What Would You Like For The New Name Of This Team?

I hope the ownership just come out and say ‘Look it’s the Commanders - it’s not changing’ and put all this to rest.

Then do some work on improving the visual identify and merchandise. The name will grow on people if we carry on winning and we will come to own it over time.

I can’t imagine people thought ‘Packers’ was the best idea back in the day. To say nothing of the Browns …

I agree with your premise. The NFL is full of names that basically suck. Packers, 49ers, Bills…Browns. If any of those teams were being branded today not one of those names would be picked.

What people relate to are the traditions and the shared experiences. I do think if the name Commanders remains in a few generations nobody will care especially if they keep winning. Doesn’t mean I don’t want them to change the name, it’s just the reality of human nature.

"Red Wolves" seems to be a unifying name.
- it has the "Red" to tie into the previous name and even fight song, which is important to a significant number of fans.
- Red Wolves are a real thing and actually originally indigenous to the DMV
-Way too many possible bad ass variations of the brand
-It is a unique mascot, so very little conflict/confusion with other major franchises
-Could help rescue a struggling species from going extinct
-Burgold could singlehandedly revive the Red color phase of werewolves and have our mascot actually eat an Eagle and Cowboy at halftime.

49ers at least references the gold miners (hubby & I loved mining shows, they were our "soap operas" :ROFLMAO: ), so I think that name serves its' purpose...
49ers is a great area-specific name harkening back to the California gold rush of 1849. I love team names that have a direct relationship to the area in which the team is located.

So stick with a crappy name, because there are some other teams with crappy names? Well, that would certainly not be my first choice. I can agree nobody may care in a few generations, I know I won’t… Of course that’s because I’ll be buried 6 feet deep with a Redskins logo on my tombstone.

If they are seriously considering keeping Commanders then they should at least promote themselves to the Commodores.

The worst part about Commanders is they pick a 3 syllable name that when shortened either on the front end or the back ends sounds even more stupid than the long name.

For some reason the pick the absolute worst name of the ones publicly floated. Typical Dan Snyder. Luckiest man alive. Lucked into his original fortune and somehow made 5 Billion profit on a storied franchise he absolutely ran into the ground and was kind enough to leave us with a stupid name that some random Coach in the revolving door of Coaches the last 25 years, really liked.

God Bless Joe Jackson Gibbs for turning this franchise into a winner - again.

I noticed the name “Nationals” and states cross brand with the baseball team….dont know how many ppl remember but the St. Louis Cardinals before moving to Arizona shared the same stadium and same name as the baseball team…. How ironic would that be? Still fancy Burgundy and Gold or go back to Football Team

I’m partial to names like Redwolves and Redtails. I hated Commanders at first, but it’s growing on me.

I have two problems with the new brand aside from the name:

1. The fight song is messed up. “Hail to the Redwolves” works better than “Hail to the Commanders,” but the worst sin was changing “Braves on the Warpath” to “Fight for our Commanders.” Please fix this!

2. The white jerseys are hideous and the black uniforms are sacreligious. Burgundy and gold please, no black.

Fix 1 & 2 and the name will bother me less.

I agree. Just leave the fight song alone! Fortunately, I think most of the fans sing it the old way anyway, and they are plentiful and they are loud. So maybe the problem will solve itself.

And I also agree with the uniforms. I don't understand this need to change the uniforms all the time. I like the 70's and 80's style. Is this what the new generation wants??? Maybe so.

Good first post! And welcome to BGO!

Looks like they’d be cool with NA imagery

I mean... Commodores, you could play "Machine Gun" after every score... :ROFLMAO:

You will find some people who think any name is ‘crappy’. There seem be a lot of people who think Redwolves should be the name. I think thats crappy.

It’s just a name. A label. It’s not unimportant but it’s just a name. Whatever the name if we win and build a tradition around that name over time it will become something we feel ownership of.

Whatever the name a much better job needs to be done developing the logo/visual identity and merchandise around the name. What’s been done so far is pretty average at best.

Yeah, the whole rebranding seemed just plain lazy to me, from the name to the jerseys and imagery, and to the rollout. Everything. Part of that was the condensed time to do it all, but most of it was a function of the two people primarily leading the process. Keim has been pretty clear that there were people in the building with institutional memory and a very good understanding of our history, heritage and identity. One of those guys was Hurney, but he was sidelined and ignored completely by the former team president, JW.

I trust that better leadership will yield far better results.

I would be hard pressed to not believe that instead of having individuals with a strong understanding of, and appreciation for, the history of the franchise that the ‘powers to be at the moment’ didn’t simply tell Nike to come up with something.
