What Would You Like For The New Name Of This Team?

I remember right after Dan bought the team, he trademarked “Washington Warriors” for a proposed AFL team…. Would have been the best option and we could have kept to logo and colors with minimal change. Wonder WTF happened with that?

He let the trademark expire

You will find some people who think any name is ‘crappy’. There seem be a lot of people who think Redwolves should be the name. I think thats crappy.

It’s just a name. A label. It’s not unimportant but it’s just a name. Whatever the name if we win and build a tradition around that name over time it will become something we feel ownership of.

Whatever the name a much better job needs to be done developing the logo/visual identity and merchandise around the name. What’s been done so far is pretty average at best.
Well yeah. It’s not just the name, all of it is second rate. Logo, branding, uniforms…you name it. Of course it all sucks—everything Snyder ever touches is that way. But all that other stuff can be changed/updated over time. Once we settle on a name it should be permanent if we expect to build a tradition around it as you say. It can be built around any name, I agree. So the choice is let the fans pick or settle for Snyder’s second rate garbage. The choice is easy for me—why settle??

The squatter just wants money, but Snyder was too cheap for that. Just like he was too cheap to renew the trademark in the first place. If the new owners want to use Warriors or one of the other names on the list, they just need to pay him off. If the guy’s demands are ridiculous, that’s different but I doubt Snyder even asked. For now, the guy is out 20 Gs so I think he would be reasonable. If not, I’d hate to be him when the wrath of the fanbase comes down on him!!

I noticed the name “Nationals” and states cross brand with the baseball team….dont know how many ppl remember but the St. Louis Cardinals before moving to Arizona shared the same stadium and same name as the baseball team…. How ironic would that be? Still fancy Burgundy and Gold or go back to Football Team

True. Just as we were once the Boston Braves sharing a stadium with ... the Boston Braves baseball team. Then we moved to Fenway and changed to Redskins to pair up with the Red Sox.

Maybe Boston would help their prodigal sons and let us become the Washington Red Sox. ;)

Something Jason Wright was sorely lacking in, and seemed to have little to no interest in.
Early on I remember the team releasing a video showing them re-painting Redskins Park complete with this happy little ditty soundtrack. I distinctly remember a shot of white paint going over and completely erasing the Redskins logo on one of the walls while a happy little tune played in the background. I was apoplectic. It seemed so disrespectful and tone deaf. I fired off a tweet if I remember correctly toward the team. That video was the moment I knew the rebrand would be a disaster.

The other way to go would be for us to become the Washington Bills. After all, Washington Bills are decidedly cool while WIld Bill Hickock was decidedly uncool.

I'm getting a little frustrated. It's really hard to find a name which doesn't have TM issues. Like almost impossible.

And there is something called "trademark squatters." These are individuals who buy trademarks for no other reason but to hold in anticipation of an entity who wants that particular name and must be "paid off" to use the name. It appears to be a get-rich-quick scheme and apparently completely legal. The majority of names on our list have TM issues. Several names on our list have problems due to TM squatters. Redwolves is one. Redhogs is another. Redhawgs seems to be one of the few which is open and available - in my un-expert opinion.

I bet mine is, too, though I don't want to search it because it's entirely possible that if I did that it would send an alert to one of these squatters as to a property they should buy.

OTOH, I'm not entirely opposed to buying it myself and trading it back to Harris for lifetime free season tickets mwhahahahahaha!

Being serious, I remember this being a problem the last time. And several people being really greedy about what they wanted in exchange for the name.

I already checked and werewolves is taken :)

A lot of these are owned by Chinese companies. I guess it's true - the Chinese are buying America

Booooooooo!!!!

Totally not surprised. It'd be relatively unique in sports, but it's hardly a unique name.

The work around I guess could be by attaching a city to it. For example, even if Redwolves is taken DC Redwolves may be clear. Of course, this leaves the avenue wide open for pirated gear, but that's always been the case anyway.

People don’t like to hear this but the trademark issues are a real problem that must be worked around on any name the fans really like. All the most popular names are trademarked and you either have to secure the trademark or work out a mutual use agreement.

Yes - you'll notice that Commanders is owned by Pro-Football, Inc, and also Washington Commanders owned by same.

It appears to be a question of - how badly does one want the name, and how much is one willing to pay? It's not simply choosing a name.

And this suddenly explains exactly why Snyder chose Commanders. The name sucks. So it was cheap. Maybe relatively free.

" Commanders " was originally applied for out of the country in Trinidad & Tobago, where they don't publish its applications, so as to keep it hidden, and then that date is recognized by the USPTO.

The team could apply for a trademark and we would never know about it until it is subsequently filed with the USPTO.
