems to be playing well in such a system.
I'm not opposed to considering Bienemy, but he'd need a really good explanation as to why he never even tries to run the ball. He'd also need a good answer why it took him nearly half the season to address the line and use his bench. I have thought the offense in general has outperformed expectations so Bienemy has a shot, but he'd need a really good throw of the dice to actually become the guy given everything else. The one thing he may have going for him is that he's only been here one year so you can't lay the stink of the last four on his doorstep.
