WFT Time Machine - One Game, One Player

I don't think you can fairly evaluate Turner until you have a quarterback that is mentally and physically able to execute his gameplans.

Haskins had the arm but not the mental preparation to succeed at this level. He missed open receivers for long gainers or TDs each week he started that a veteran quarterback would have hit.

Alex Smith may be one of the smartest players in the NFL but at age 37 he is limited now in mobility and in down the field arm strength.

A staple of Turner's offense is that 20 yard deep out to the WR and Scott hasn't had one quarterback so far that can execute that play consistently.

I can judge his ability to read a game and call plays against what is happening. Two games ago (or was it three?) our ground game was killing it and he abandoned it for the pass when didn't have a QB. I'm not seeing a lot of common sense there, BD, but then I don't see it with any OC in the league right now. No one seems to call games like Gibbs did and I guess I'm just spoiled.

That was last week.

Gibson had 31 yards on 6 carries to start the game with Dwayne at QB. He finished with 61 yards on 10 carries.

No, I'm thinking of a game without Gibson. McKissic averaged 6+ yards per carry but they didn't stay with him for no reason anyone could explain.

Although your stat from last week lends weight to my point. :)

I worry about us always abandoning the run, but we also abandon the screen and crossing patterns that we do so well at. JD will just disappear from a game and it makes no sense.

Seeing Barber straight up truck a safety and then never carry again blew my mind.

I honestly believe that we use the quick passes as an evolution of the run game. They're not hand offs, but they actually can be used to accomplish things in the 'run game' that handoffs cant... like getting the RB OUTSIDE of the DE with the ball. I agree, we need to use that MORE. We use it at times, but it disappears. Use the quick passes to the backs as a function of the run game. However McKissic and co can be effective, use it. I dont care if we hand the ball of 1 time if the plays are effective. Everyone (not saying you're saying this, just a general statement) is so caught up in balance and "you have to do this XX times a game." Well, no ya dont. You need to do what works and win, beyond that there are not quotas or requirements in football. We asked Haskins to throw the ball 55 times against Seattle which worked against us because we got predictable. The fact that he threw 55 times isn't the problem, it's the fact that we ran a lot of the same looks and circumstances in those 55 plays.

Perhaps the reluctance to pound the ground game and give Gibson 25-30 carries or McKissic a heavy load is the recent injury history of Gibson in his rookie season and the lack of size in McKissic and concern he could be worn down quickly with too much work from scrimmage.

Part of it may very well be that the RBs in Scott's mind are catching 5 yard passes which are extensions of the run game, but Rivera may be trying to be cautious especially in Gibson's case as this is his first season playing as a full-time RB.
